Amazon.com Review

"The beauty of baseball cards," writes Mike Payne in his brief introduction, "is that you don't have to have played the game to collect the men who do play the game." And the beauty of the 300 particular cards that he's collected here is how much these little pieces of cardboard convey about the evolution of the national pastime and the personalities of the players. From the early cards of Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, and the record-breaking Honus Wagner that sold at auction for $640,000 to the 1999 Mark McGuire series commemorating his 70th home run, every picture tells a story. Dividing his volume into the 10 decades of the century, Payne provides appropriate card and collecting history as he displays significant, though not necessarily the most historical or valuable, cards from each. Every card is accompanied by a ballpark price and short commentary on why that card is particularly interesting. For example, a 1952 Mickey Mantle card pictures a pensive, almost troubled young Mantle, avoiding eye contact, his arms folded protectively over his chest. Payne reminds us that Mick's '51 rookie year was a hard one, and the pressures attending the off-season death of his father and indications he'd be replacing the retired Joe DiMaggio in centerfield were enormous. "So, back in '52, being Mickey Mantle wasn't all it was cracked up to be," Payne tells us. "This '52 Bowman card"--valued at between $1,500 and $2,500--"seems to capture the mood at the time." It's amazing how many other cards--from Aaron to Zernial--follow suit, and how much richer the game is simply for their presence. --Jeff Silverman

excellent

One of the things I like about this book is that the title, for once, is not overstated. "300 Great Baseball Cards of the 20th Century" does not profess to provide the 300 greatest cards and therefore provides exactly what the subtitle indicates, "A Historical Tribute by the Hobby's Most Relied Upon Source." Okay, so there is some promotion here since the book is compiled by Mike Payne and the staff of "Beckett Baseball Card Monthly."Of course you will find the most famous (and expensive) baseball cards of all time, such as the legendary 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner ($112,500-$225,000) and the 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle (not his first card, which would be the 1951 Bowman #253), which are the respective Holy Grails for the first and second half of the century. You will find cards for most of the greatest players in the history of the game, from Ty Cobb (1909-11 T206 Green Background) and Babe Ruth (1933 Goudey #43) to Mark McGwire (1985 Topps #401) and Barry Bonds (1987 Fleer #604). Not surprisingly, it is Mantle, in whose honor Topps has retired card number 7 in their sets, who has the most baseball cards with 21. Ruth and Ted Williams have 13 each, Willie Mays a dozen, and Hank Aaron 10. Of course, within those you will find cards with Mantle and Mays, Mantle and Aaron, and Aaron and Mays. While there are cards of famous players you might recognize, such as the 1914 Cracker Jack #103 with Shoeless Joe Jackson that served as the model for a card in "Field of Dreams," there are some that are included because of their oddities, like the 1954 Topps #139 which has the O'Brien twins, Eddie and Johnny, the 1957 Topps #20 Hank Aaron where the reverse negative has the Hammer batting left-handed, and 1976 Topps #564 Kurt Bevacqua "Bubble Gum Blowing Champ" (I swear that gun Topps had would break your teeth but also preserve your cards in the box). You will find rookie cards, combination cards (e.g., 1957 Tops #407 Power Hitters: Mantle & Berra), all star cards, World Series card, commemorative cards (e.g., 1959 Topps #550 Roy Campanella, "Symbol of Courage"), traded cards, update cards (e.g., 1984 Fleer Update #U43 Dwight Gooden), error cards (e.g., 1985 Donruss $424 Tom Seaver), and variation cards (e.g., 1974 Topps #250B Willie McCovey "Washington Nat'l League").A lot of the cards represent baseball history, talking about what happened with particular players in a given year or what was happening with baseball card companies (e.g., 1955 Bowman #179 Hank Aaron talks about how Topps bought Bowman after its ambitious 1955 TV release). There are also entries from the collector's perspective, such as the 1990 Leaf #220 Sammy Sosa that everyone was pulling out of their commons and semi-star boxes when Sosa was chasing Roger Maris and Mark McGwire during the great home run race of 1998 (ironically, the card shows Sosa bunting). The book, of course, is illustrated with photographs of all 300 cards, along with photos of ballparks and players, mostly from the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library. For the die hard collector or the knowledgeable baseball fan this is a great book to leaf through and walk down memory lane. For the record I have 135 of the 300 cards, although by the end I am pretty much back to where I am in the beginning in terms of seeing cards I have never really seen let along tried to own.

