rarely have I read a book as thought provoking as Gillian Tett, The Silo Effect: The Peril of Expertise and the Promise of Breaking Down Barriers.“Silo” is a buzzword for those of us who work in peacebuilding or just about any other public policy issue, the political versions of these agricultural structures are a constant and frustrating obstacle for those of us working for deep and lasting social change. Tett’s book is particularly useful for people like me because she deals with silos in three new, refreshing, and creative ways.First, silos are a problem everywhere, not just in government bureaucracy. In fact, Tett draws almost all of her examples from the private sector. Everywhere we look, companies are failing because they cannot or will not share information, ideas, and personnel across administrative lines. Whether you are worried about our failure to anticipate big events like 9/11 or the great recession we are now finally emerging from, rigid bureaucratic structures are an obstacle any organization has to overcome in a world in which rapid change is the only constant.Second, Tett is an anthropologist by training. As a result, it is all but natural for her to cover people like a startup mogul turned police officer or a dyslexic physician who view the world through unusual mental lenses. Although she doesn’t use the term, each of her “heroes” has an uncanny ability to view a previously vexing problem from a new perspective that is more in keeping with the network based world we live in rather than one in which hierarchical, top-down models worked well.Third, the book is filled with implications for readers who aren’t interested in big data, finance, pubic health, or the other examples she raises. Whatever your field, her conclusions about the fact that new ideas typically come from “left field” and are often introduced by outliers or what some public health experts call “positive deviants” applies to us all.In closing, it might seem ironic that a book about sweeping change was written by a journalist at the Financial Times. However, it says something about the nature of our times that calls for sweeping change comes from a journalist at a newspaper known for its support of the status quo (albeit one that was just sold). But it also says something that the FT hired and promoted a writer who is as comfortably talking about courting rituals in rural France in the 1950s as she is about high finance.

The way we classify the world never truly matches the reality of life as lived. This significant insight is too often ignored in our organizations, in our societies and the ways we approach problems. Silos plague our lives, and our inability to step outside of our cultural or organizational boxes, our mandates and rules, blocks innovative thinking and forward progress. In The Silo Effect, Gillian Tett provides us with real world examples of the role of organizational silos in triggering the global financial crisis. The book illustrates new opportunities for people and businesses who are able to think outside silos. The Silo Effect is a well-written reference for those willing to meet the real world changes in real time.

Very interesting stories of how companies created new communication structures to change their businesses, better serve customers, and transform the way they see their operations. The book is a little long-winded and some of the sections could be shorter. But it is filled with great information and really fascinating to read.My experience in business shows that this problem is an epidemic. And it is very difficult to create deep levels of communication and collaboration and still drive performance at a local level. Something we can all work on.

I read this book simultaneously with two other books, Team of Teams and Beyond Measures. One lingering message I gathered from this book and the other two is that this century is no way similar to the dogma and modes shaped the last century. The siliver linging is that survival and success would require new skills and techniques, often unprecedented. This gives the new generation opportunities to break through the social stratum. Equality for all mankind can be achieved as long as one strives to listen, observe and adapt as our ancestors had done.

This book is a good read and an excellent way to present the problem of silos and techniques to overcome them. There are so many nuggets in this book that it would benefit from a good index to problems and solution techniques. The theory section at the end could cite references, although the insights seem to gleaned from experience and not research. That is part of the strength of the book. It makes sense.

Interesting book illuminating some recent business stories. I think the author was gathering some of her previous articles and unifying them under a catchy title. The thesis around silos is weak and is better illustrated by The Fiefdom Syndrome: The Turf Battles That Undermine Careers and Companies - And How to Overcome Them. However, the stories are well told and very relevant to today's business. Since reading this I have often used the story of NYC fire prevention when talking about Big Data.

It is an interesting approach and combination of cultural anthropology (for decades now not a study of remote peoples in space and time) and the effects of the type of education that concentrated on profits, over-specialization and losing the big picture to details. It is well written and intended for general public.I heard about the book on CNN, F. Z. Sunday program (excellent source of information AND commentary that has meaning).

The largely unconscious view that things "are the way they are" just ain't true. Sometimes things change by themselves, by growth or age, by leadership or provocation, and sometime just because you see them, use them or encounter them in different ways. The first and last chapters are best - then dive into cases you think you can use. Some of her examples are brilliant, some seem less so - but probably because her models are so diverse that they can seem irrelevant or obscure to solving what I need to solve first.

