As a member of the IC Division at Mentor Graphics Corporation, I am fortunate to have worked with many bright, talented software engineers, developing very large systems. Back in 1985, Mentor Graphics became one of the first companies to attempt a truly large project in C++. Back then no one knew how to do that, and no one could have anticipated the cost overruns, slipped schedules, huge executables, poor performance, and incredibly expensive build times that a naive approach would inevitably produce. Many valuable lessons were learned along the way - knowledge obtained through bitter experience. There were no books to help guide the design process; object-oriented designs on this scale had never before been attempted. Ten years later, with a wealth of valuable experience under its belt, Mentor Graphics has produced several large software systems written in C++, and in doing so has paved the way for others to do the same without having to pay such a high price for the privilege. During my 13 years as a C (turned C++) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software developer, I have seen over and over again that planning ahead invariably produces a higher-quality, more maintainable product. My emphasis at Mentor Graphics has been on helping to ensure that quality is an integral part of the design process from the very start. In 1990 I developed the graduate course "Object-Oriented Design and Programming" at Columbia University. As the instructor of this course since 1991, I have had the opportunity to share many of the insights that we at Mentor Graphics gained during our industrial-strength software development efforts. Questions and feedback from literally hundreds of graduate students and professional programmers have helped me to crystallize many important concepts. This book is a direct result of that experience. To my knowledge, this is the first text that identifies development and quality issues that arise only in large C++ projects. I hope that this information will be as useful in your work as it is in mine. Audience Large-Scale C++ Software Design was written explicitly for experienced C++ software developers, system architects, and proactive quality-assurance professionals. This book is particularly appropriate for those involved in large development efforts such as databases, operating systems, compilers, and frameworks. Developing a large-scale software system in C++ requires more than just a sound understanding of the logical design issues covered in most books on C++ programming. Effective design also requires a grasp of physical design concepts that, although closely tied to the technical aspects of development, include a dimension with which even expert professional software developers may have little or no experience. Yet most of the advice presented in this book also applies to small projects. It is typical for a person to start with a small project and then begin to take on larger and more challenging enterprises. Often the scope of a particular project will expand, and what starts out as a small project becomes a major undertaking. The immediate consequences of disregarding good practice in a large project, however, are far more severe than they are for disregarding good practice in a smaller project. This book unites high-level design concepts with specific C++ programming details to satisfy two needs: An object-oriented design book geared specifically to practical aspects of the C++ programming language. A C++ programming book describing how to use the C++ programming language to develop very large systems. Make no mistake, this is an advanced text. This is not the book from which to learn C++ syntax for the first time, nor is it likely to expose you to the dark corners of the language. Instead, this book will show you how to use the full power of the C++ language in ways that scale well to very large systems. In short, if you feel that you know C++ well, but would like to understand more about how to use the language effectively on large projects, this book is for you. Examples in this Text Most people learn by example. In general, I have supplied examples that illustrate real-world designs. I have avoided examples that illustrate one point but have blatant errors in other aspects of the design. I have also tried to avoid examples that illustrate a detail of the language but serve no other useful purpose. Except where otherwise indicated, all examples in this text are intended to represent "good design." Examples presented in earlier chapters are therefore consistent with all practices recommended throughout the book. A disadvantage of this approach is that you may see code that is written differently from the code you