nice book

"Epic . . . Rambunctious . . . Highly entertaining . . . Sorrowful and funny . . . Cheerfully profane . . . The quips and jokes come fast through a poignant novel that is very much about time itself . . . A powerful rendering of a Mexican-American family that is also an American family."―Viet Thanh Nguyen, New York Times Book Review (cover review)"A raucous, moving, and necessary book...Intimate and touching...The stuff of legend...There's deep heart and tenderness in this novel. The House of Broken Angels is, at its most political, a border story...Chillingly accurate, they're heartbreaking, and infuriating."―Alexis Burling, San Francisco Chronicle"An immensely charming and moving tale...Urrea deftly inhabits many points of view, dreaming up an internal voice for each...It is a testament to his swift and lucid characterizations that one does not want to leave this party...A novel like The House of Broken Angels is a radical act. It is a big, epic story about how hard it is to love with all of your heart, and all of your family--regardless of which side of the border they live on."―John Freeman, Boston Globe"The House of Broken Angels is a big, sprawling, messy, sexy, raucous house party of a book, a pan-generational family saga with an enormous, bounding heart, a poetic delivery, and plenty of swagger...More than once while reading the novel, I thought of James Joyce's 'The Dead,' another kaleidoscopic fable of family life that skillfully mixes perspectives...The House of Broken Angels is a book about celebration that is, itself, a celebration."―Michael Lindgren, Washington Post"Urrea's gifts as a storyteller are prodigious...The book's spirit is irrepressibly high. Even in its saddest moments, The House of Broken Angels hums with joy...The novel overflows with the pleasure of family...And all that vulnerability, combined with humor and celebration and Urrea's vivid prose, will crack you open."―Lily Meyer, NPR"The House of Broken Angels is a big, messy, warmhearted epic, over-flowing with color and character...With bird's eye agility, Urrea moves between borders and generations...His narrative is imbued with the timeless texture of every immigrant's hope's and dreams...Generous to the last breath."―Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly"A whirling fiesta of a book...Filled with intelligence and wickedly funny cultural commentary, the story builds to an electrifying finale."―Marion Winik, People"Humane and often laugh-out-loud hilarious."―O, The Oprah Magazine"A sprawling yet intimate tale...rich in detail and images...It's the sort of book you might read, as I did, in one long, breathless push."―Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times"Generous and big-hearted...The House of Broken Angels soars on wings of memory and imagination into the 'imperfect and glorious, messy and hilarious' tragedy and comedy of family history."―Diana Postlethwaite, Minneapolis Star-Tribune

This book is beautiful. It is about family, about how you impart wisdom to the next generation, what it means to embrace America while holding on to your culture and tradition, all with lively humor and love. It is about three generations of a Mexican American family living in Southern California looking at their past, facing death, and still trying to make sense of this crazy mixed up world that is both magnificent and crushing. Many memorable novels have characters who leave a lasting impression. The protagonist Big Angel has an immense presence, yet he is willing to admit his frailties. Perhaps it is because he is looking death in the face. No matter, he is a man with a broad range that once you hear his voice and learn his secrets, you will never forget him. All the while, getting to know his family will be the most fun you have ever had without the drama of your own.Big Angel had me when he was looking for signs of his dearly departed mother or his son.“When he was a boy, Mother had taught him that a rainbow was a bridge where angels walked down from heaven. In Spanish, it was an arco iris. This was so much more lovely than English, like the name of a butterfly or hummingbird or daisy. He felt smug about this: go, Spanish! Sunflower: girasol, he thought.”I am deeply in love with the Spanish language, which I don’t speak. If you love the language, and for many other reasons, you are in for a real treat with THE HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS.

