Review

"Denny Cherry is what would happen if Bill Gates and AC/DC got together to create a sibling. He’s a bare-knuckles, no holds-barred technologist, and you can bet that if he tells you that something does or doesn’t work, he’s speaking from experience. Active in the community, his passion is sharing. You’ll enjoy this book." -Buck Woody, Senior Technology Specialist, Microsoft "Securing SQL Server is a must read for any architect or database administrator wanting to secure their SQL Servers. Given the sensitive data that SQL Servers could hold, it is vital that one understands the potential attacks and how to protect yourself from them. This is the book to help you understand." -InfoSecReviews Book Awards

Denny's a jack of all trades, and a Microsoft Certified Master of SQL Server to boot. I've had the pleasure of knowing Denny for a few years, and he's on the short list of people who I'd trust with my server password list. (I wouldn't trust him with my laptop password, though, because he's got a wicked sense of humor.) When Denny first told me he was writing a security book by himself, I asked him why - it seemed like such a dry topic. Amazingly, Denny was able to bring this material to life in a friendly, readable way. It's easy to recommend this book for companies that store financial, medical, or personally identifiable data in their databases, but going beyond that, I think every company with a multi-DBA team should have a copy of this book on their bookshelf. A lot of my clients ask questions that are answered well in this book, and this book is way cheaper than a HIPAA/PCI/SOX audit.

BRILLIANT WORK! Denny Cherry has really done his homework and summarized it for you in this awesome book. I have never met this guy but would love to someday. In my opinion he is a true master of this topic. Before this book I had a pretty good knowledge of SQL security and industry standard security features that integrate with SQL server. This book as taught me so much about the whole picture of how all that works. This is just perfect for intermediate to advanced SQL admins. Great timing too as the schools I work at needed a new book for their SQL security classes. This is now our book for the SQL security lessons that will be given to all students. You get a really good feel for the "What" and "Why" of security as well as the history along with where the industry is headed. It's not a beginner book but great for people in the admin side of SQL wanting to be that "Go-To" SQL security person. Wish I could give it 6 stars.

Being a relatively new DBA, this book has proved invaluable and shines light on so many security topics that we may or may not even be aware of. Everything from basic network and infrastructure security to backup encryption and file system permissions. This book is a must have for any DBA, regardless of skill level or experience. I've highlighted and dog eared quite a few pages on this book! The only issue I have, as well as others who have reviewed this book, is the editing/proofreading. There are many grammar and capitalization errors. The publisher/editor(s) should have taken a much better look over it. I got the 1st edition, so I'm not sure if they have been fixed in the 2nd edition. Thanks for a great book that will definitely be readily available on my shelf!

I'm really enjoying the content and format of this book. The way the chapters are presented in an encapsulated format so they can be read in any order saves time and the language is easy to read while still being technical in nature. My only complaint with the book so far (I purchased the Kindle version so I'm not sure if the print version is any different) is that there are several spelling and grammatical errors which can distract readers who know better (i.e. former English majors). It probably would have benefited from another once-over in the editing department.

Denny has done a fantastic job, not just covering SQL Server security, but covering some of the broader infrastructure security concerns. This book covers a lot of ground and very efficiently. Denny's broad skill base in not just database, but broader issues such as storage and networks shine through. Even if you a developer, he covers several solid techniques to avoid SQL injection attacks.

This book gives you a good look at SQL Server security. It doesn't confine itself to the usual topics but covers security from many perspectives such as encryption, network security, backups, SQL injection, etc. It is profusely illustrated with screen prints and the authors style makes it easy to read. A nice extra was the Appendix containing external audit checklists. Now for my minor annoyance, some of the features described are SQL Server version dependent. For example, you need the Enterprise edition of SQL Server to use transparent encryption. I did not find a mention of features being version dependent anywhere in the book.
