I used this book alone to build a beautiful boat. The product recommendations and detailed instructions make building a boat a whole lot easier on the nerves. If you are itching to build your own boat, pick up this book and read it cover to cover. Then get started by reading as you approach each step. It paid off for me.
I was impressed with this book the moment I opened the package. I literally read 3/4 of the book the day it arrived. The pictures are B&W and show good detail, although I wish some were color. The amount of info contained in the book is ALMOST overwhelming. I'm sure to refer back to the book as I build my first canoe. My son has been by three times in the last two weeks; he's picked up this book every time he's stopped. I believe with this book and one other I purchased, they will answer 99% of any questions I might come up with before finishing my boat. It's already helped with several thoughts important before choosing a canoe or starting the project. I'm a firm believer in the phrase " Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.". This book has already helped me get my thoughts together and plan the design and process I want to use. I'm sure it will be invaluable during the actual construction.
I bought my boyfriend a buttload of things for Father's day (I've been saving for a long time because I'm ill and make art for money but that's besides the point), this book and the Nick Offerman DVD from 2008 has yet to arrive he was the one to suggest this book so kudos I guess for this Authour Ted Moores. I hope he accomplishes his goal of building his very own Canoe. I'm worried cause we don't own land or a home but I'm supporting him through this journey he wants to take on. :) If he builds one I'll try to take a picture.
Two complaints. First is with the pictures that marketing would have us think makes this book extra special. Opposed to black and white images, my copy is filled with black and dark grey images. Between the dark prints and small framing, I simply can't make out the details they are meant to depict. I'm 35 with good eyes. With little woodworking experience I find myself googling more than I think I would otherwise need to if only I could make out the images.Also, mid sentence interruptions 4 pages in length are inserted for builders tips. These are major hiccups in the flow of reading. I'm sure this is the publishers doing to save a dollar every 100 or so copies. It won't hinder building a boat but does add frustration.
Could not be happier. This book is a must have for any woodworker's library. Very pleased with the testimonial section added to this addition, great read. Instruction, photos, and diagrams are all top notch. Enjoyable to longtime enthusiasts or those looking to jumpstart their learning and crafting.
Of the three strip building books this revised version is my favorite. I will probably use techniques from all three books I own, but with this one I particularly enjoy people's success stories included in the book. It's inspiring and only adds to my excitement about the upcoming project.
