I'm slowing going through these CD's and they are ok. There is the required amount of repetition that you can rewind and get what they are saying in Japanese and the exercises on the CD are appropriate to get a beginner learning of the language. Not great with writing and alphabet. There is no explanation of the Japanese writing styles hiragana, katakana nor kanji nor is there any indication of the Japanese alphabet only sounds are given against the English alphabet, which is strange. The grammar and number explanation is otherwise good and explained simply so you get it. Not good with building up your vocab as the CD sticks to a few basic words e.g. karuma - is used in many examples. You do learn a few basic words, but don't practice a range of vocab. So it is good to get a beginner started and I would recommend it if you are going to travel to Japan.

Coming from the Pimsleur method of learning Japanese, this audio course felt rushed, and I felt I couldn't absorb as much information.The vocabulary words are shot at you 10-15 at a time, and there is little review before the next set of vocab, causing me to have to listen to each 1-minute-long "mile marker" over and over again.This is to Pimsleur as trying to memorize a dictionary is to learning from a textbook.It just doesn't seem prudent to listen to in the car because I find myself either listening to the 1-minute tracks on repeat until they sink in, or listen to a bunch at a time, and retaining nothing because the quizzing and recall flies by so quickly.Also, the response time is extremely short. I can barely answer the question in English in that amount of time.ALL THAT SAID, a strong vocabulary is necessary obviously, and I am eager to get to a level where this tape will be useful for me. For right now, I'm going to settle for the Pimsleur method of simple vocabulary, and focusing on grammar and sentence structure.

This tape course is great for people who really want/need in-depth Japanese lessons or review. You get a good idea of sentence structure and pronunciation. However, if you are trying to learn some basic Japanese for a short-term trip, this is not the tape for you. You need to know how to ask for basic items (food, beverages, train tickets, the bathroom). I've travelled to Japan once, and plan to go again, and I don't think I'll need to know how to say "It's a big new car" or "Let's go to a concert" to a total stranger on the street. Buy this tape if you need some support for reglar Japanese lessons, or just want to generally improve your understanding of the language for business or regular travel. Nice set-up, but not practical for day-to-day needs.

This program is much more difficult than I expected, which pleases me. I had thought it would be something that I could learn in a week or two but I am finding that the authors were able to compress a lot of material on those five CDs. Highly recommended. Sionara...

This was great for me because I got to hear how words are pronounced by a native speaker instead of trying to figure out how to pronounce them on my own. If you have long commutes it's great, or put it on your ipod to listen to throughout the day.

I ordered Drive Time because I had also previously bought this program in German for long commutes to work. I listened to the Japanese CDs during our long moves across country, to my commutes to work, and even occasionally on runs or bike rides. When we arrived in Japan I knew enough to get by and the locals were very excited and thankful that I took the time to learn their language. Everything in this program is what is taught in the first few lessons of a Japanese class, so I was ahead of the game when I decided to brush up. It wont make you fluent, but it will definitely get you where you need to go in small conversations.

Grade 3-6?Plot summaries from 10 classical ballets, all of them major crowd-pleasers such as Swan Lake, Coppelia, and The Nutcracker. The most recent ballets covered are Romeo and Juliet, Petrouchka, and The Firebird. The reteller presents them as short stories complete with dialogue and thoughts. She does a credible job of briefly and accurately presenting the plots in a way that should hold the interest of readers who have no background on the subject. Barrett's handsome illustrations have a 19th-century, old-fashioned look. They include lots of period detail, and are done predominately in pastels, gold, orange, and dark blue. They look just like ballets in their detailed design and pretty colors. Louis Untermeyer's Tales from the Ballet (Golden Press, 1968; o.p.) covers more ballets (and more modern ones) with briefer plot summaries, while Jane Rosenberg's Dance Me a Story (Thames and Hudson, 1985; o.p.) describes the same ballets as McCaughrean, but in greater detail, and her book is aimed more at serious young dance students. If you're a dancer or regular ballet-goer, you're probably familiar with all the stories covered by this book; but if you don't know much about ballet, or have a child beginning ballet, this is a beautiful book to start with. It covers the most famous ballet stories, like The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, as well as many popular but not generally known ballets like Giselle. The illustrations are beautiful, so even if you're familiar with all the stories, if you're a ballet fan you may still want to add this to your collection. BTW, as soon as I can I'll add a list of all the stories told in this collection.