In his vivid multi-generational tale of a Mexican-American family, Luis Alberto Urrea offers up fallen angels (husbands, fathers, sons, brothers) and caregiving saints (wives, mothers, daughters, sisters). At times, I had trouble remembering the identities of third or even second generation characters, a confusion exacerbated by their multiple nicknames. And, even in context, the meaning of some Spanish expressions eluded me. Despite these gaps, I was drawn into the wild ride of life events and complicated relationships among the de la Cruz kin. Some are common to all extended families, others unique to a culture proud of itself yet shamed by a society that regards them as “less than” their white counterparts. Overall, the book has the zest, orneriness, kindness, rage, and spirit of a wild and crowded fiesta.

I really want just to say “Buy this book now and read it tonight”. Almost everything has been said about this wonderful novel, but let me add this: There are passages in which the language is so wonderful, you just want to cut it out of the page and chew it up. Don’t be discouraged by the death of the patriarch. This book will make you want to live bigger than you’re living right now.

This is a very good novel. The events happen now and take place over a few days, mostly in San Diego and Baja California. A huge Mexican- American family has encounters, comic and sad. You may want to look up a few words printed in Spanish, but only a few. There is food, sexual flirtation, insults, comedy, and a touch of modern references. If you have a stereotype of Mexican-Americans in your head, this will change it. There is enough variety to keep a reader pleasantly off-balance. I will read more of this writer.

“The House of Broken Angels” is a book about a family. A BIG family. The head of the family is Miguel Angel De La Cruz, AKA “Big Angel” AKA “Flaco.” He is a sort of Atlas figure, carrying his family’s whole world on his shoulder, but as the novel opens, that world is slipping from his grasp. Big Angel is dying of cancer, and his days—even his hours—are numbered. The novel is a patchwork of stories, wrapped in a collage of characters, tangled up in a web of relationships. There is a plotline that runs through the entire work, but it is almost unnecessary. The author may have included it simply as a respectful nod to the ancient art he has taken up—and that’s fitting: this is a novel very much about respect for what has come before. There are a lot of characters, and at first, I found it intimidating trying to keep up, but eventually, I just relaxed and let their stories wash over me. Clearly, the author is sympathetic to readers who might be a bit overwhelmed by the chaos. He does a good job of reminding you at intervals who these people are, and also reassures the reader that if you get confused at times, it’s okay: Even the characters themselves don’t always know if the guy that just walked in the door is a brother, cousin, uncle, nephew . . . or a complete stranger hoping to sneak in and snag a free cup of instant coffee in all the confusion. The reader, of course (at least this reader), feels like that stranger, at first. It is the art of this novel that by-and-by, the reader begins to feel like family. It’s a marvelous transformation.Hey, Sis, pass the condensed milk and tell me another story about our Abuelo.

Review

From the reviews of the first edition: "Steven Shreve’s comprehensive two-volume Stochastic Calculus for Finance may well be the last word, at least for a while, in the flood of Master’s level books.... a detailed and authoritative reference for "quants” (formerly known as "rocket scientists”). The books are derived from lecture notes that have been available on the Web for years and that have developed a huge cult following among students, instructors, and practitioners. The key ideas presented in these works involve the mathematical theory of securities pricing based upon the ideas of classical finance....the beauty of mathematics is partly in the fact that it is self-contained and allows us to explore the logical implications of our hypotheses. The material of this volume of Shreve’s text is a wonderful display of the use of mathematical probability to derive a large set of results from a small set of assumptions. In summary, this is a well-written text that treats the key classical models of finance through an applied probability approach. It is accessible to a broad audience and has been developed after years of teaching the subject. It should serve as an excellent introduction for anyone studying the mathematics of the classical theory of finance." (SIAM, 2005) "The contents of the book have been used successfully with students whose mathematics background consists of calculus and calculus-based probability. The text gives both precise Statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs. But more importantly, intuitive explanations, developed and refine through classroom experience with this material are provided throughout the book." (Finanz Betrieb, 7:5, 2005) "The origin of this two volume textbook are the well-known lecture notes on Stochastic Calculus … . The first volume contains the binomial asset pricing model. … The second volume covers continuous-time models … . This book continues the series of publications by Steven Shreve of highest quality on the one hand and accessibility on the other end. It is a must for anybody who wants to get into mathematical finance and a pleasure for experts … ." (www.mathfinance.de, 2004) "This is the latter of the two-volume series evolving from the author’s mathematics courses in M.Sc. Computational Finance program at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). The content of this book is organized such as to give the reader precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, mathematical proofs and, more importantly, the intuitive explanations of the financial and economic phenomena. Each chapter concludes with summary of the discussed matter, bibliographic notes, and a set of really useful exercises." (Neculai Curteanu, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1068, 2005)

