We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted with a hopeless situation, when facing a fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness to the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn one's predicament into a human achievement. Victor Frankl (1959, p. 112) When I began this research, I had met so many women who described how postpartum depression (PPD) had changed them in powerful ways. I had met women who amazed me with their stories of survival, strength, and commitment to help others despite unimaginable pain. They had suffered--greatly. But many, if not the majority, told me that the suffering served as a catalyst for significant personal change. Some change involved loss--women who never had another child, or had lost permanent custody of their children. Others had told me how PPD changed their goals or motivations in life--changing careers, starting non-profit organizations. The change women spoke of was profound. This change was my interest as a researcher. What was it about the nature of PPD to change the trajectory of a woman's life? How does a woman experience this change? What could we learn from women that might deepen our understanding of the pathology and its meaning in women's lives? Questions like these fueled my curiosity.Underlying my wonder was a constant voice telling me there is more to women who suffer from a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder than just disease. I knew that science had only evidenced a part of the whole experience of PPD. We have benefitted tremendously from scientific inquiry into postpartum depression. We know more today than ever about the phenomenon of PPD. But then, why is it still so prevalent? And if we know that the vast majority of women who get PPD go undetected, what happens to them? Moreover, what about women who do suffer in view of science--those who score high on the screening instruments, those who meet diagnostic criteria (such that it is), who had risk factors known to increase likelihood of developing PPD, those who experienced the symptoms described in medical journals, those who undergo treatment that has been demonstrated to show some relief. What of them? Is that all there is? A laundry list of labels and recovery and then it's over? I knew from my own experience that PPD is never over. It lingers. PPD marks a point on the map of one's life when things change forever. That point on the map is where I set up basecamp.Â

Indeed this monster did not swallow these women alive, but they became different people, transformed by postpartum depression.The picture of the author on the back of the book describes this book perfectly - Dr. Karraa is seen sitting in what looks like a tunnel illuminated by a bright light behind her, as if leading the reader to describe both the darkness and the transformative light at the end of the tunnel. Dr. Karraa acts as our guide on a journey to a strange and frightening land, calmly taking our hand and teaching us through her research on recollections of women Before, During, and After PPD. She leaves no stone unturned, no aspect ignored or too uncomfortable to address, and writing with the highest order of respect and admiration for her participants, whose (too often ignored) thoughts and feelings finally have a place.To understand PPD, one must not only be able to identify it, but to understand the way it changes women's lives. Most people don't overlook this, don't understand this or even think about it--I certainly didn't. This book taught me the transformative role that PPD plays in the lives of women, in ways I would not have even guessed.As a RN, I was greatly embarrassed by the documented accounts of how poorly health professionals of all kinds dealt with women who were so gravely struggling. One quote that stood out for me, in reference to a heartbreaking healthcare worker fail, was "Why didn't she ever just look into my eyes & say 'How are you?'"That's what this book was all about. Giving people the tools to understand--REALLY understand--what women go through with PPD from firsthand accounts. Highly recommend for health professionals, women with PPD and their family members, or moms who just want to know that other people feel that way too.

Great book!

Thank you, Walker Karraa, PhD, for shedding light on and sharing real women's stories of postpartum depression. Women's authentic experience of pregnancy and motherhood must be heard. Honestly, at times I found this ultimately hopeful book difficult to read, for it kept bringing back memories of my own traumatic birth experience, which I will spare you here (suffice it to say, I remember the pain quite well). Unlike many of the women interviewed by Dr. Walker, I had been under treatment for depression for almost 20 years before I became a mother. The family practitioner who delivered my son was the same physician who prescribed my antidepressants. Plus, her husband was a psychiatrist. They kept me in the hospital longer than the other mothers, and though they didn't say so, I was pretty sure it was because they were assessing me for PPD given my history - for that I am thankful.

The size they list is probably the maximum size book that will fit inside. The composition book pictured is 9.75" by 7.5" and .25 thick and it is a little tight in the corners.

I bought the Adventure bible for my son, looked at the measurements of that bible and ordered this case based on those measurements. It swims in this case. The measurements are not accurate at all.

