I wish I had had this book available 30 or so years ago, when I was wrestling with my mother's nastiness and what my acceptance of it was modeling for my daughter. My instincts did help- but it would have been very supportive to have had the information and perspectives in this book at the time!Most, close to all mothers, do the best they can. Some do not, and for some, the "best they can" is utterly inadequate. This book addresses the daughters of such mothers with both perspective and ways to cope with the reality of our lives- from effectively setting boundaries up through "divorcing" her if nothing else works.Highly recommended for daughters of unloving mothers.

I always seem to be a good candidate for Susan's books. I've read Emotional Blackmail, Toxic In-Laws, and I've already had the chance to skim over Toxic Parents. I was so impatient for this book: Mothers Who Can't Love to come out. How thoroughly relieving that someone dares to challenge the world's greatest taboo: Unloving Mothers. I was born to a woman who should have never been allowed to be a mother. Since cutting off my ties with my mother, I have been urged to reconcile and have been criticized with every line possible. I've heard the "she gave you life" and "honour thy mother". I've been told to try to understand her because of lack of education. I've been told to suck it up because everyone knew how she was. Susan lists all these cliches. The queen mother of all criticism and threats is: "I hope when you have kids, they will not do this to you." Susan understands how hard it is to come to terms with not having a loving mother and how it's even harder to defend your decision from the innumerable people who do not accept it.The first part of her book addresses the many faces of an unloving mother. Mine was the narcissistic mother. Sometimes she could be downright psychotic and abusive. For me however when you have been hit enough, it's only a sheer irritation that my mother thought she could scare me with a belt. Susan gave me such clarity and validation with this section. I was always so confused as to why my mother could occasionally be loving and why everything went down the drain when I found my soulmate. These kinds of mothers don't mind you as long as you do what she wants you to do, as long as she has control over you, and most of all-- as long as you don't become a woman. I no longer feel threatened when my relatives try to remind me of the good times I had with my mother. In a lot of ways, I was no more than a piece of property to her. I was deprived and pruned so that I could one day be given away like property then people would see how amazing and strict she was. Thus, she would gain other people's fear and respect. That was her ambition all along and it didn't sit well with her that I refused to be treated like a trophy. My world came crashing down when I realized her need for fear and respect from a bunch of faceless people meant more to her than my life and happiness. She had no qualms about trying to break me, thinking I would eventually capitulate. Like many unloving mothers, she wreaked havoc on my conscience. I felt horrible for not obeying her commands. I felt so guilty whenever she reminded me of all she did for me. Like many daughters of unloving mothers, you break in another way be it physical illness or in my case: depression.This book also made me aware of how every experience with an unloving mother will mold the way you go through life. I've been on the receiving end of my mother saying: "I wish you were never born" and "You should have died a long time ago"-- all in the same breath. However, her destruction did not start when I fell from grace. The tendency to feel responsible for other people's happiness, feeling guilty if you don't comply with other people's wishes, and chasing approval all steams from how your mother raised you. It was such a shock for me to read that love does not have to be earned. I still remember my bridesmaids' speech during my wedding. They called me loving. They said they loved me. I was speechless and felt that I didn't deserve it. Sure I love my husband but I never expected much of it back. How bizarre it was for me when he was always there for me and took care of me without a second thought. How bizarre it was for me when a friend pointed out that my husband loves me more than how other husbands love their wives.All of these scars and self-punishment were from the way my mother programmed me from birth. No, I will never have a loving mother but that is okay. The notion of the Loving Mother is bade farewell in Susan's book. I learned to say that it's okay. Moreover, I can be a loving mother to myself. And just because I never received the nurture I needed, it doesn't mean that I can't be a loving mother when I have children.Most importantly, my rights are spelled out. I no longer need to feel guilty. It was my right to live my life the way I wanted. It is MY choice whether I want to have my mother in my life. If I am ever urged or criticized again to have my mother in my life, that person will be on the receiving end of some very good non-defensive communication.

My wife’s mother tortures her with her self-centeredness and dependency; however, it is difficult for us to disentangle ourselves from her web of lies, partly because we encounter resistance from family members (wife’s 3 older sisters) who refuse to acknowledge that a mother can have flaws. They prefer to praise the unloving mother, because they desperately yearn for the love that she is incapable of giving, so much so that they are blind to her failure.Dr. Forward’s book cuts through the nonsense that is the notion of the perfect mother and shines a light on the painful cycle of guilt and acquiescence experienced by unloved daughters, a cycle with which I have become sadly familiar.Ladies, Dr. Forward is on your side. We men need more strong voices like Dr. Forward out there advocating for daughters.