Pictures are quite nice, but not many. Would've liked a few more, but the stories seemed pretty good.

My daughter loves this book. She is 8 and read it cover-to-cover when it got here.

Kwall tackles a look at the interconnection between Jewish Law and culture and explores in depth how the two have fed off of each other to create the Judaism we all strive to preserve. The book is packed full of information and is not a quick read, but if you take the time to digest its content it is a very enlightening perspective on how the living and breathing entity we call Judaism has evolved. I thought each story was told well and the main characters well developed. I felt like I knew each of them. Their horrific experiences reminded me of how unprepared we really are to live in this world of nature. I learned some very valuable tips on survival in a very entertaining way. In my opinion, a good read.

"Lost in the Wild" is one of those books where you really want to see what happens next. Just one more chapter. Okay one more. It's an easy read that's hard to put down.The book follows the unfortunate misadventures of two different people who get lost in the woods. Two separate stories that take place in different places and different times. The book goes back and forth between the two, showing how each person got lost and what happened afterwards. The details are interesting, especially since I spend a lot of time in the backcountry myself, and the author does a great job of making us understand how perfectly capable people get into bad situations. Both stories are compelling and the reader gets to know not only those who are lost, but their companions, rescuers, families, etc. All in all it's an enjoyable book that keeps you turning pages to see what happens next.The only drawback is that, in hopping back and forth, sometimes one story can get confused with another, temporarily. Once both victims are lost, on foot, in similar environments, there are too many similarities to keep straight all the time. Maybe that's just me (and not a problem that others will have), but two stories farther apart or in different conditions might have been easier to separate.All in all a good book for anyone interested in adventure, exploration, or survival.

I highly recommend it for anyone going on a hike even if it is a "short day hike", which could easily turn into an unexpected accident or unprepared situation.That being said, while the stories are well written and give you the feeling of "being there and experiencing the traumatic situations", I found it a bit disconcerting to follow as the two stories flip-flopped back and forth with each chapter. A single story does have its own natural flipping....from the main character to either different ones or different places, but it is a bit more of a challenge in this book with two main different stories flipping. I do not fault the writer (as the writing was excellent, indeed) but moreso the editor that allowed the book to be put together in this fashion.Many people read one or two books at a time like I do, or have to put the book down after each chapter and find, that in this book, you have to almost go back and review what story you are following. This is my only criticism. Otherwise, a TOP notch book with great information for campers, hikers, and chairside adventurers.

What could possibly go wrong? A cautionary tale of heading into the woods.I loved how this book showed the myriad small decisions that created a dangerous situation. I know that "I couldn't put it down" is quite a book review cliche, but in this case, it's completely true. As a backpacker, this book made me realize many things that I could do differently to be safer each time I go on an adventure. For those who are "outdoorsy," or enjoy suspense, this is a good read. The author has done due diligence in researching the story, and tells it in a thorough, interesting, and unbiased manner.

They die of shame. At least they do according to Anthony Hopkins' character in "The Edge," they die of shame because they allowed themselves to end up in positions where they are lost and without resources. I read this engrossing tale in just a couple of sittings. What struck me most was that both men did what seemed to me to be very foolish things. Even a wilderness ignoramus like myself wouldn't wander into the woods alone without matches, an emergency blanket, some protection from the elements and some high calorie food. Even if it was only a few hundred yards. Even if it was only supposed to be for a few minutes. Read the book and shake your head at some of the things they did, especially the med student hiker who lost the trail and then left his tent and supplies and wandered away and lost those too. These are fascinating stories. I recommend this book.