The content of this book has been used successfully with students whose mathematics background consists of calculus and calculus-based probability. The text gives both precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs, but more importantly intuitive explanations developed and refine through classroom experience with this material are provided. The book includes a self-contained treatment of the probability theory needed for stochastic calculus, including Brownian motion and its properties. Advanced topics include foreign exchange models, forward measures, and jump-diffusion processes. This book is being published in two volumes. This second volume develops stochastic calculus, martingales, risk-neutral pricing, exotic options and term structure models, all in continuous time. Masters level students and researchers in mathematical finance and financial engineering will find this book useful. Steven E. Shreve is Co-Founder of the Carnegie Mellon MS Program in Computational Finance and winner of the Carnegie Mellon Doherty Prize for sustained contributions to education.

Every time I tried any other finance literature, I end up realizing Shreve's book is the only one that tell you all the truth. After analyzing some other alternatives out there, one should wonder whether all this math are necessary or not. Hull's and Wilmott's books give you a good amount of intuition and honest rules in order to avoid the fundamental theory behind stochastic calculus. Kerry Back and Thomas Mikosch, on the other hand, do not fear showing the math, but instead they give much more insight about the pricing theory without proving the most technical results. Finally, Shreve's books will tell you everything you need to know in order to master stochastic calculus. It's clear, very well written and cover every tiny subtle aspect underlying the theory. The only issue is: This is a Math book that frequently remembers it's solving finance problems, but it never forgets it's doing serious math. So, in my opinion, if you have strong knowledge in calculus and a good amount in probability, you should definitely try Shreve's books. Depending on your math background, it will hurt more or less. It hurt me a lot reading this book, but it is like any classical literature. The more you read, more you understand. And if you don't love math, books like Hull's will give you enough for your finance works.

I have a lot of these 'introductory' books, and this one (and its companion Volume I), are by far the best set of introductory books to mathematical finance i have come across. It contains everything you need to get an entry level position as a quant - meaning that you will pass interview tests i if you understand the contents of this book, the portion of the test about stochastic calculus at least - provided you do all the exercises, and also are able to reproduce some of these proofs (eg the barrier option and lookback options analytical formulas in the exotic options chapter). If you want to make absolutely sure to pass the interview tests (again that section of the test focusing on stochastic calculus and derivative pricing), you could also buy Joshi's books, which are slightly more focused on the finance. [as an aside, interview tests are likely to contain more than just derivative pricing and stochastic calculus, you will need other books to cover these aspects]

Although I work in a major global bank at a senior level I don't use stochastic calculus in my job. My maths and physics background goes back to the 1970s when stochastic calculus was not part of undergraduate studies. Indeed, one usually did stochastic theory at postgraduate level. I have memories of reading Halmos for measure theory, Feller for probability theory, Wiener and others. None of this was easy.Suffice it to say that there were a lot of abstract building blocks one had to erect first before one could actually do anything useful.Stochastic calculus is not easy. It is less intuitive than ordinary calculus. The vast majority of textbooks launch into a wall of definitions that seem divorced from the motivation for them. I am always suspicious of authors who do that. It's fine if you are writing for a very specialised audience but I am with Richard Feynman who reckoned that if you can't provide a simple explanation you don't really understand what is going on. In that context read his PhD thesis - it is most readable and understandable. What Shreve has done - and this is a significant achievement in my view - is to present something that is rigorous enough (and we all know that in this and other areas of mathematics one can go on and on with minute points of detail all in the name of rigour) yet grounds the concepts in something that is understandable. The simple pedagogical fact of life with this type of material is that there is a large overhead in getting to a particular point and Shreve had done a very good job in getting readers to a good standard without destroying their will to go on!When one looks at areas of mathematics with much longer pedigrees - and Fourier Theory is an example - there are some extremely good presentations of the theory at both mathematical and physical levels. Elias Stein, for instance, has done some marvellous work in the area. Stochastic calculus is really very young in terms of mainstream appeal. I can recall actuarial subjects I did in the early 1980s that had no stochastic calculus at all in them. All that has changed and I think Shreve's attempts in this area can be improved upon too but this will only happen over time.My colleagues in quant like Shreve's books so I guess that says something too.