Review

From the reviews:TECHNOMETRICS"…extensive, well organized, and well documented…The book is an elegant R companion, suitable for the statistically initiated who want to program their own analyses. For experienced statisticians and data analysts, the book provides a good overview of the basic statistical analysis capabilities of R and presumably prepares readers for later migration to S…The format of this compact book is attractive…The book makes excellent use of fonts and intersperses graphics near the codes that produced them. Output from each procedure is dissected line by line to link R code with the computed result…I can recommend [this book] to its target audience. The author provides an excellent overview of R. I found the wealth of clear examples educational and a practical way to preview both R and S.""The scope of the book, introductory statistics, is a very useful set of methods in parametric and non-parametric statistics up to logistic regression and survival analysis. … Where many constructs in R are very attractive for mathematical oriented users, e.g. matrices, Dalgaard succeeded in convincing me that with little extra effort they can be made very useful to less mathematically oriented people, e.g. by specifying row and column names, and proposing quite attractive ways to specify for example ‘subsets’ of rows and columns." (Dr. H. W. M. Hendriks, Kwantitatieve Methoden, Vol. 72B8, 2003)"R is an Open Source implementation of the well-known S language. It works on multiple computing platforms and can be freely downloaded. R is thus ideally suited for teaching at many levels as well as for practical data analysis and methodological development. This book provides an elementary-level introduction to R, targeting both non-statistician scientists in various fields and students of statistics. … Brief sections introduce the statistical methods before they are used. A supplementary R package can be downloaded and contains the data sets." (Zentralblatt für Didaktik der Mathematik, August, 2004)"This is a nice book on statistical methods and statistical computing in R, a language and environment for statistical computing and graphs: this dialect of the S language is available as free software through internet. … Explanation of statistical methods, together with an interpretation of statistical concepts, is the prevailing style of the text. They are illustrated by plenty of practical examples, all computed using R. This book will be useful for novices in applied statistics or in computing in R." (European Mathematical Society Newsletter, September, 2003)"The book is an elegant R companion, suitable for the statistically initiated who want to program their own analyses. For experienced statisticians and data analysts, the book provides a good overview of the basic statistical analysis capabilities of R … prepares readers for later migration to S. … I can recommend Introductory Statistics With R to its target audience. The author provides an excellent overview of R. I found the wealth of clear examples educational and a practical way to preview both R and S." (Thomas D. Sandry, Technometrics, Vol. 45 (3), 2003)"R is both a statistical computer environment and a programming language designed to perform statistical analysis and to produce adequate corresponding graphics. … The present book is … a very useful guide for introducing a number of basic concepts and techniques necessary to practical statistics, covering both elementary statistics and actual programming in the R language. The book is organized in 12 chapters and three appendices, each chapter ending with a beneficial section of proposed exercises." (Silvia Curteanu, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1006, 2003)From the reviews of the second edition:“This review … roughly cover the introductory topics of a first year statistics course. The Introductory Statistics with R (ISwR) book is targeted for a biometric/medical audience. It covers more topics … like multiple regression and survival analysis and expects the reader to know about basic statistics. … include examples and graphs together with the R code to construct them. … The ISwR book is good for an academic and biometric audience.” (Wolfgang Polasek, Statistical Papers, Vol. 52, 2011)“This is a welcome addition to the new edition that will be appreciated by its users. … The new edition is well written, and the new materials are well incorporated. Like the first edition, this edition will continue to be useful to the target audience, and I can safely recommend it to them.” (Technometrics, Vol. 51 (2), May, 2009)

From the Back Cover

R is an Open Source implementation of the S language. It works on multiple computing platforms and can be freely downloaded. R is now in widespread use for teaching at many levels as well as for practical data analysis and methodological development. This book provides an elementary-level introduction to R, targeting both non-statistician scientists in various fields and students of statistics. The main mode of presentation is via code examples with liberal commenting of the code and the output, from the computational as well as the statistical viewpoint. A supplementary R package can be downloaded and contains the data sets. The statistical methodology includes statistical standard distributions, one- and two-sample tests with continuous data, regression analysis, one- and two-way analysis of variance, regression analysis, analysis of tabular data, and sample size calculations. In addition, the last six chapters contain introductions to multiple linear regression analysis, linear models in general, logistic regression, survival analysis, Poisson regression, and nonlinear regression. In the second edition, the text and code have been updated to R version 2.6.2. The last two methodological chapters are new, as is a chapter on advanced data handling. The introductory chapter has been extended and reorganized as two chapters. Exercises have been revised and answers are now provided in an Appendix. Peter Dalgaard is associate professor at the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Copenhagen and has extensive experience in teaching within the PhD curriculum at the Faculty of Health Sciences. He has been a member of the R Core Team since 1997.

R is a useful freeware that can represent a hurdle to students and/or professionals who do not have formal training in computer programming. This book helps to clear those hurdles, and introduces a solid foundation from which statistics users can build new tools for their specific analyses. The rest of this review is broken up for experienced and new users.****If you do not have a solid foundation in statistics, this book is not going to help you bridge that gap. Although the title is "Introductory Statistics with R" the author is clear that this is a book to learn how to program intro stats with R, and is not designed to teach any statistics tools. The author assumes you understand statistics and does not clarify statistics terms like p-value, test statistic, degrees of freedom, ANOVA, and the like. ****New to R:Although it may sound like a conundrum, the only way to learn a program is to program. Thankfully learning R can be easy, since the program is free, installs well on nearly all machines, and has detailed help files in various languages around the world. This is an excellent book for the R beginner, but I must stress the importance of ACTUALLY PROGRAMMING while you read this book. You CAN NOT read this book cover to cover and expect to learn R, programming doesn't work that way. This book can be a great resource for people who are brand new to R, but it requires hands on utilization of the source codes provided. Thankfully, this step is made that much easier for new users with a detailed explanation of how to obtain the ISWR package used with this text. Like everything in R, packages are free, and contain suites of functions and sometimes data. All the code in this book utilizes data from the ISWR package, so it will be easy to implement the code yourself and get the same results as the author.Familiar with R:Someone familiar with the notation in R can read this book cover to cover and find it enlightening. I had been programming in R for coursework in undergraduate statistics for four years before I found this text. It has a lot of useful data management code that people who taught themselves or learned for classes not dedicated to teaching the program will probably find useful. I found a lot of time-saving code that I wish I had known years ago!

