It offers some insight outside of mainstream (it gets one star for that),But the author is either pressed to conceal the real truth or he is just ignorant. If I had to vote? I would vote for the former (the guy is definitely smart).However, the author's analysis (in spite of many charts and such) is severely lacking. His analysis is largely superficial and propaganda driven. Naturally so. Else, where would he get any in-depth knowledge of what's REALLY going on? So, like others, he drowns the reader in an ocean of hear-say (supported by 'convincing' graphs, of course), which he picked up in mainstream media and elsewhere ... mainstream.... It is convenient, after all.Thinking is not convenient, for when one does some thinking, the revelations may be life-shattering, and no one wants to look beyond their comfort zone.
This is an excellent book, and I highly recommend your reading it. The author really has a good grip on the type of man Putin is, and what he seeks. I wonder if Marin Katusa had any fear of retribution for what he wrote in this book.The author is very knowledgeable about energy, mining and their related fields. He gets right to the subject matter, doesn't waste your time with useless views or go on tangents on non-essential topics. He tells you how it is, how he sees it, and how to profit from wise investing in the field.I would buy this book again (if I needed to).
This is a very valuable book in the sense that it looks at Putin and modern Russia not in the good/evil, black/white terms that our media and politicians try to shove down our throats, but in the pragmatic terms of a leader that has concrete aims and motivations that are influenced by his upbringing and his goals for his country not by the Hollywood caricature of a bloodthirsty, mad dictator. With US/Russian relations cooling down, you can expect to see more disinformation and shrill cries from the media outlets and politicians on both sides, this book helps you look beyond that to the true strategies and motivations of both US and Russian leadership.Marin does an excellent job of describing the major players in the global energy trade and how national policy in many countries is influenced by energy. The book is very readable and presents information clearly. My only complaint is that he doesn't cite his sources for specific claims- there is a list of sources in the back of the book but it would be better if they were linked directly to the claims that he's making (some of which are pretty major).
Interesting background about Russia, the energy market, and the petrodollar (and its demise). This book may very well prove to be "prophetic" in nature in regards to the petrodollar, but that is something which should be common knowledge by now to anyone watching and reading news from non mainstream media sources. Overall interesting reading, though I noticed a few minor inaccuracies.
A very good wake up call for the west as to the intentions of Putin on the world stage. What it lacks is the perspective of the leaders in the West to counter Putin. Russia is basically a weak country for many reasons. Putins intentions and what he can actually do are two different things. All of this is about actions outside of Russia. He can't defend them with Russian might alone, so they are ultimately reversible over time.
An excellent review of undercurrents most of us (Americans) are not aware of, those we never hear in the media. Also an interesting portrait of Putin, portrayed as an intelligent, complex and dangerous street fighter. After reading, I have a better understanding of some of the dynamics of American Russian relations, and possibly coming problems. The author is not dry or dull, but engages the reader in a way I haven't found in many nonfiction political writings. A definite keeper in my library.
Too oil-oriented. Many other issues will determine Putin's ultimate success or failure. The recent -probably prolonged- weakness of the oil price shows the weakness of the book's argument. The author confuses ruthless opportunism with grand strategy.
A disturbing opinion piece about where the good old USA may be heading. The book paints our country as fatally naive, which I'm not so sure about. I bet there's another angle. Nonetheless I thought the book was very interesting. Well written!
