Walter Foster books are the "Readers' Digest" of painting instruction which is both a strength and a weakness; a weakness because of the brevity of material and a strength for the very same reason. While each volume in the "Artist Library Series" is only about 50 to 60 pages they tend to offer the beginning painter more of what they need than do the more erudite offerings from Watson-Guptill, Dover or North Light.Each Walter Foster volume is authored by a working artist and offers technique relative to the specific title, a section on materials and a series of "lessons" in the form of demonstrations, which is the meat of each book. The books are credited as being for "beginning/intermediate" painters, but realistically they're really for beginners that have learned how to mix colors on their palette and have mastered the basics of applying paint to the support surface. What these students or aspiring painters need most is to paint simple projects repeatedly to acquire both competence and confidence. They don't need argumentative and conflicting information about what brand of oil paint is the "best" or why you must have a specific color on your palette. All of this nonsense is what makes up the bulk of way too many oil painting instruction books and, in my opinion, serves no good purpose for anyone still learning the basics.This particular volume by William F. Powell is devoted to painting knife techniques, has a significant number of demonstrations in creating landscape elements and ends with 4 demos utilizing those techniques. It's not an exhaustion of the subject (no Walter Foster book is) but it does allow the reader/painter to develop skills with a variety of knives and I suspect each painter will come out the other end of this book feeling like they really learned how to do something, instead of just knowing more about what they don't know. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Bill Creevy's "The Oil Painting Book" which is dated but does have a section on palette knife technique. This is a style of painting that isn't well covered in the literature and while this book may not be all inclusive it at least provides a credible review of the specialty and offers the student painter a lot of options to explore more on their own.For a brief background on Walter Foster see my review of Plein Air Painting in Oil (Artist's Library Series), a companion to this book.

I bought this for a friend who wants to begin oil painting. It's a very easy-to-read, easy-to-follow introduction into knife painting, but the best part is that it can be a useful resource for any kind of painting instrument. The pictures are pretty and pair well with the tutorials; the book is straightforward and simple.I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to start oil painting, especially for those who want to stray from the traditional paintbrush.

This book was very small and hard for me to read. There wen’t many pictures.The author is well known and fespected. The book was just not for me.

A quick read-through convinced me this is a book to take in nibbles, putting into practice all the practical advise it contains.

A good clean copy, almost like new. His instruction is clear and to the point, he doesn't get emotional about it or have cute names for his knives. Painting tends to be a learn by doing and palette knife painting seems to be especially so. Maybe that's why there aren't very many books about it, it's just something you learn by doing it. Having said that this is a very good book and gets you right into the practical application of the craft.

This is a great book for beginners(especially painting knives), the textures it presents are used in a lot of paintings. The book has very good examples of rocks, mountains, and water all things that need to have a textural component that can be difficult to achieve with knife painting. I prefer knife painting and this book has been a great resource to me.

