This a very good text for use in my Fundamentals of American Law class. Good for knowledge of the subject matter and for test/quiz review areas. Chapters divided into an outline form, which is the way I take my notes, and has just the right amount of information without getting overly wordy.I recommend this to any 100/200 level intro course professor.

This book gave me a good start to the Introduction of Law. It served it's purpose.

I bought this because it was the required text book for my son's introductory law class. I'm a lawyer myself so I couldn't help reading parts of it.Generally speaking, it does a very good job--I almost wish I had had such a book when I first started law many, many years ago. It does a good job of giving the big picture. Good set-off of definitions.My only critique is that this book is written at a pretty sophisticated level. Great if you are an upperclassman but some community college students may find the book challenging, especially if they are not adept at understanding intangible concepts.Overall, a good value for the money if you buy it used.

This homage to the dolorous military tune "Taps" is light on substance but heavy on sentiment. Schneider, a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge in WWII and author of the forthcoming children's book Zeek the Christmas Tree Mouse, begins with the history of the song, dispelling many myths along the way. On a balmy Virginia night in 1862, with Union and Confederate soldiers weary during the Seven Days Battles, Union general Daniel Butterfield ordered the brigade bugler, Private Oliver Willcox, to write a soothing tune to send the troops to sleep. The poignant tune quickly spread throughout the North and the South, and today it is played at many official funerals and is the last sound soldiers hear before extinguishing their lights. The pace slows when Schneider discusses the origins of the bugle, the national monuments where "Taps" can be heard (such as Arlington National Cemetery) and how the tune has been remembered in literature. Highlighted throughout, however, are many interesting pieces of Americana and sidebars of quotes from such personalities as Yogi Berra, himself a WWII veteran. Schneider also explores the evolution of the lyrics that have been set to the tune (one of the most popular being "Day is done,/ Gone the sun,/ From the hills, from the lake, from the skies") and interviews the bugler at President Kennedy's funeral, whose broken note was seen by the press as a "tear" and was repeated by other buglers for weeks afterwards. The book is truly a labor of love, and it's obvious. Schneider is to be commended for having once and for all related the history of "Taps," and debunking many myths about its origin. It is fortuitous that the author connected with Jari Villaneuva, an outstanding trumpeter, and the foremost authority on "Taps," living or dead. One minor flaw is an erroneous reference to an E-flat trumpet, near the end of the book. The book loses one star in this review because of the awful design, in which the text is interrupted again and again by sidebar stories. Editor: there had to be a better way to present this information!

This book gives us a handy reference to the origins of Taps. We need it, for, as well as the true story, here is also an exploration of the other, long told and beautifully poetic myth about the origins of the tune.One challenge for historians is this: who wrote the words that we most often sing (or think in our minds silently) to go with the music.... "Day is done...(etc.)" Even the authorities Schneider relies on don't have the answer. It goes back to Harrison's Landing and General Dan.

As a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam war, I have to say that Richard Schneider has written (composed from the heart, would be a better description) a wonderful little book about the most beautiful notes ever written. The book is not only a "feel-good" book for those for which "Taps" holds a special place in their hearts, it is also an informative book with historical elements and anecdotes to please the history minded reader. I especially liked the poems in the rear of the book that added to the poignancy of the theme. This book fills a certain void that occurred after 9/11 because even though the flag got a lot of attention, "Taps" deserves some attention also.

It is an excellent ethnograpic in which the author questions the modern ocidental values in human relations by demonstrating that money is a vital part in the realtions established nowadays. Moreover, the author shows that, unlike the negative value attributed to the money in affetive relation between men, the money is a strong positive component that transforms the subjectivities of the involved in these relations.

I visit the Dominican Republic regularly and have extended family there. Even with that connection, I still was not able to understand the background and motives of the so-called 'sanky panky' or the 'buggerones'. This book (which is a published doctoral dissertation) is a great read for anyone who is curious about the reasoning of those involved in the pleasure industry and want to know how this lifestyle came about. Although the book was written in 1999/2000, many of the places and activities are still relevant today. The writer goes into painstaking detail to explain the ethnograpic and historical context, complete with survey data and results, to give readers insight of those involved in the pleasure industry in the Dominican Republic. You will not be disappointed.