I looked forward to reading from this book whenever I could. I enjoy wilderness survival stories and found this one to be well-researched and written. I haven't ever been to Northern Minnesota so the book taught me about the wilderness there and delivered a home run on the survival stories. The author did a good job of transitioning back and forth between two survival stories separated in time, but in the same general area. There were about 20 awkward words that caused me to pause and scratch my head as to the meaning . . . simpler words could have been used to make the sentences flow more smoothly. Lost in the Wild is a good book to read for anyone venturing out into the wilderness. There are some good lessons-learned from these characters. It is amazing how quickly you can get lost in the wild. If you like real outdoor adventure stories, you may also consider reading Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection. One of the things I like about this book is that the title, for once, is not overstated. "300 Great Baseball Cards of the 20th Century" does not profess to provide the 300 greatest cards and therefore provides exactly what the subtitle indicates, "A Historical Tribute by the Hobby's Most Relied Upon Source." Okay, so there is some promotion here since the book is compiled by Mike Payne and the staff of "Beckett Baseball Card Monthly."Of course you will find the most famous (and expensive) baseball cards of all time, such as the legendary 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner ($112,500-$225,000) and the 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle (not his first card, which would be the 1951 Bowman #253), which are the respective Holy Grails for the first and second half of the century. You will find cards for most of the greatest players in the history of the game, from Ty Cobb (1909-11 T206 Green Background) and Babe Ruth (1933 Goudey #43) to Mark McGwire (1985 Topps #401) and Barry Bonds (1987 Fleer #604). Not surprisingly, it is Mantle, in whose honor Topps has retired card number 7 in their sets, who has the most baseball cards with 21. Ruth and Ted Williams have 13 each, Willie Mays a dozen, and Hank Aaron 10. This book is beautiful. It is about family, about how you impart wisdom to the next generation, what it means to embrace America while holding on to your culture and tradition, all with lively humor and love. It is about three generations of a Mexican American family living in Southern California looking at their past, facing death, and still trying to make sense of this crazy mixed up world that is both magnificent and crushing.Many memorable novels have characters who leave a lasting impression. The protagonist Big Angel has an immense presence, yet he is willing to admit his frailties. Perhaps it is because he is looking death in the face. No matter, he is a man with a broad range that once you hear his voice and learn his secrets, you will never forget him. All the while, getting to know his family will be the most fun you have ever had without the drama of your own.Big Angel had me when he was looking for signs of his dearly departed mother or his son.“When he was a boy, Mother had taught him that a rainbow was a bridge where angels walked down from heaven. In Spanish, it was an arco iris. This was so much more lovely than English, like the name of a butterfly or hummingbird or daisy. He felt smug about this: go, Spanish! Sunflower: girasol, he thought.”I am deeply in love with the Spanish language, which I don’t speak. If you love the language, and for many other reasons, you are in for a real treat with THE HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS.

In his vivid multi-generational tale of a Mexican-American family, Luis Alberto Urrea offers up fallen angels (husbands, fathers, sons, brothers) and caregiving saints (wives, mothers, daughters, sisters). At times, I had trouble remembering the identities of third or even second generation characters, a confusion exacerbated by their multiple nicknames. And, even in context, the meaning of some Spanish expressions eluded me. Despite these gaps, I was drawn into the wild ride of life events and complicated relationships among the de la Cruz kin. Some are common to all extended families, others unique to a culture proud of itself yet shamed by a society that regards them as “less than” their white counterparts. Overall, the book has the zest, orneriness, kindness, rage, and spirit of a wild and crowded fiesta.

I really want just to say “Buy this book now and read it tonight”. Almost everything has been said about this wonderful novel, but let me add this: There are passages in which the language is so wonderful, you just want to cut it out of the page and chew it up. Don’t be discouraged by the death of the patriarch. This book will make you want to live bigger than you’re living right now.

This is a very good novel. The events happen now and take place over a few days, mostly in San Diego and Baja California. A huge Mexican- American family has encounters, comic and sad. You may want to look up a few words printed in Spanish, but only a few.There is food, sexual flirtation, insults, comedy, and a touch of modern references. If you have a stereotype of Mexican-Americans in your head, this will change it. There is enough variety to keep a reader pleasantly off-balance. I will read more of this writer.