I bought this book a little over a year ago when a friend and colleague insisted I learn the R system for our collaborative work. I am not a professional statistician, but an engineer and researcher who needs and uses statistics in the course of my professional work.I found this book approachable and informative from the non-professional perspective. (That is, from the viewpoint of a non-statistician.) I found enough examples to guide me through the process of bringing my datasets into the R environment, and then enough guidance to get me through the initial analyses necessary to make meaningful use of the statistical computations contained within the R system. There are many other texts that treat the kinds of advanced statistics capability in the R system. Those are also necessary references for the non-statistician. There are also other texts on using the graphics subsystem present in R (which is substantial). Those references are also useful for preparation of reports and other written material. But, this text is most useful as a primer for the system and is a first source on my shelf when I need to know the "how-to" of the basics. Then, if my needs are more substantial than those addressed by Dalgaard, I'll turn to other references.

I purchased this book after wading through the R help files for what seemed like hours. I was looking for a simple and straightforward guide that I could refer to for the basic operations of R. I am currently teaching myself C++ and learning how to interact with the Unix environment, but have very little experience with statistical programming. Therefore, I was looking for an accessible reference to help me become more comfortable with the R environment. *Introductory Statistics with R* provides concise answers to the "new user" questions that inevitably arise when programming in a new environment. In addition to its role as a programming resource, Dalgaard provides very useful information about the statistical methods he describes. I find this feature very useful as well, as I can rarely recall all the details of various statistical procedures from memory. My only caution is that this is an *introductory* guide to R. You will not find instructions for most (if any) of the additional libraries available to R. That said, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how to use R for statistical analyses.

Despite the web, there are learning curves sufficiently steep that a well-organized book is the most effective introduction. However, too many of these introductions, particularly in programming and/or statistics are written with low content and high redundancy or with impenetrably high-density content. So, it is a rare sign of pedagogical mastery combined with the genuine confidence of the experienced practioner when an introductory book manages to achieve a balance that is just right. As I become more familiar with R, I still carry around this book in my briefcase for the occasional reread during which I uncover a nugget I had missed. When I have told this to my colleagues in computer science or bioinformatics, they immediately reveal that they share my enthusiasm for Dalgaard's work.Let's be clear: this is a book that walks you through introductory and highly useful statistics while introducing you to the most effective ways to use R to perform these biostatistical analyses. It is not a programming book, nor is that its intent.

I love the humor. This is not your usual travel guide. This edition is 2008, thus getting a bit long in the tooth, but the wit and history make up for the years. It is an easy read with lots of tips about this naughty place in Jamaica. Chris, please write an update!

Really well written and to the point as to what to expect(which is exactly what I wanted). Amazon always does a great job of delivering things I purchase on time. Very well packaged. I wish the quality of the photographs was higher in the book, but it conveys what to expect well enough.

Fun reading, especially after having stayed at the resort a few times.

This was a pretty interesting read and I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. You owe it to yourself to read through the book at least once before planning your trip to Hedonism II.

I bought this as a gift for my son and returned it without giving it. I was looking for something a little more hands-on / outdoor adventure / how-to type material for camping and such and this seemed to me to be mostly big glossy pictures with factoids about situations in a jungle, the arctic or similar extreme environments. The pictures are nice and I'm sure many could find it interesting in a National Geographic kind of way, but it's not at all a guide you'd throw in your pack for general (typical US forest) outdoor adventure.

I bought this book for my kids - 8, 10 & 15. It contains some very important and practical information. More importantly though, it is well written and interesting. We have spent a lot of time with this book since buying it. I like that you can skip around and only read the sections that you are interested in.As an adult, I too greatly enjoy this book!

It's a fun book to read a couple pages of every day with my 3 & 4 year old boys.

My 11 year old took one look inside and promptly tossed it aside. Not interesting at all for him, or for me. Where’s that old classic from the 1970’s “How to Survive in the Woods”?

Bought for my son who is a total outdoors kid. he loves it

This is great if you are looking to interest an outdoorsy kid! Has some great information in it with very vivid and descriptive pictures. Even shows you how to put together your pack effectively. Information is broken up into sections and looks less overwhelming than an adult field guide etc. Catches the attention of those not so into reading. Book and pages are thick and sturdy as well. Great product overall.

My boys enjoyed it.