Being a lover of mathematics, I found this book very enjoyable to read. Stochastic calculus is pretty much what it says: deriving, integrating, etc. over processes that are stochastic ("random") instead of deterministic. You will be surprised about how many properties of stochastic processes you can nail down as a precise deterministic number.I haven't tried to make money off the ideas in this book, so I can't speak for whether that would work. However, keep in mind that it doesn't really have trading ideas per se but rather lays the foundation for some mathematical models which could be incorporated in such.

There are a number of important lessons to take away from this book.Firstly, it's important to understand that IT is part of the business. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it's IT _and_ the business as though they are separate entities. Mark spends a good amount of time explaining how to avoid this trap and to change the conversation to how we can succeed together as a business.Next, it's important to understand what our peers in other areas of the business really need when they talk to us about milestones and dates for when things will be done. If we aren't careful, we'll make ensure that our decisions are made at the point where we have the most uncertainty and we won't wait until we have minimized uncertainty. Mark also answers this conundrum with good reasoning and some examples of how it can work better.Beyond these, Mark talks about:* understanding growing instead of scope creeping* standards needing to change over time* funding outcomes that we desire instead of just projects* experimentation in our approach to solving a business case* sometimes mistakes do in fact turn out well even though they are still mistakes.* why we measure activitiesIt all falls into a shifted paradigm for me and has given me a much better framework in which to have discussions across senior leadership to drive real transformation across our business. This book was definitely work the time I took to read it.

As a CIO leading the adoption of agile methods and DEVOPS, I found this book to be extremely helpful in informing my thinking about to go about it. Schwartz challenges much of the conventional wisdom as to what the role of a CIO should be and how traditional management approaches must change if an organization is to truly become agile and reap the benefits of technology. Many books for CIOs focus on specific topics such as agile software development or cloud computing without considering how they fit into the broader picture of how to manage IT. Others only focus on management concerns, but treat the role of a CIO as a service-provider instead of a full partner in delivering value. In engaging and entertaining language, Schwartz demonstrates how and why the current approach to managing IT organizations need to change to reap value from their IT investments. He also challenges agile practitioners to understand how they need to work with management. All managers, CIOs or not, deal with extreme uncertainty on a daily basis. The most successful CIOs will be those who best position their organizations to adapt and respond to unexpected events. This is a book that will show you how.

I'm deep into the process of kicking off a DevOps transformation and Mark's book filled in the biggest capabilities gap we reviewed. What is the role of the CIO and IT management in a highly productive Dev(Eng/Sec/TLA)Ops environment. I read the first 2 chapters online while waiting for the physical book to arrive and immediately skipped ahead to the chapters I was most interested in. Over the next few days I'll finish reading cover to cover in order and come back to add more to the review.Take the time to read the excerpt with the introduction, TOC, and first 2 chapters.