The author may have included it simply as a respectful nod to the ancient art he has taken up—and that’s fitting: this is a novel very much about respect for what has come before.There are a lot of characters, and at first, I found it intimidating trying to keep up, but eventually, I just relaxed and let their stories wash over me. Clearly, the author is sympathetic to readers who might be a bit overwhelmed by the chaos. He does a good job of reminding you at intervals who these people are, and also reassures the reader that if you get confused at times, it’s okay: Even the characters themselves don’t always know if the guy that just walked in the door is a brother, cousin, uncle, nephew . . . or a complete stranger hoping to sneak in and snag a free cup of instant coffee in all the confusion.The reader, of course (at least this reader), feels like that stranger, at first. Every time I tried any other finance literature, I end up realizing Shreve's book is the only one that tell you all the truth. After analyzing some other alternatives out there, one should wonder whether all this math are necessary or not. Hull's and Wilmott's books give you a good amount of intuition and honest rules in order to avoid the fundamental theory behind stochastic calculus. Kerry Back and Thomas Mikosch, on the other hand, do not fear showing the math, but instead they give much more insight about the pricing theory without proving the most technical results. Finally, Shreve's books will tell you everything you need to know in order to master stochastic calculus. It's clear, very well written and cover every tiny subtle aspect underlying the theory. The only issue is: This is a Math book that frequently remembers it's solving finance problems, but it never forgets it's doing serious math.So, in my opinion, if you have strong knowledge in calculus and a good amount in probability, you should definitely try Shreve's books. Depending on your math background, it will hurt more or less. It hurt me a lot reading this book, but it is like any classical literature. The more you read, more you understand.And if you don't love math, books like Hull's will give you enough for your finance works.

I have a lot of these 'introductory' books, and this one (and its companion Volume I), are by far the best set of introductory books to mathematical finance i have come across. It contains everything you need to get an entry level position as a quant - meaning that you will pass interview tests i if you understand the contents of this book, the portion of the test about stochastic calculus at least - provided you do all the exercises, and also are able to reproduce some of these proofs (eg the barrier option and lookback options analytical formulas in the exotic options chapter). If you want to make absolutely sure to pass the interview tests (again that section of the test focusing on stochastic calculus and derivative pricing), you could also buy Joshi's books, which are slightly more focused on the finance. [as an aside, interview tests are likely to contain more than just derivative pricing and stochastic calculus, you will need other books to cover these aspects]

Although I work in a major global bank at a senior level I don't use stochastic calculus in my job. My maths and physics background goes back to the 1970s when stochastic calculus was not part of undergraduate studies. Indeed, one usually did stochastic theory at postgraduate level. I have memories of reading Halmos for measure theory, Feller for probability theory, Wiener and others. None of this was easy.Suffice it to say that there were a lot of abstract building blocks one had to erect first before one could actually do anything useful.Stochastic calculus is not easy. It is less intuitive than ordinary calculus. The vast majority of textbooks launch into a wall of definitions that seem divorced from the motivation for them. I am always suspicious of authors who do that. It's fine if you are writing for a very specialised audience but I am with Richard Feynman who reckoned that if you can't provide a simple explanation you don't really understand what is going on. In that context read his PhD thesis - it is most readable and understandable.What Shreve has done - and this is a significant achievement in my view - is to present something that is rigorous enough (and we all know that in this and other areas of mathematics one can go on and on with minute points of detail all in the name of rigour) yet grounds the concepts in something that is understandable.The simple pedagogical fact of life with this type of material is that there is a large overhead in getting to a particular point and Shreve had done a very good job in getting readers to a good standard without destroying their will to go on!When one looks at areas of mathematics with much longer pedigrees - and Fourier Theory is an example - there are some extremely good presentations of the theory at both mathematical and physical levels. Elias Stein, for instance, has done some marvellous work in the area. Stochastic calculus is really very young in terms of mainstream appeal. I can recall actuarial subjects I did in the early 1980s that had no stochastic calculus at all in them. All that has changed and I think Shreve's attempts in this area can be improved upon too but this will only happen over time.My colleagues in quant like Shreve's books so I guess that says something too.

Being a lover of mathematics, I found this book very enjoyable to read. Stochastic calculus is pretty much what it says: deriving, integrating, etc. over processes that are stochastic ("random") instead of deterministic. You will be surprised about how many properties of stochastic processes you can nail down as a precise deterministic number.I haven't tried to make money off the ideas in this book, so I can't speak for whether that would work. However, keep in mind that it doesn't really have trading ideas per se but rather lays the foundation for some mathematical models which could be incorporated in such.