I think this book is helpful for learning the different types of abusers, developing some coping strategies, and for moving forward with your life in a healthier way. My mother fit almost every category in the book and the abuse she and my father inflicted on myself and my siblings caused long-standing problems for all of us. Her abusive behavior continued well into my adult years,and I tolerated it, not knowing any better, until I became physically ill and was hospitalized. That was when I first learned she was abusive and I was allowing it to go on! Needless to say, she hasn't been a part of my life for many years now, but the damage was already done. I have been in counseling, have attended al-anon meetings, and have read numerous self-help books, including other books by Dr. Forward. I find her style of writing is easy for me to read and understand and I like her use of personal case stories. There are so many times I read what has happened to someone else and can completely relate because the same thing happened to me! Her suggestions on how to deal with the pain and grief of specific incidents were very helpful. This book was not easy for me to get through because of the emotions some of the exercises unleashed. It took me over 6 months to finish it, but when I did, I felt that I finally had a handle on what had happened to me, both in understanding the whys, and discovering ways to work through the emotional pain. It's been almost as long since I finished the book. I wish I could say that was the end of it, but I don't think you can ever get past that kind of treatment completely. It seems to rear its ugly head at the times you least expect it. At least now I have some tools to put it back in its place.

Like many, my relationship with Dark Souls started a bit rough. I wasn't quite sure I wanted to continue on with such an abusive relationship. But then, all of a sudden, there was a brief serenity and calmness in all the death and stun-locking that taught me the value of the experience. If you work hard enough, you'll reap the ultimate reward: experiencing that majesty that is Dark Souls. It was at that point that my liking became an obsession. To this day, if I pick up the game I have to know that it will be a while before I put it down again, just for a breather and perhaps a swig of estus.In fact, my obsession was so real that I had the original Japanese Dark Souls: Design Works imported from Japan less than a year ago. I knew that I had no chance in deciphering the vast text in the interview section but, for me, the art alone was worth the premium. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we North Americans would be intentionally treated to such a great work of art. Then, the wonderful people at Udon Entertainment made a dream come true with their announcement of an English translation of Dark Souls: Design Works.After the long and eager wait that comes with pre-ordering an item months ahead of its release, it finally arrived at my doorstep. I was immediately greeted by the grandiose facade, very fitting for Dark Souls, that is its cover. The slipcover is a matte metallic silver stock with a sandpaper texture. The black title plate planted atop it is contrastingly glossy and smooth. On that back is a deeply implanted silver sword silhouette. But the real beauty comes when you remove the luxurious slipcover and reveal the ash black hardcover with text and ornaments as orange as a raging bonfire.As if the presentation was not enough to warrant five stars, inside this tome you will find nothing but the most stunning content.Chapter 1: Concept ArtThe first 30 pages feature no words - solely massive, sprawling concept art on every page, all featured on glossy black stock. I spent a good minute at least on each page, just admiring the beauty and quality of each work.Chapter 2: Design MaterialsThe following 80 pages are broken up into sections, each visually describing the design process of various elements and showing insight into the design of World Materials, NPC Materials, Boss Monster Materials, Monster Materials, Player Equipment Materials, Weapon Materials, Unused Materials (very interesting!), and a brief look at the First Edition Purchase Bonus Poster Materials from the collector's edition release of the game.Chapter 3: InterviewsThis section is undoubtedly what I looked forward to most. Having held onto the Japanese edition for so long with no hopes of gaining insight into the thought process of the masterminds who crafted the masochistic symphony that is Dark Souls, I couldn't help but skip first to the twelve-page interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki, Daisuke Satake, Hiroshi Nakamura, Masamori Waragai, and Mai Hastuyama. It was everything I could have hoped for. Their insight is breathtaking and inspiring and truly something I don't wish to spoil to any readers, but these twelve pages alone were worth the $30 purchase price.I really cannot say enough to try and convince onlookers to purchase this, but please do it. Not only will you treat yourself to something truly unique and amazing, but you will be convincing Udon Entertainment to continue their great practice of bringing English translations of beautiful Japanese books to the west.