Lisa Pease, a lifelong information activist, became a researcher while trying to win arguments on the Internet about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. My two cents, so far:I have been looking forward to the release of this book because I have been a fan of Lisa Pease's work for many years. However, while just browsing around the book before I read it from start to finish, I have come across two inexplicable errors. She has Jesse Unruh sitting in the back seat of the patrol car with Sirhan when he was transported to Rampart station (pg 23). Among all the LAPD files, FBI files, Grand Jury and trial testimony, and the numerous books and articles written about this event, I have not seen one account which puts Jesse Unruh in the back seat. This is not a trivial error. The details of the transport of Sirhan from the Ambassador Hotel to Rampart station were important enough to warrant the prosecution calling three witnesses at trial to cover it.She also repeatedly relies upon the statements of alleged witness, Marcus McBroom. It can be easily demonstrated that McBroom is a liar, having made repeated false statements. If McBroom's statements were true, then he would be a very important witness, so it is essential for anyone doing in-depth research on this event to check out McBroom's claims. If one does that, it becomes clear McBroom is not being truthful.*** EDIT 01/19/19: I will eventually post some thoughts in a comment to this review about the author’s treatment of Marcus McBroom (see comment 36). This is a serious error that raises questions about her investigative process. It incorporates flawed analysis, poor judgment, and at the very least, a biased presentation of the evidence, if not a deliberate attempt to deceive readers. Marcus McBroom is a liar, he is not credible, period. I challenge anyone to make a case to the contrary - it cannot be done. The case Lisa Pease tries to make has internal contradictions which she either ignores or cannot see, and omissions which could only have been deliberate. That being the case, one has to ask where else has she made such errors in this book? *** End of EDIT*** EDIT 01/16/19: A third error I want to point out is the author has Kennedy’s “unofficial bodyguard” waiting “stage right” as Kennedy finishes speaking to the crowd in the Embassy ballroom. I know of no evidence to support that assertion. All of the trial testimony I have seen and at least two broadcast news cameras have the bodyguard, Bill Barry, stage left. Since Lisa Pease is a writer of screenplays, I must assume she knows the meaning of “stage left” and “stage right” and uses those terms carefully to make it clear to which side of the stage she refers. Since there was a last minute change of plan regarding where Senator Kennedy would go after finishing his speech, and this change led him directly to the assassin (ambush), it is basic investigative practice to ascertain the details of who made the change and why, and where were Kennedy’s security people before and after. Again, in my view this is an important detail. *** End of EDIT*** EDIT 1/27/19: Unfortunately, the more I read, the more problems I find in this book. Lisa Pease relies heavily on eyewitness interviews and testimony to support her narrative. The eyewitness evidence in this case is difficult to sort out because there is a lot of it and it is rife with problems. In many cases, interrogators did an inadequate job of asking questions needed to clarify important details. There is also considerable contradictory testimony among witnesses, even some who were in the same place at the same time. Many witnesses’ stories changed over time, and there is substantial evidence that witnesses’ accounts were influenced by other witnesses and media reports. I am finding that Lisa Pease has provided misleading representations of some eyewitness accounts by including testimony that fits her agenda and leaving out that which does not. I am going to have to put the details in the comments to this thread otherwise this review is going to get way too long (if it isn’t already). Witnesses, George Green and Booker Griffin, are two more examples of the author's deliberate attempt to deceive her readers. (See comments 37 and 38) *** End of EDITHow does Lisa Pease research the RFK assassination for decades and make such errors? For me, this creates the problem of no longer being able to trust Lisa. I am now going to have to vet everything in this book that I have not already researched in detail. I was hoping just to sit back and let Lisa do all the work for me. Oh well, not the first, nor will it be the last, time I have found myself in this position.I have no doubt I will learn something from this book, and clearly Lisa Pease has done some excellent work in the past. But I am disappointed and puzzled to see such fundamental errors from Lisa Pease on this subject. It may be that this subject is just too much for one person to cover in a single volume. I may update/edit this commentary as I read the chapters in order.First edit to my original post (above):In the comments to this review, I have been accused of attacking and discrediting both the book and its author. Why? Because I pointed out two errors in the book, one of which the author had to concede after I provided documentation to confirm it. I was also accused of having an agenda, and it was suggested I was a rival author hiding behind an alias. All this because I dared to challenge the author. I will respond to all that in the comments thread. For now, I just want to add a couple points.First, if you have an interest in the RFK assassination, I recommend you read this book because Lisa Pease is without question an important researcher of this event. However, I am cautioning any reader against simply accepting as fact everything she has in the book without scrutiny. My warning should not be controversial, people should employ such an approach generally. In this country, at this time, we can longer be uncritical consumers of information, there is too much at stake. This requires we not only scrutinize information which does not conform with our opinions, but also that which seems to be aligned with our opinions. No author's work should receive blind acceptance from readers. If one does not have time to do independent investigation, then one can at least read multiple authors on a subject in order to get as complete and accurate an understanding as possible.Second, my "agenda" and purpose for reading and reviewing this book is nothing more than truth and justice. In my opinion, this requires careful and thorough investigation. I make no apology for scrutinizing and challenging this or any other author. I have all the important books on the RFK assassination and I have done considerable independent investigation of primary sources, including documents acquired through FOIA requests. Based on all I have seen, read and examined, I do not believe Sirhan killed RFK. As I make my way through this book, I’m sure I will encounter material I want to investigate myself. So my progress will be slow and deliberative. I hope to be back from time to time to edit or update this review, and will likely be responding to comments in the comment thread.FYI: In order to make it easier to follow my responses to comments, I have edited all my comments as of 12/30/18 to include the comment to which I responded. However, I have not edited the content of my responses, I have simply pasted in the comment to which I responded. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted my first comment, in which I replied to the author's first comment. In that comment, I merely pointed out that I never said Jesse Unruh was not in the patrol car. Her error was claiming Unruh jumped into back seat of the patrol with the suspect.

Lisa Pease in meticulous fashion examines all the witness statements, the ballistic evidence, the coroner's report and the acoustic documentation of this seminal event that ended the idealism and hope of the 1960s. She in essence pierces the veil of deception that former Counter Intelligence Chief James Jesus Angelton called the "wilderness of mirrors" in which no event is what it appears to be when describing how intelligence operations work. Once I started reading this murder mystery, I could not put the book down. I could not wait for the author to reveal how the "magic trick" that has fooled so many over the decades and has contributed to the perpetuation of this lie that Sirhan committed this heinous act. In fact, she proves that not only did he not kill Robert Kennedy but in fact was just as much a victim as RFK. Her explanation about what happened in the pantry that night is not only compelling but is clearly supported by the evidence, new and old, as well as the comments made by intelligence agents . If you are going to read one book on the RFK assassination, this is the book.