are used to seeing, without yet knowing exactly why. I feel that being able to use all of the examples in the book for reference compensates for this drawback. There are two notable exceptions to this practice: comments and package prefixes. Comments for many of the examples in this text have simply been omitted for lack of space. Where they are presented, they are at best minimal. Unfortunately, this is one place where the reader is asked to "do as I say, not as I do" -- at least in this book. Let the reader be assured that in practice I am scrupulous about commenting all interfaces as I write them (not after). The second exception is the inconsistent use of package prefixes in the early examples of the book. In a large project environment package prefixes are required, but they are awkward at first and take some getting used to. I have elected to omit the consistent use of registered package prefixes until after they are formally presented in Chapter 7, so as not to detract from the presentation of other important fundamental material. Many texts note that inline functions are used in examples for textual brevity when illustrating intended functionality. Since much of this book is directly related to organizational issues such as when to inline, my tendency will be to avoid inline functions in examples. If a function is declared inline, there is a justification for it beyond notational convenience. Developing large systems in C++ is a constant series of engineering trade-offs. There are almost no absolutes. It is tempting to make statements using words such as never and always. Such statements allow for a simplified presentation of the material. For the level of C++ programmers whom I expect will read this book, such sweeping statements would be challenged - and rightly so. To avoid getting side-tracked in such situations, I will state what is (almost) always true, and then provide a footnote or a pointer to the exceptional case. There are a variety of popular file name extensions used to distinguish C++ header files and C++ implementation files. For example: Header File Extensions:.h .hxx .H .h++ .hh .hpp Implementation File Extensions: .c .cxx .C .c++ .cc .cpp Throughout the examples we consistently use the .h extension to identify C++ header files and the .c extension to identify C++ implementation files. In the text, we will frequently refer to header files as .h files and to implementation files as .c files. Finally, all of the examples in this text have been compiled and are syntactically correct using SUN's version of CFRONT 3.0 running on SUN SPARC stations, as well as on HP700 series machines running their native C++ compiler. Of course, any errors are the sole responsibility of the author. A Road Map There is a lot of material to cover in this book. Not all readers will have the same background. I have therefore provided some basic (but essential) material in Chapter 1 to help level the field. Expert C++ programmers may choose to skim this section or simply refer to it if needed. Chapter 2 contains a modest collection of software design rules that I would hope every experienced developer will quickly ratify. Chapter 0: Introduction. An overview of what lies in wait for the large-scale C++ software developer. PART I: BASICS Chapter 1: Preliminaries. A review of basic language information, common design patterns, and style conventions used in this book. Chapter 2: Ground Rules. Important design practices that should be followed in any C++ project. The remainder of the text is divided into two main sections. The first, entitled "Physical Design Concepts," presents a sequence of important topics related to the physical structure of large systems. The material in these chapters (3 through 7) focuses on aspects of programming that will be entirely new to many readers, and cuts right to the bone of large program design. This section is presented "bottom up," with each chapter drawing on information developed in previous chapters. PART II: PHYSICAL DESIGN CONCEPTS Chapter 3: Components. A truly ground-breaking book in 1996, it is no less useful today as a guide to, well, as the title says, large-scale software design. And although some of the concepts and implementation ideas are specific to the C/C++ family of languages, the principles are, to a surprising extent, language neutral. Even in the cases where the build/interpret systems of other languages would allow relaxing some of the design rules with no manifest issues, virtually all of the rules contribute to arbitrarily large software systems that are easy to use, understand, and maintain. This book is a must-read for every student and professional who aspires to the title of software engineer.