A Seat at the Table is Mark’s follow-up to the Art of Business Value. With AoBV, he began posing troubling questions for the Agile community by explaining how we’ve been taking too narrow a view of business value. He also revealed his ulterior motives when he asks as a CIO, “If the team is not allowed to listen to anyone other than the product owner, then what exactly should I be doing to add value to the enterprise?”. That’s Mark: provocative and funny.Maybe Mark makes trouble because he’s has been troubled by his own role as a CIO during the Agile revolution. In “The CIO” chapter of AoBV, he tells a story about being called-out by the CEO for a project which delivered exactly what the business had asked for within budget and on time but was nevertheless, as Mark puts it “a disaster”. His reaction to the CEO at that time was the all-too-common, that’s on the them, not us -- we did our part. Mark’s CEO responded “You’re missing the point. I have trusted you with an investestment in an IT system. Your job is to make sure I get a good return on IT investments. I am not getting a good return.” This was a wake-up call for Mark and he clearly had much more to say on this than he could fit into one chapter of AoBV.In his latest book, A Seat at the Table, Mark gives us a tour-de-force on how to close the gap between the Agile team and the traditional IT department. This time, he makes trouble for everybody. But stick with him. You’ll be glad you did because Mark will make you laugh and make you better. In ASaT, Mark continues to to stir-up trouble for the Agile community. He doubles-down on what he calls Agile’s “fist pounding, this must change” echo chamber. He points-out the hypocrisy of how the Agile team expects management to stay out of the way unless there is an impediment, in which case they expect a bit of command-and-control to remove it. He also makes quite possibly the most provocative criticism ever made of Agile: “I am not sure that the Agile approach fully accounts for how the Agile team can deliver value -- and I think it should.”Now, if you were to read those excerpts out of context (as I’ve presented them here), you might get the idea that Mark is opposed to Agile but nothing could be further from the truth. Wait until you read what he has to say about Waterfall.Comparisons of Agile to Waterfall are easy to come by but Mark does it in a fresh way. In ASaT, he’s actually put his finger on the fatal flaw of Waterfall. He calls it the “contractor-control model”. This shines new light on something that, as Mark puts it, “is so ingrained in us, we don’t even know we’re doing it”. He further explains how traditional IT is still locked-in to that model and how its insistence upon imposing certainty where it isn’t possible is not only self-defeating but actively destructive.Mark saves his most potent venom for Chapter 4 on planning, in which he launches a devastating assault on the plan-driven approach. Using reductio ad absurdum, Mark enumerates what he calls the “articles of faith for the PTW-WTP (i.e. “plan-the-work / work-the-plan”) religion”. It is both hilarious and boldly provocative. How provocative? Quoting this passage to management actually landed me in hot water for a couple of days. That is high-praise in my mind. Thank you Mark, sincerely.A Seat at the Table is not just critical though. As one might expect from a scholar like Mark. It’s researched, constructive and novel. Beginning each chapter with a passage from a philosopher, he sets the stage for moving IT from a service provider to a driver of outcomes; replacing the plan-driven, control paradigm with ‘shaping behavior', a shift from ‘buy’ to ‘build’, a fresh look at Enterprise Architecture (EA) and a concept that I hope Mark is considering as the subject for his next book, impeccability -- although I suspect it’ll be EA.This book is not just for CIO’s. If you are in IT, consider yourself an Agilist, want to understand more about Lean or DevOps, this book must be on your shelf, in your Kindle and part of your audiobook library. It’s that important of a work. Then, I challenge you to experiment with and advocate for some of the ideas put forth. Doing so will take courage. It may even put you at risk, but at least you’ll be choosing that risk and you’ll never wonder if you could have done more.

Great work by Mark (once again!). This book is filling the gaps between management team (especially C-Level folks) and Agile-DevOps team. Most of books or talks are more about on Dev-Ops-Sec or Buz team, usually ignores managerial level inputs. However Mark described well in this book with his real world experiences.

Review

"Wolfe has perhaps provided the clearest statement of an American Muslim since Malcolm X." —Journal of Near Eastern Studies"The most engaging of travel books . . . his pilgrimage will move people of all faiths—and of none at all, because it describes a universal journey for meaning, transcendence and peace." —The Literary Review"Wolfe lifts the veil on this ancient and sacred duty, simultaneously presenting a lively and sympathetic picture of Muslims." —Publishers Weekly"It requires a special sensitivity to write well about the Hadj. . . . Michael Wolfe’s tone is exactly right." —The Times Literary Supplement