Before I tender my review: page 247 needs a correction; Where it says Kennedy and Johnson it should say Kennedy and Connally.I’ve been reading books on the JFK, MLK, and RFK assassinations for 42 years. Every 10 or so years a book is released that grabs you and collapses you into its content——so that you can’t get out until you’ve finished. One such book was Inside The ARRB (2009). A Lie Too Big To Fail absolutely fell into this category for me. On my shelf there are past reads on the RFK assassination by Turner and Christian, Klaber, Melanson, O’Sullivan, and Tate & Johnson, among a few others. Pease builds on past research, and adds volumes of her own to add many new pieces to the puzzle——which, thanks to her, is now much closer to being complete.The book contains a massive reconstruction of the shooting, complete with shooter locations, descriptions of the shooters and handlers, and a lot of detail about the immediate aftermath. Pease also believes that if, instead of heading through the pantry RFK had gone to the Ambassador room, there was another team of assassins, as well as a second patsy, at that location as well. Her evidence (primarily eyewitnesses) also leads to the conclusion that Sirhan was likely shooting blanks.My constructive suggestion for the second edition is to create a detailed diagram of the pantry with all victims and their locations. Then, considering the trajectories that caused the wounds, construct trajectory cones to postulate more exact locations of the shooters. This was the method used by Sherry Feister in Enemy of the Truth, to arrive at the shooter location for the JFK head shot.I am intrigued by Pease’s commentary that the RFK head shot may have been 2 shots to the same location (just behind the right ear). At the 2018 Wecht Institute Dr. Wecht interviewed Dr. Naguchi (via videoconference) and Dr. Naguchi made no mention of this possibility. Perhaps for the second edition the author could check in with Dr. Naguchi and get his opinion about this.If you have an interest in the truth of who was behind RFK’s assassination and how it was done I strongly urge you to read this fabulous book.

I think this book has a lot of very nice pictures of people's crafts and the areas they work in, but that is about ALL the book has.Everything else reads like filler that just glosses over each subject very briefly. Or takes too much time to explain the completely obvious, like how to paint the lid of a jar or a clothes hanger. I am totally new to the subject of selling crafts and I don't belong to most of the social networking sights they mention, and STILL I feel like I learned nothing from this book. I read it cover to cover in part of an evening and felt like I completely wasted my time and money.

This really was not the book for me. It has lots of pictures and includes some tutorial ideas, but the only part of the book that I can use is Chapter 3-4, which covers things like taking good photographs of your products, pricing your work, packaging your items and things you need to know for selling in person at craft fairs. They have a handy checklist for what you should bring when you are doing an in-person event. Chapter 5 does cover a little bit about marketing and social media, so I'll probably skim through it and see if there's anything that might be useful for me.A lot of the book is about things like organizing your space, making vision boards, decorating your booth, making a logo for your online store and while that is probably useful for some readers, I was really looking for something much more hands-on and practical about actually running a craft business and selling your work. The aforementioned subjects in and of themselves can be good topics, but the way it is approached is too cursory and geared toward specific kinds of craft businesses. The organization tips are basically: this is how you should make cute little boxes or spools for your ribbons and here are decorative pen holders and push pins and things like that which are somewhat irrelevant for me. I appreciate the concept of adding a unique touch to your studio or office or customizing your packaging for customers but the particular things covered weren't necessarily applicable for everyone.The style aesthetic of the featured businesses were a big element of the book and those aesthetics don't quite match what I'm doing so I feel like a good portion of the book was pretty much wasted on me. I came away disappointed because some of the information isn't really translatable to any and all craft businesses. The book also leans heavily on the photographs without enough written content to give the book some "meaty" material that you can use when planning your business or moving your business from in-person fairs to online marketplaces (or vice-versa).I wish I could be more excited about this book. I just think it's a book geared for a different person. Maybe if you're specifically looking for crafty ideas to organize your do-dads and you've got a very shabby chic type of craft business and you want to see examples of setting up your stall/workspace, then this might be useful for you. Or maybe if you just want general visual inspiration. I'd give this 2.5 stars as far as usefulness and a 3 for having lots of visual examples.

I already work at a craft...I was looking for a book that would address exactly what this book's title suggests it does. There is some information, but it doesn't really deliver on its title.

Compared with some other books of a similar ilk, this one doesn't talk down to one, treats the reader as intelligent and offers useful and original hints. Unlike so many craft oriented publications, it doesn't only feature US crafters and is written so that those of us in the UK with similar worries can relate to the suggestions. Definitely worth buying.

This was probably one of the most helpful books of this kind I have read. It really helped me rebrand myself and take a new approach to selling which has helped me sell more. I loved that the book had great pictures, interviews with successful sellers, and great tips for many aspects of selling that I never even considered!

This is a good book for people looking to start with selling their crafts. Not for pros, but for starters. Good resource!