The structure laid out however exposes some of the 'laws of physics of large software bodies' and is therefore a must read for a _practicing_ architect, i.e. not someone who stays in 'models' only but is concerned how to get the actual code to work and be maintianble over long periods of time.

One of the few texts in the literature to deal with development and quality issues that arise in large C++ projects.It introduces the concept of component and package as the unit of physical design. On this concepts the text develops extremely valuable design rules, practices and techniques (to name a few: factoring, escalating encapsulation, protocol classes, fully insulating concrete classes) to obtain critical qualities (like levelization and insulation) for large-scale C++ projects.The text gives also rules and techniques that address logical design issues in perfect harmony with the techniques related to physical design issues.Although it was written back in 1997, the book remains as timely as ever, given that exposes the same problems that justify the likely introduction of Contracts and Modules in the next C++17 standard.I strongly recommend the book to any C++ developer who wants to take advantage of the precious experience gained by the author in the context of really large C++ projects.

This book is a must-read for any serious C++ programmer. Why? Because it is the only decent treatment of physical C++ design available.Physical design issues, if not addressed, will inexorably cripple any sufficiently complex, performance-sensitive C++ project. Moreover, there is never any time to worry about physical design quality in the heat of battle, so you really need to deal with it up front.Having said that, the book is not without its flaws.First, the age of the text is evident. It doesn't address the interchangeability of typedefs and classes for certain purposes, it doesn't fully appreciate the power of namespaces, and it is rife with "the World didn't go that way" conventions. Fortunately, this doesn't prevent the book from getting its point across, but you do need to take some of its "rules" with a grain of salt.Second, it's longer than it needs to be. This isn't so much of a liability, because it reads faster as a result. Still, its redundancy and long-windedness is sometimes tedious.But all in all, if you've bothered to read this review, then you probably ought to own a copy of this book.

This book was recommended to me by a professor. It is very enlightening book about OOP programming and even though this books older it is very much in line with a lot of videos I am seeing online. I would recommend this book if you have programmed your self into a corner multiple times with C++ or another OOP language.

This is a superb book on software design. While clearly intended for those working on large-scale projects with a broad base of users, the principles discussed are rock solid for even the smallest project. It illustrates a higher level of C++ where objects are not just used because they can represent complex concepts nicely but because proper object-orientation is insurance against many coding evils - exactly the evils which can sabotage large-scale software projects.

I read this book back in 1998. It is the foundation for my understanding of the design of object oriented software. Prior to reading this book I programmed in C++ for more than 8 years. It was apparent to me that there were gaps in my understanding of how to design medium and large scale object oriented systems. This is a huge and dense book, but as I read through it, many times a light went on in my head (those ah ha moments).The book also gives specific details about consideration for the C++ language. C++ has changed over the years, and the examples do not use newer language features. I do not feel that this is important. The code clearly illustrates the ideas, which are not limited by the state of C++ at the time the code was written.Regardless of the object oriented language you use to develop software this book will teach invaluable concepts that I have not found explained elsewhere.

Good book but a bit dated. Modern C++ features have obsoleted some of the advice in here, but the focus is right. I'm looking forward to the next edition of this, due out some time soon.

Her photography of Dallas, Mexico, and Egypt has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in Texas and beyond, and she has been photographer and coauthor of several books, including four promotional books on Dallas.

I bought this for my boss's 80th birthday; he grew up around Caddo Lake (the only natural lake in Texas) and still goes there to fish and just hang out with pals. He was stunned by the photography, and every time he visits his friends there he takes it with him to show it off. It's become almost like his personal autograph book -- everyone signs their favorite page, and he is beside himself with joy!Even of you're not from this neck of the woods (I'm not a native), the photography and history is breathtaking. The paper is of a glossy type, which really makes the pictures stand out in rich color. (I will be ordering a few more for him so he can give his Caddo friends their own copy at Christmas!)