 The English translated edition of the Dark Souls artbook ダークソウルデザインワークズ is finally out. It's another good job at translating by publisher Udon.The book's still hardcover, 128 pages. The cover is nicer. I like the sandy texture and the cover design is somehow printed over it in high gloss.Since I've already reviewed the Japanese artbook. The review that follows is roughly similar with minor changes.This artbook collects the concept art for characters, enemies, background, weapons and items.There are two chapters, one on concept art and the other on early designs. The chapters are not necessary because they are all concept art. In fact, the organization of content is a bit chaotic. Take the weapons section for example. They are not strictly grouped by type. There are axes together with broad swords, spears with shields, etc. Same thing with the characters and enemies.The concept art featured are nice but with a slightly rough art style. I would have preferred a more finished look especially for the environment art. They are printed quite small because they don't have enough detail to go big, or too unfinished. The designs are great but somehow they don't have the same forbidding feeling you get when playing the game. The Dark Souls world is quite big and I'm surprised they didn't include more environment art.I love the character designs for this game. The enemies are incredibly scary. There are lots of enemies featured. It's good that some have included many design variations, but many also come with just one design by itself. There aren't any 3D renders.The weapon designs are interesting, but I felt that not all weapons are included. I've the game guide and there are a lot of weapons not included here.The last few pages are interviews with the designers of the game. The book makes more sense to me now that I can understand the captions. One of the highlights would of course be the interviews with the creators Hidetaka Miyazaki, Daisuke Satake, Hiroshi Nakamura, Masanori Waragai and Mai Hastuyama.This book is a bit underwhelming for me. Maybe it's because of the rough style of art (but hey, it's concept art), or because there aren't as much environment art which I was really looking forward to.Anyway, it's still a very fine video game art book, especially if you're into the mythical-knight-armor-castles-monsters fantasy art.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. I love Dark Souls - something about the world felt very creepy and real to me in spite of the dragons and skeleton dudes. It's a similar feeling to when I played Super Metroid. The isolation and fear, the excitement of exploring. Dark Souls really captures loneliness and hopelessness. One of the key components to its success is the way the game looks. It's not super graphics intensive, but the monsters are horrible and terrifying, and the locales are stark and sort of empty and bleak.Design Works sets out to capture the bleak and terrifying world of Dark Souls. This hardcover book is page after page of high quality prints of the concept art used to create one of my favorite games from the last generation of consoles. The book itself is super nice with heavy pages, a shiny gloss, and neat descriptions of the pictures. My only complaint is that I wish it had more, but honestly for the price it's great. Definitely worth picking up if you enjoyed the world of Dark Souls as much as its tough gameplay.

A really wonderful addition to any Dark Souls collection. I purchased this book a few years ago in Japanese, and it is nice to have an English copy as well. Nicely printed, glossy cover (although, I do think the Japanese edition is a tad nicer). Overall, a great book with nice illustrations, interviews with members of the development team (From Software). If you enjoy Dark Souls, you will enjoy this book.

Currently there are no reviews of this book, so I'm just going to share a few brief details that may encourage other interested fans who are unsure about this purchase.If you're reading this I'm going to assume you're already familiar with "Cathy" -- I think Cathy was released when I was in high school & just discovering the music of Kate Bush. I certainly couldn't afford it then, and I can hardly justify buying a first printing of it now. Luckily, it was reprinted last year, so fans were finally able to afford -- well, what amounts to the Holy Grail as far as Kate collectibles go. This book serves as a continuation of the first -- only much more monumental material-wise.I wasn't too sure what to expect from this book -- I suspected more commentary on Kate's career and possibly her concert last year. But this book is largely photos, most of which (probably 70-80%) I have never seen before. Maybe I'm not as thorough as some fans, but there was A LOT of new material here for me to marvel over. Kate's brother was obviously on set for most of the video shoots, and there are plenty of album cover test shots as well. Some of my favorite pictures in this book are the test shoots for the Hounds Of Love album cover -- I couldn't help but smile.John Carder Bush does offer some commentary here and there, but it's not per photo as it is with "Cathy". As usual, his insights are delightful.If there's anything for me to complain about here, it's the binding. It seems loose -- although it's entirely possible that it's loose to make it easy to open & lay flat. So -- no reason to knock off a star. The book is very well constructed, although it does not come shrink-wrapped and may get scuffed during shipping."Kate" is well worth the asking price for fans.

Ahhh. Kate. I read every word of this visually stunning book, in a few hours. And now have sitting on a book display on my media cabinet.