It is significantly bigger (about 10" x 7.5" and almost two inches thick) than advertised, so a lot of Bibles are going to shift around and feel loose inside. My son actually likes the size, as he can put his iPad Mini or Nintendo Switch in the case comfortably with his Bible, but trying to read your Bible with this cover on it feels sort of like moving around in clothes that are two sizes too big.The interior pockets and pen loop are functional, the zipper works well, and the ichthus badge on the front is a nice touch. But the material is very thin, like paper-thin, and there is absolutely no cushioning or double layering. And the stitching on the handle is not reinforced. I don't think this Bible cover is good for kids, who like to swing their Bibles around a bit and take them on outdoor retreats.

I bought this Bible cover as a gift for my 11-year-old daughter to go with her new Bible. Her absolute favorite color is purple, so she liked it immediately for that reason alone. She feels that it is a bit too large for her pocket-sized Bible; however, she doesn't mind because it gives her plenty of room to keep her pens, highlighter, and notebook paper (and whatever else she may want/need to take to church on any given Sunday). She is very pleased with it, which pleases me. I anticipate her decorating it with markers and stickers pretty soon though (probably a weekend project lol). We'll have to see how it holds up to wear and tear after a bit of use.

Product arrived earlier than expected. Bible cover is great. It is light weight and durable. It has a pen loop inside, small pocket for mini highlighters (I bought gel non-bleed through highlighters) or you can put candy in there. Also has a pocket on exterior to put your notebook in. Love this.

Better quality than those stretchy covers. Fits a thick hardback book. I couldn’t find a non-religious themed zippered canvas book cover, so I got this and snipped off seen on agape symbol. Zipper pull has cross but it’s not intrusive. I don’t mind religious book covers for bibles but I’d like plain ones for novels.

Bought one for my son. It's ok, but it's starting to rip around the seams a little bit already after just a couple months of use. Now that may be because he tries to cram so much into it, but still seems like it should have held up better over such a short time frame.

handy case fro my Bible. Plenty of room for a notebook or other items you may use with your Bible. Sturdy zipper and handle. Now I can carry my Bible and know it is protected. Also any thing I else I use along with it. It was just a little larger the the Bible that I have. But this was the closest size to the Bible I wanted it for.

About the Author

NORMAN CURREY was born on the North Sea Coast if Scarborough, Yorkshire, in 1926. His first experience with aircraft was in the Air Training Corps from 1941 to 1943, and after high school he attended the de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School for four years at Harfield, a few miles north of London. After graduating, he worked as a stress engineer at de Havilland on the Comet, and then sailed to Canada where he was a design engineer at Avro Aircraft for 10 years, working mostly in its Initial Projects Office. He then worked Lockheed for 30 years on the C-130, C-5, JetStar and conducting research and development in their Preliminary Design department. Since retirement he did some consulting and presented lectures to the South Korean Agency Defense Development. He is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and has published many articles, presented papers at two SAE Systems Conferences, and has published a book on landing gear design (AIAA).

I guess I thought it would be safe to assume that–at ten dollars–it would probably size-up somewhere along the lines of the $15 LonelyPlanet Cancun guide that has 320 colorful pages in it. But no. You just get thirty four, big-print pages of what amounts *not* to an adjective-filled description of the delights that await you in Cancun, but instead a meandering essay written by someone who maybe signed up for a Spanish class to take advantage of that sweet annual trip to Mexico, but then found out later that they would also be forced to write a paper about it.Also, there is an interesting number of photographs in this book: zero. Which I consider to be rather odd for the genre. Couple those non-existent photos with the tiresome text, and you'll find that this book doesn't exactly create a place where one can be inspired to imagine how great their Cancun vacation could be... Unless of course they plan to spend that vacation reading a bunch of tiny books.I literally began the process of returning this book immediately after opening the envelope it came in.

This is a big but really useful book. It can be hard to read any book like this as it brings home another side of the impact that Alzheimers will have, but worth reading before you need to change things rather than waiting for an accident. I just changed some of our furniture to make it safer (eg. we had glass coffee tables) and am glad I did this while my husband is still well enough to absorb the change easily. Many things I need, like locks, window guards, door alarms, I get from baby-proof stores/departments as this can often be the best value; moreover, many of the baby-proof things are easy to remove (like locks on fridges), I guess because there's an assumption that the child will grow up so you won't need the baby-proofing forever.