The idea of a human energy field is not new; numerous books have been published on the subject, many of which I've seen on Amazon. I do think it makes sense, to some extent, that the human body should be surrounded by such a field or fields. As the author herself states, our psyche and spirit need protection just as much as our physical body does. The author of this book, Cyndi Dale, cites numerous scientific sources as evidence that these fields do exist. Of course, Kirlian photography has been around for many years now. For those who might not be familiar with this type of photography, it's basically a technique used to photograph the electrical discharges surrounding people and other living beings, including plants. Dale briefly discusses this process in the first chapter, "Energy and our Energetic Fields".This book also deals with the subject of the chakras, which are centers of energy in the physical body, and are also part of what is known as "the subtle body". These centers of energy are a well-known aspect of Hindu beliefs, and specifically, the yogic tradition.Although I do feel that much of New Age philosophy, psychology, and spirituality needs to be taken with a grain of salt, I nevertheless enjoyed reading this book. It's not one for casual reading, either; in fact, studying it will yield more food for thought than just one reading will provide.The author introduces the concept of energy balancing with an exploration of the four basic energy boundaries -- the physical, the emotional, the relational, and the spiritual. These are actually comprised of several of the twelve auric layers surrounding the physical body, and each has a different color, when viewed clairvoyantly; the physical is red, the emotional, orange, the relational, green, and the spiritual, white. She also discusses what life events can have detrimental effects on each of the boundaries.Next, she presents the eight specific boundary issues that most people will typically encounter. These she calls "spiritual syndromes".The first of them is named "The Paper Doll Syndrome", the basic manifestation of which being an endless repetition of the same troubling pattern in at least one area of a person's life. This might be, for example, a substance addiction that the person can't seem to break, or a pattern of getting involved in abusive relationships, also persistent in spite of therapy.The second boundary issue is named "The Vampire Syndrome". This one deals with the curious phenomenon of feeling energetically drained after being around certain people. It can manifest as a feeling of exhaustion, frustration or lack of motivation, as well.The third boundary issue, known as "The Mule Syndrome", is related to being a workaholic, of feeling duty-bound to take up the slack for others. It even involves worrying about others' concerns, to one's own detriment. Some of the qualities Dale claims for crystals just seem to have no basis in scientific fact. Colors, on the other hand, do have valid psychological associations, although I'm not totally convinced of the therapeutic benefits thereof.Subsequent chapters deal with working on boundary issues to help in specific areas, such as work and success, financial issues, relationships, and parenting.Specific techniques that I do think are useful are "Uncovering Your Storyline", which is a means of digging into one's psyche in order to discover the origin of one's boundary issues, the use of sound therapy (music has scientifically been proven to profoundly affect the brain, and therefore, moods), visualization, and prayer. Although the author refers to God mostly as "the Divine", she does have a rather Christian-sounding tone in these sections of the book. I especially like her reference to "streams of grace" coming from God to take away the symptoms of the above-named syndromes.Again, this is a book that can be best appreciated by studying it, and putting its techniques into practice. While perhaps not everything will be helpful to individual readers (this depends on each reader's beliefs, as well as degree of skepticism), there is much to reflect on here, psychologically as well as philosophically speaking, not to mention the spiritual sense. Each chapter in the book is annotated, with references to scientific research articles on the Internet, for instance, as well as spiritually-related ones. There's also a bibliography for further reading.The tone of the writing is very soothing and peaceful, yet, the concepts discussed will ensure the reader's full attention. Dale never talks down to her readers, nor doe she engage in filling her chapters with any kind of jargon; in fact, she explains potentially new or confusing terms in clear, easy-to-understand language.In short, this book will not only be appreciated by veteran New Age adherents, but also by those who are open-minded enough to investigate a field of knowledge that might not entirely be sanctioned by the scientific establishment, yet, remains totally fascinating!

I love Cyndi Dale's work and have a number of her books. As a Healing Touch practitioner and Reiki Master I know tons about energy work, chakras, auras, empaths, etc., but again the author took me where I hadn't been before! I am integrating what I've learned from this book into my practice with my clients, and I also use the techniques on myself. For example, I had no idea you could be connected to the land where you were born! I saw where people I know would fall into the personalties (or syndromes) she describes in her book such as the Mule and the Healer. As a student of psychology, I also knew we repeated patterns by our subconscious minds driving us, but I never factored in the additional impact of our energy fields. An excellent book even if you might think you already know it all as a healer.

This book is so rich and so helpful. I've spent hundreds of dollars on programs that have promised results but failed to deliver any relevant teaching. Cyndi is quite the opposite... I feel like I could spend a lifetime with her and still never stop learning. She is really tapped into Divine energy and her books reflect that. After reading and rereading chapters, I feel like I'm growing as a person and as an energetic being. My boundary issues are slowly starting to heal.

Very interesting read. I haven't made it all the way through yet but so far it has helped me start to build better boundaries, not just build walls but actually have steady secure boundaries that protect and comfort instead of just walling myself off. Some of the exercises are a little confusing, as far as what I am being asked to do but it is great information and very helpful for fixing, repairing or, in some cases rebuilding my boundaries. I would recommend this book.

Very helpful for sensitive people (or for anyone, for that matter) who have trouble with establishing themselves as whole individuals. By that, I mean those of us who are sensitive to energy dynamics that others put out and that we feel keenly, and have a hard time dealing with. It gives solid advice on how to set boundaries, how to empower yourself so that you're not as overwhelmed by external energy dynamics, and explains the whole topic well. I recommend this book.