A very thorough book that offers information on a wealth of creatures that are not often referred to otherwise. It is dated (1999, I believe) but still is very informative and the author went to great lengths to research the subjects. I recommend this book to anyone as an Encyclopedia to the Crypto world - It does not go into a huge depth to any particular animal (I think Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster have the most pages dedicated to each subject - around 3 or 4) but gives general information on each.

perhaps this was helpful for research when it first came out, but it is cursory and is missing far too many alleged species that I had to research for my anthology; see AuthorDan (dot) com. It was a partial help, though, in providing some research sources and helping with my checklist of cryptids.

I have not read the book start to finish but have been using for reference work. The sections on each Cryptid are very thoroughly researched, like the rest of Mr. Coleman's works, making for an informative and interesting read. I wish I had ordered the print version, as I got it digitally to use on an electronic reading device.

3 stars is kind because I respect Loren Coleman as a researcher, but self-indulgence is always boring. Probably one third of this book is about cryptozoologists. That is not why anyone would buy this book. So pages for some obscure friend and a paragraph for many creatures. Not exhaustive either. Disappointing.

This book is okay, but it's out of date with the most recent reality TV stuff. It could also use more creature descriptions and fewer biographical sketches of monster-hunters.

Great reference, through and detailed, a must have for anyone's collection

True descriptions of legends and the people that discovered them. Keeps the reader intrigued , hard to put the book down.

While this book does mention some mythological beings, the existance of a majority of creatures discussed is at least plausible, and there is sufficient evidence to suggest that many may represent animals truly unknown to science.Along with descriptions, some sighting reports, experiences, and discussion of evidence of unknown creatures, this book presents all animals once thought extinct, elusive, and subsequently proven to exist, or rediscovered. As in the case of the famous Coelacanth, a prehistoric fish thought extinct since the Cretaceous Period but found very much alive in 1938.Cryptozoology A-Z also sheds light on cases of misidentification and includes many profiles of people involved with Cryptozoololgical studies.I highly recommend this book for those who wish to learn more about Cryptozoology, the many interesting, monsterous, and bizarre creatures there are, or might be, in our world, and the people who search for them.

For that, Steinke’s book is priceless.The Good: This book was great – fun to read, immensely practical, convicting and encouraging. I can’t recommend it highly enough – especially to those in ministry. I especially liked the “7 Responses to Promote Health: Self not others, strength not weakness; process not content; challenge not comfort, integrity not unity; system not symptom; direction not condition.” OK, you need definitions to apply, but trust me they are good.I also was helped by the idea of Triangles. “When A is at odds with B, the most anxious of the pair introduces C (third party) to reduce anxiety between A and B. For example, God confronts Adam about his disobedience. Anxious Adam shifts the burden to Eve. When she encounters God, Eve blames the snake.” So glad I’ve never done that.And my favorite quote: “Anxiety creates its own disaster.” Gregory Bateson.The Bad: The first half is more theoretical; the second half has more stories to illustrate the truths. And graphs. So, the second half is way more interesting. The bad thing is, you can’t really understand the second half without reading through from the beginning. Trust me on this one. To Steinke’s credit, even the first half is a good read.The Ugly: I’ve been in church work for about 30 years, and now this book comes out. I’d have handled a lot of ugly in a more redemption fashion, had Steinke written this and I applied it sooner. So, it’s all Steinke’s fault. It would seem more logical to have either written two separate books: one about systems and systematic thinking in the Church, and the other about anxiety in the Church. The way it is designed there is just not enough information given to fully understand systems and systematic thinking.• This book does contain the author’s personal opinion as to certain denominations belonging to the Church that many would disagree with; though to some it may be seen as a benefit, to others it may be a hindrance. Either way, the information contained in this book is invaluable to the Church, regardless of denominational background.Benefits• The author starts out by spending a chapter discussing what systems are. Though it is only a crash course on systems, it is a good primer to systematic thinking.• The author provides an in-depth study on anxiety in general and in the Church.• Throughout the book the author provides many useful illustrations and graphs to help the reader picture and understand this very complicated subject.• Though this subject is complicated, this book covers systems and the issue of anxiety in a way that the average reader can understand and apply.Academic SettingBecause of its length and disproportional design, this book is not recommended for a systems or pastoral class, but rather a counseling class. For about the first half of the journal, the left page’s dots are almost invisible on the left half of the page. I imagine this is a printing error and I’m very disappointed by that :(The first couple of pages are printed with bullet journal tips. I could really do without that. It’s unnecessary and I want my entire journal to be customized by me. Plus if you just needed a grid notebook for something other than a bullet journal, this one has a couple of pages of explicitly bullet-journal related things and has “bullet grid journal” printed on the spine.Also, it’s definitely worth noting that these pages are a bit on the thin side, and the dots on the front and backs of a single page DO NOT line up. So if you make a line on one side, you will be able to see on the other side that your lines are slightly off-set from each other. This can be very annoying.It’s a soft, matte texture cover, NOT hardcover or even like a spiral notebook. It will bend and scuff up if you’re rough with it, but mine doesn’t get a lot of abuse so it’s fine. Just choose your journal wisely. I like that the squares are just 5mm, a bit smaller than I’m used to. I can cram in more stuff.Honestly I would love this journal if only the dots weren’t so faint on the left side. I feel that deserves a replacement, but I bought this to start the new year with, so I don’t feel like I have time to get another one. Plus it may still have the same light dot issue anyway.