From the Back Cover

The hadj, or sacred journey, is the pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims are enjoined to make once in their lifetimes. Its purpose is to detach human beings from their homelands and, by bringing them to Mecca, temporarily reinstate the equality of all people before God. One of the world's longest-lived religious rites, the hadj has continued without break for fourteen hundred years. It is, like most things Islamic, shrouded in mystery for Westerners. In his new book, Michael Wolfe, an American-born writer and recent Muslim convert, recounts his experiences on this journey, and in the process brings readers closer to the meaning of Islam. Wolfe's book bridges the high points of the Muslim calendar, beginning in April with the annual month-long fast of Ramadan. In Morocco, he settles into daily life with a merchant family in the ancient quarter of Marrakesh. During his three-month stay, he explores the intricate traditional life of Muslim Morocco. His accounts of this time deepen our feeling for Islam, a faith that claims one-sixth of the world's population. As summer approaches, he travels north to Tangier, where he visits Western writers and Moroccan mystics. In June, he arrives in Mecca, a city closed to all but Muslims. The protean experience of the hadj, and the real Mecca, that most religious and mysterious of cities, are captured in the last half of the book. Inevitably, the buildup to the Gulf War hovers in the background - the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait is just weeks away. Yet it is the author's participation in the age-old rites of the hadj that most preoccupies his thoughts, strengthening his bond to the faith he has embraced as an outsider, developing and transforming it, makingit personal and alive.

So clearly written! I knew Michael Wolfe when we were teenagers. He was already a brilliant poet. He was very deeply longing for knowledge and meaning back then. This is a journey. It continues. For someone who dwells on the negative aspects of religion, he helps me understand some of the reasons people --smart people-- embrace it.

An exceptionally well written travel book first and foremost, Wolfe's The Hadj also provides a thought provoking introduction to Islam from the perspective of a new American convert to that religion.

On the strength of a travelogue alone, I would give Wolfe's book a 4 star. It has all the ingredients of a piece written by a well-read traveler: historical contexts, quotations from predecessors who have traveled the same path, descriptive passages concerning both landscape and human figures, and most importantly, a show of restraint by withholding ethnocentric judgments that fly all too easily when cultures collide. The Hadj is a good primer for stateside readers whose only education about Islam consists of shouting pundits on fair and balanced news stations. It shows that there is a majority of Muslims who are not concerned with violence and are not preoccupied throughout the day with terrorist thoughts. The problem begins when readers approach the book expecting either a political angle or a spiritual angle. We don't expect a travel journal about London to delve into a detailed commentary about imperialistic regimes achieved through naval superiority, so why should the author of the Hadj need to impose Western concepts of egalitarian societies onto his observations? I found that as long as I read the Hadj as nothing but a travelogue, it was quite satisfying.Every person has their reasons for embarking on a spiritual journey, so I won't question Wolfe's true reasons. I will confess that at the opening of the book, when I read these lines "I was looking for a framework I could live with, a vocabulary of spiritual concepts applicable to the life I was living now. I did not want to 'trade in' my culture. I wanted access to new meanings," and later on, "The more I learned about Islam, the more it appeared to conform to what I was looking for"; I almost put down the book and stopped right there. An Assyrian friend of mine once said: "Many Americans have an odd way of treating religion: They pick and choose as if they were at a spiritual buffet. They pluck what they need from each culture to meet their conveniences." It's true. We drop Zen when we're too lazy to provide an explanation; we pull out the Kaballah when we have lost our mystery; we get a bit of relaxation from the Hindu yogis after a hard week at work, and confess to being a Christian when there's a sale on red wine.Islam is not on the menu. Islam means "obedience, submission to god, surrender of the self."So when Wolfe prefaces his book about a spiritual journey by announcing that Islam appeals to his personal needs, it pretty much sets the stage for one's expectations from the book in terms of spirituality. I felt that there were moments when the author was more intent on observing his surroundings, seeking comfort and relief from the heat and exhaustion, and completing a business deal involving the sale of used cars, then embarking on a spiritual journey. At the height of the Hadj for example (at Mount Mercy) when colleagues of the author busied themselves with reading the Qu'ran, he goes off to look for drinks, friends, shelter, and a better view. I was continually befuddled at why a novice wouldn't try his hardest to seek enlightenment when standing on the spiritual center of his new religion. It's these moments I felt the book should really be read as a travelogue about the Hadj, and not as one man's personal spiritual journey. I won't rule out the fact that as a novice convert at that time, Wolfe may still have some time before coming into his own. So there's no judgment made here. Just sharing an observation for those who expect to gain insight on the spiritual angle.A bibliography of further reading and a helpful glossary completes this book. A breezy read for us Kafirs who need a bit of education about our Muslim brothers and sisters.