This is a wonderful resource book - it has several of my favorite things a good resource book has to have. Great problem solving ideas for at home alzheimer's care, you never thought of before but wonder why you didn't. A fantastic table of contents, where under each chaper is listed all the ideas contained. And an extensive index in the back, so you have a second way of finding the particular problem you are trying to solve. In the book there are sidebars on each page that show the names of companies that sell the products they mention on that page (there's a list in back of book showing address and phone number of each company). Also suggested conversations for diversion/redirection are in sidebars. I really glad to have this book as a resource for me to help my clients. It's jammed full of ideas.

I wish I didn't need a resource like this, but that said, this book provides a lot of very helpful information. The way the chapters are organized makes it easy to read cover-to-cover, or to look up topics on an as-needed basis. I especially appreciate the details regarding how a person's brain might be expected to perceive, organize, and retrieve information differently throughout disease progression. That has helped me to think proactively about ways to help my loved one.

This book is full of practical suggestions, for example, leaving the light on in the bathroom and nowhere else at night, to suggest to the person with Alzheimer's where he/she might want to go. This has worked well for us. Very helpful for anyone dealing with Alzheimer's, and wanting to plan for the future.

Dated material. Book should be de-circulated and or destroyed. New products and technologies make many solutions obsolete. At least the written date should be noted.

This book was excellent for suggestions for proofing a home as apposed to an institution. I recommend it for home caregiver.

I know the records are extremely sparse for researching African American women who worked in the Suffrage Movement. However, there is a Nashville, TN woman who was left out and for no good reason. Her information is well documented an easy to find. I am the founder of a monument to five suffragists including Juno Frankie (Seay) Pierce, an African American who was very active here in Nashville. She spoke at the first meeting of the Tennessee League of Women Voters and founded a school for orphaned girls who were being threatened with jail. She is buried at Greenwood Cemetery on Elm Hill Pike in Nashville. The statue is in Centennial Park in Nashville and includes 4 Tennessee women as well as Carrie Chapman Catt. I am the lawyer who set up the non-profit and selected a board of nine women who raised $750,000 in private donations to commission the statue by local artist Alan LeQuire. Frankie Pierce should have been included in this book, but sadly she was not.

Thanks to Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, founder of the Association of Black Women Historians for her research and determination to bring into focus the African American women in the struggle for the vote for seven decades. As a researcher on suffrage and women's rights between 1900 and 1920 I have found so little information about the contributions of women of color to the cause. They were excluded from white women's clubs and even segregated in the marches, parades and protests. More attention has always been paid to the upper middle class, The NEW WHITE Women and the affluent women who could fund the cause and wield their power connected to their husbands and the General Federation of Women's Clubs founded in 1890. Ms. Terborg-Penn analyzes the racism and classism that prevailed in the society and politics of the time. Anyone interested in knowing about the divisions in education and social status needs to absorb this book for the truth and the heroic and independent black women who braved the cruelty and prejudice to establish their own identity in the struggle for the vote and equality.

Order received in good condition. This book is an excellent resource to me. I'm taking an American history class and I'm writing a paper on women's rights. This book is just what I needed to incorporate the African American women who fought for women's right's in this time period.

I am a women's history historian and I simply cannot finish this book. I have invested the majority of my education and research concerning myself with the issue of race in regards to woman suffrage - which is ultimately the primary reason I purchased this book. At the suggestion of a professor, I picked up the book and began to read. I simply could not deal with the vast amount of disregard Terborg-Penn has for the facts. Throughout the narrative, her own "agenda" seeps through the pages in an effort to convey her own beliefs without offering up any real hard evidence. While the subject of race is very sensitive in regard to suffrage, the lengths at which Terborg-Penn goes to make her own opinions known almost disregards her entire scholarship on the subject. Why does anyone want to hear your disagreements with other historians when there is no "hard evidence" to back up your interpretation of events? I just simply cannot review this book in a positive light because of the gaping holes in her argument. For example - in the early pages of the narrative, Terborg-Penn is arguing her belief that Stanton was (more or less) a racist, and in the event that Stanton, given a choice between fighting for the plight of slaves or that of elite white women - she would most certainly choose the latter. Terborg-Penn further elabortes by discussing Elisabeth Griffin's argument on Stanton, which explained Stanton's attack against black men on account of their gender- not race. Terborg-Penn follows this up with "I disagree. The facts do not support this argument." (No facts listed after this.... paragraph ends.....) Her argument for black women never addressed the plight of the slaves or even black women supporting other black women- but rather, Terborg-Penn insisted that black women could fight racism and sexism simultaneously. How are those scenarios even similar?