Really disappointed. Received this notebook and took it out of the box and the front cover and the first 20 pages are bent! And not just a little, a large crease!

I LOVE this cover!! It is so me! But, for the actual pages, I was not impressed. The pages were starting to rip out at the back almost immediately. And I know some people won't care, but the dots are NOT aligned on front and back of the pages. This can be an issue if you are doing the same layout on the front and back (as in a Bullet Journal). The last part I was unhappy with was that you cannot make it lay flat. You can put another book or hard surface under it, and "fake it", but it DOES NOT lay flat. I wanted to love this. The cover spoke to me. But overall, I was disappointed. I recently purchased the Artist Loft Dotted Grid Journal from Michael's, for $5!! I love it. I highly recommend it over this journal, despite the epic unicorn.

Good size. The cover is a weird texture, matte and gets greasy fast. The paper is thin and dots could be a little darker. Otherwise I like it, especially the cover.

This is a cheaply made journal. The paper cover is not much thicker than the pages themselves, and mine was delivered with a big crease down the front cover as if it were bent in half prior to shipping. It won't survive being tossed in a backpack. The only reason I am not returning it is because the picture on the cover cracks me up, and this is my first attempt at journaling so I won't be heartbroken if I throw it in the trash later.

Only reason I wont give 5 stars is because the pages bleed if you use markers - which is pretty common among bullet journals. i love it though.

This is my current bullet journal, and it has held up so well to all the daily abuse. It is good quality, unlined with dots, and perfectly suited for journaling. It has also received a lot of comments as I've toted it around town. It's slightly bigger than some of my other bullet journals, and does not fit in a purse, but I still love it.

Love this - cover makes me laugh and inside helps me organize! Great product!

Just arrived in Tunis hoping that this book would get me through my week in Tunisia. For the past 48 hours, it has proven incredibly unhelpful and I just ordered the Lonely Planet guide via download PDF instead because I am desperate. This entire book does not even have a decent map of Tunis, leaving it completely up to me to figure out how to get from place to place. And, yet, it recommends that we walk to sites rather than taking a taxi. Additionally, the book does not make it clear what is the most interesting sites and the moderately interesting sites. After reading the book in an hour, I was not able to decipher which were the 2-3 must see sites. Although the book has pictures and a decent amount of background information, it is not a practical guide and certainly cannot be your only guide in the country. Buy this book if you never plan to travel to Tunisia and, instead, just want to learn about the country. Buy the Lonely Planet guide (or the Tunisia chapter of the Africa book) if you want practical information.

Very good guide with nice photos. Unfortunately out of date at 2005.

ok, but a bit out of date

Just came back from two weeks in Tunisia. As we had to go to Europe, we decided within a week to go to Tunisia and the only place I could get the book was from Amazon, but we were scare not to have it on time. We went all over Tunisia with OAT Travel. I showed the guide others places which were in the book and from that he detoured when he could do it. Without the book we will had missed a lot. As we travel a lot we have at least 27 books from DK Eyewitness Travel which we went to all those countries. Most of my books I use a marker to spot easier the places to see. We do not have too many places to see in the world, but I will never leave without those books. The Planet Books are very good too for places to eat and sleep.

Great intro to the culture of Tunisia and starting point for further research.

The DK Eyewitness Guide served as a wonderful resource during my recent trip to Tunisia. The photography was beautiful, The historical and cultural explanations were often more complete than that offered by my paid guide. It is easy to use and invaluable to anyone visiting. I'd highly recommend it.

A very informative guidebook!

As it is the case with all DK travel guides, this is a very hands on guide, with sightseeing routes to be followed and pics to give the reader an idea of what to see...