In this book Michael Wolfe, an American convert to Islam has described his personal Hadj to Makkah beautifully. The pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, that is a principal religious obligation of adult Muslims. He has described the Hadj in steps, ritual by ritual and by giving their meanings, as well as his own thoughts, ideas, emotions..etc at that point in time. His journey starts from Morocco, where he went before Hadj, to gain some knowledge and to live in the Islamic environment. He has given a lot of information about Moroccon people, their life, culture and relationship with each other. He gives a lot of information about Muslim people and their culture in general, such as Brotherhood in Islam for example. Where ever he went he was accepted as one of the family member - a brother. This he says was one of the beautiful things that Islam has gives to people and which is specific to Muslims only, which Malcolm X has noticed too when he made his own Hadj.I bought this book because I wanted to know, a Westerner's opinion on Islamic topics such as Hadj, from Western perspective.I must say this book was a wonderful read for me, and I am sure it will be the same for you.

Readers expecting insights into Islamic spirituality will find this a different kind of book. Its first half describes a long visit to Marrakesh during which the author is the house guest of an old friend who is a shop owner in the Old City's bazaar. A recent convert to Islam in California, Wolfe discovers how the teachings of Muhammad infuse the daily life and culture of this Moroccan city. The second half of the book describes his own hadj (pilgrimage) to Mecca, where millions of the faithful gather once each year from around the world for a week and more of religious ritual and visits to sacred sites as guests of the Saudi government. Rather than the recounting of a spiritual experience, however, Wolfe's narrative is a detailed report of things seen, heard, and felt, much like a travelogue. The decision may have been to reserve comment on the impact of hadj on his own faith, but it's an unexpected choice.More curious is Wolfe's uncritical acceptance of the male-dominated culture he describes. Men and men only go together to mosque for prayers, and the pilgrims he travels with are all male. Except for his friend Mostopha's wife, who seems always to be cooking and keeping house, women hardly figure in his book, even his own wife back home, who gets scarcely a mention. Meanwhile, he praises the classless and color-blind egalitarianism of hadj as it's observed, while failing to make note of his privilege as an American, able to afford rooms in the comfort of air-conditioned hotels while the poor sleep rough at night, sometimes in tunnels only inches from passing traffic. The shortcomings of other religions notwithstanding, these are odd oversights, even for the 1990s, when it was first published.Still, for non-Muslims, this is as close as one can get to an experience of pilgrimage to Mecca. And Wolfe does readers a service by observing so closely and sharing so much. For an account of hadj from a woman's point of view, read Asra Nomani's "Standing Alone in Mecca."

I recommend this book for all architecture students for their early college curriculum. This issue is a value reprint with low quality illustrations of a early 20th century translation. Amazing who many Wikipedia articles refer to this text and the extent of technology developed in the first century and lost and rediscovered over a thousand years later.

I am of the age group that had had rigorous courses through eight years of European "Gimnazium" type high schooling. I found the book very interesting, giving an insight of Roman construction methods and materials. I would have been happier if the book were bilingual.

Love it. I’m not an architect and I enjoyed the read very much. Vitruvius was an interesting dude.

For a serious student of architecture this excellent "history" value of "why" style, technics, etc., that we use today have developed.

If you know about this book(s) or the author, you probably don't need to be told it's a must read. Though if you are beginning in the field, the text can be hard to grasp at times (it does help to have some background in Roman history and architecture to really appreciate this book, as there are no footnotes to provide this extra information). As for the electronic edition itself, it is somewhat poorly executed. Some characters were wrongly read by the OCR machine. It doesn't imper the reading much, but some more careful editing would have been welcomed, especially since the text can be found elsewhere for free.Overall, I would be searching for another electronic copy of Vitruvius' works.

Very informational and quite candid, funny how Roman's thought that being an architect took little knowledge. Quote from the book,"If thy son be dull witted make him a page or an architect ".

A wonderful book to read about foundation values of classical architecture and includes many interesting stories and side tangents by the author. I you are studying architecture you need to read this book!

This book was part of a Christmas gift for our grandson, who recently told us he is enjoying the book.