Most studies of sex tourism focus on female sex workers with foreign male clients. Even some studies look at men involved in sex work with foreign women. This book tries to fill in a gap by discussing Dominican men who sell sex to foreign male tourists. This book tries to break a rigid hetero/homo dichotomy by showing the many men who engage in hustling but with no desire for other males.There is a rare but excellent anthology called "Caribbean Masculinities" and the author's contribution is reprinted here. Really, I hope this book is a sign that the author got tenure somewhere. The info in this book is similar to another study about "pingueros" in Cuba. Those who saw the French-language film "Vers le Sur" may also enjoy this.The book NEVER mentions "the down-low" and this is understandable as the study takes place outside the United States. Nevertheless, for those interested in reading about Black men who get busy with men on the hush-hush, they'll want to read this book. The interviewees here never suggest that kicking it with men means they don't have women at home and desire women all the time. There's a lot of "don't ask, don't tell" here too. Relatives of these men don't question how men who are penniless on Friday afternoon can now pay the rent on Monday morning. There's also machismo here where women are conditioned not to question their male partners and these male sex workers can lie about getting with women when they are actually selling to men.Let me mention the most important comment to me in this book: "[The Zona Colonial] also stands as the most vivid symbol of what has been described as a kind of Dominican "hispanophilia"--an exaggerated identification with all things of Spanish origin, and a simultaneous denial (and repression) of the African cultural influences on contemporary Dominican society" (81). A whole mess of books and word-of-mouth mention how Dominicans go out of their ways to downplay or deny being Black. While the author brings this up only once, I really wish he would have spoken about race more. He dances around it as many people in that nation do. A student could write an awesome paper comparing this book and "What's Love Got to Do with It?" and they will note how the latter is explicit about Blackness when the former plays into the denial.Sometimes the book felt long-winded. However, this was not another anthropological text in which a writer just recalls, "First I did this, then I did that." This was an informative book about Black bisexuality in a transnational context.

After over 30 years in museums and often teaching on museums we finally have a readable yet complete text for students. Mark Walhimer covers all the essential themes for beginners in museum studies within a series of short and very readable chapters. Added materials and handouts are included for student use which helps students get connected to the profession. I appreciated the emphasis on mission and ethics expected from practitioners. I will use it for my next museum class. The content is very current yet the mission of our profession is clearly defended to a new practitioners.

Museums 101 is a great place to start for anyone interested in learning how museums operate. The book is well organized and methodical in its approach. It is easy to read, offering many examples that cover different types of museums, ranging from large to small, historical, visual, scientific and live. The book seems especially geared toward readers who intend to start new museums, and includes a reference section, Museum Toolbox. There is also a useful website associated with the book that allows the reader to explore chapter topics in greater depth.

I really love this book, and appreciate the depth of knowledge that the author Mark Walhimer put into it. Mr. Walhimer clearly is a devotee of the world of museums, putting in lots of website addresses and names of institutions with locations. The book is laid out very well by chapter and subject headings. It carefully covers important details. As I read the book, I felt as though the author was sitting nearby speaking to me because it's written in layman's easy-going terminology. For me, this book is one that needs to be read straight through, then gone over once or twice to allow for follow-up to all the suggestions and advice. Museums 101 is a textbook suitable for educating oneself and it's an upbeat manual, not boring at all. I actually couldn't put it down until I went through it cover to cover, and I'm now on the 3rd reading so as to utilize the links and look up websites listed inside.

I don't write reviews typically, but I purchased this book in Kindle form to use as a resource in setting up a nonprofit museum. I had an issue with accessing the accompanying online resources, and sent a email not expecting a response for at least a day or two. Much to my surprise, Mark himself emailed me back within a half hour and made sure everything was accessible for me! A+ for customer service! Overall the book is a great read and a valuable resource and I would definitely recommend it!

I recently have been incredibly inspired to start a museum. Of all of the materials I have found in my online and book research, Mark’s book has absolutely been the most helpful in terms of giving me specific things to work on in creating my museum. He also gives a great background of the workings of a museum, the behind the scenes of successful museums. I highly recommend this book for any and all interested in learning more about museums!

Running a specialised museum in regional Australia, we use books and online resources as our main source of information and inspiration. Museum's 101 gave us both. It is divided into small, easy to read chunks of valuable information. Being written by an author on the other side of the world we wondered if it would have enough relevance to us, but our Custodian has been a subscriber to Mark's blog for some years now and found it valuable, so we gave it a go. We find it practical, very readable and very useful.We now recommend this book to our colleagues, and would also highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Museum sector.

this book came apart once I got it owner did not disclose that in the notes. It was a waste of money

I am a Professor at Valparaiso University and will be adopting Sports Media as the new textbook for our Sports Journalism class. Many people think of a Sports Journalism class as an easy A or a blowoff class and this book helps dispel those notions right off the bat. Former textbooks we've used were almost cartoonish and went along with the aforementioned perceptions.In Sports Media, Schultz makes it a point to educate without fluff. Absent from this book are long biographies about famous sports broadcasters that can be found on the Internet, and it it's place is dedication to the Internet itself as a sports medium.The first chapters discuss Reporting and the difference in how to do it between Print and Broadcast as well as the Internet. Then the book goes into the Visualizaton of sports. Most anchors that start out in small markets will be shooting their own stories as well as editing them and the book discusses techniques and includes a CD-ROM.Other important topics covered that other texts have not are the Ethics of reporting, the Economics and how to work with Media Relations.The final chapter could be the most important as it discusses how to get a job. This is the goal for college students and the text provides excellent advice.I recommend the book for Professors as well as anyone who wants a better knowledge in not just sports broadcasting, but all parts of sports media.