My review has nothing to do with the distributor (it was delivered in expected condition and on time). My review is directly related to the utterly confounding nature of this book that completely lacks science and substance. I tried. I gave this book break after break but ultimately had to throw it in the trash because the lack of substance was too disturbing and I could not stand it anymore. I've only thrown a book away one other time and I'm glad I did it then too.

My BFF recommended this book. She thought it would help with some of the issues I am facing at this part of my life journey (I am at the midpoint). She was absolutely right. This book presents an interesting angle of how to keep oneself from taking on other's pain, as well as how to heal one's own physical, emotional, and karmic wounds. As an empath, I believe I need to learn more about how to keep well in this world. If I am balanced and sharing my light I can be more helpful to others in this world.

This insightful reference covers the first five Vampire Chronicles books. It stops with Memnoch the Devil, which came out in 1995 when this revised softcover edition came out. It provides detailed explanations of situations, characters, themes, etc. It is in an alphabetical format. It also has quotes from Anne & Stan Rice & others. It has maps, black and white photos, drawings, and a short story precursor of Interview With the Vampire. It's approximately 550 pages.

Love Anne Rice. This book did help with some of the questions that I had. I was very surprised that there are no family trees. After all this time this book should have been updated. Anything after Memnoch the Devil is not included. I knew that going in so I am not upset about that. Please think about a new edition that includes the next book Prince Lestat and the realms of Atlantis.

It wasn't what I thought it was, but my fault. It's just a collection of what things mean in Anne Rice's vampire books which is fine if your a fan and want to have an encyclopedia of her terminology.

The Vampire Chronicles is a large enough series that keeping things straight is near impossible. I would recommend this for roleplayers, and for fans who enjoy discussion of the series.While the Companion is large and full of detail, there are points where I wish that it had more; in addition, it is only updated for Memnoch the Devil, and I would have preferred something which included all of the series.

If you are a reader of the vampire chronichles than you will probably like to own this book.I bought this book for a friend of mine because she is a big fan of Ann Rice.I so wish that a new version be made including things from the more recent books.I wish Ann Rice would write more as well so I dont need to reread the old books over and over

I am a big Anne Rice fan even if some Christians don't understand. It's just fantasy and not the Occult.

It's a great read. Gives a bit more "background" to Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles". Includes deleted parts and changes she has made to the books.

I always try to read what my children do, if for no other reason than to give us something to talk about. Because of my eldest, I read "Harry Potter." Because of my middle one, I was forced to read "Twilight." I may never forgive her for that. For my son, it was Rick Riordan. I may never be able to thank him enough. It was because of him that I discovered Percy Jackson and now, the Kane's.Even if you know nothing about the Egyptian pantheon (I always preferred the Greeks, myself) you will no doubt get drawn into the trials of the Kane's. The author has a wonderful way of making all of his characters, mortal and immortal alike, human (for want of a better word). You can easily imagine them as your children and their friends or even the people you grew up with.Don't pass this one by. And make sure you check out the author's other works, as well. You never know when and where their paths might cross and you don't want to be left out, I assure you.

I bought these on CD to keep my kids occupied during a road trip and ended up enjoying them as much as they did. It really helped to pass the time while driving. There was none of the usual bickering and fighting from the back seat. The story was narrated well and the Egyptian mythology was very interesting. I'm glad I had the idea to purchase an audio book for the trip and am very happy that I found this particular set while searching.

As these books have been written by the same author as the Percy Jackson novels, I worried that these books would be the same only with different gods. However the author uses a totally different format having two main narrators : Carter and Sadie Kane relating stories to a third party author.In these stories, we are introduced to the lesser known gods of Egypt and the main characters use magic rather than physical fighting skills. I believe that Rick has shown his development as a writer as the novels keep moving at a good pace and the balance between humor, action and romance is mostly about right.

My daughter is a HUGE Rick Riordan fan!!! Loves Magnus Chase, Apollo, Percy Jackson, all of them!! The books are so well written, witty and smart. She reads each series so fast because they are absolutely amazing. However, the Kane Chronicles have been a little bit of a disappointment in comparison to the others. Still very entertaining but she fiinds the Egyptian gods are much more confusing than the Roman/Greek and even the Norse gods.We bought the trilogy and she hasn't made it through the first book yet, which is unlike her. She hasn't given up on them, it's just not the page turner she's used to from Rick Riordan.I will update this tip once she finishes the trilogy!Update:She loves this series!! 5 stars! She couldn’t out it down. Rick Riordannis the best.

I bought these for my 10-yr-old daughter who loves to read. She is almost finished with the first book and is completely hooked! She likes to read at night and in the morning she goes on and on about the story, and how great-funny-awesome-insert more adjectives here- it is. I love that she likes to talk about the books with me, and I really love to see her immersed in a book. My only complaint is that I have to make her put the book down and go to sleep at night! 😉

If you've read the Percy Jackson books, you know they are pretty formulaic. If you didn't like that aspect of Percy Jackson, you will absolutely hate the Kane Chronicles. The boss fights don't seem to move the story along much, but rather just fill pages. The travel scenes are verbose and pointless. My 14-year-old could barely listen to some parts, and we skipped the last chapter altogether, since we'd already read three endings. The Kane children go by separate paths to the final battle, which just makes it more confusing for young readers. The Egyptian mythology was about the only thing that made these books interesting. There are enough good books for young readers that you can give this anthology a pass.

I enjoyed this trilogy of adventures with the Egyptian mythos and magicians, but the focus on just the brother and sister was too exclusive for my taste. In mr. Riordan's Greco-Roman demigod stories there are a well developed ensemble of characters rather than such a narrow focus, and I find I enjoyed those novels a bit more than these ones. I would still say these are well worth reading and give the series four stars.

I 💗Rick Rioradan his books made me a book worm! When I first started reading his 📚 it was thanks to the stupid boys in my class so I started with P J then I convinced myself to start the kan e chronicles omg I didn't want it to end to be honest! But this is my second favorite series of his so far after I'm done with H O O I'm going to read titles of Apollo maybe I'll even choice myself to read M C but me as a 11 year old girl I recommend theses 📚 thanks so much to the boys in my class for turning me into the only book worm!P.S O finished these books in almost five days yep that how much I'm onward with him get maybe if your like me you'll always hav e God 👃in a book instead on video games

Michael Naujok worked in a designer's office for three years, after finishing with his degree in mechanical engineering. In 1971 he built his first seven-meter cruiser. Only an initial section on tools... the rest is about boat interiors and is more than just interiors. Even a section on electrical systems, water systems, and soundproofing the engine compartment. Every thing that is included in the interior is covered. Great idea and design book. Far better than other interior books I have bought. Both sail and power craft shown. A Great Book, buy it first for interior ideas.

So glad I got this book--our boat is only a hull and needs everything! So this book is quite helpful. The main difference I want to be sure and do is, keep all surfaces padded wherever possible. People are badly injured in the cabin when hit by a big wave. They are also hit by things falling everywhere, so I plan to securely lock all compartments--no open shelving for me!

I ordered this book and needed a guide to the systems and methods I might encounter for reconstructing my boat's interior. I couldn't have made a better choice! As it turns out, this is one of the very best possible choices available. Great illustrations and step by step instructions on many tasks make this book one that I'll keep handy in the future.

This is a template guide , not a book with exact dimensions and steps. It's expected you have somewhat of an idea of what you are doing. Also its plain english, not some form of foreign english. Great book

I have a 1976 production sailboat that needs refurbishing. My needs have been established by 25-years of usage and I will swap unused bunk space for accessible storage. Michael Naujok will be my guide. I will enjoy his presence every step of the way. This is one beautiful book with clear, crisp color photographs showing the stages of fabrication, installation, and finishing. It's a very enjoyable companion.
