The Title is a little misleading, it says "Lessons in Masterful..." but it is not a set of lessons (like many of the Atelier books out there), but more of Yim's philosophy of drawing. In chapter two, he does go through his entire process, but it is a very broad overview. He never goes into details on how to actually draw, so if you are getting this to learn to draw, it is not for you. In fact, if you have watched the Fine Art Academy videos on YouTube, its pretty much a book version of that. The rest of the book is just more or less a repetition of the same thing; examples of Yim's work and a quick overview of his approach to each. While there are some tidbits in there (such as only using straight lines to block in) that are helpful, overall, this book appears to just be a quick product to sell Yim's work.Yet, that is the saving grace, and why I'm giving it four stars (instead of two for false advertising). The artwork is amazing. Even the block-ins that he demonstrates are beautiful, and the pictures are very large and very good reproductions. As an art book, it is easily worth the price.Bottom line, if you are looking for a real lesson book with detailed instruction, there are much better options available. However, if you enjoy drawing portraits and you are just looking for something to give you inspiration, or you are a fan of pencil portraiture, this book is well worth the money.

I have many books on drawing, in particular on drawing portraits, and this one is the best. Mau-Kun Yim's portrati drawings are stunning. He explains the stages he goes through clearly and thoroughly, with photos of the drawings at different stages. It's fascinating and useful, and has helped me improve tremendously with my own portrait drawings. Highly, highly recommended.

It's a different approach than some portrait artists, which is a good thing. No technique is best. There is no holy grail for artists. It all depends on what works for the person reading it. While not 100% behind all the techniques in this book, I did find some valuable nuggets of info. At times the author/artist's tone was condescending and arrogant which was distracting, especially when all it seemed like he was trying to do was to elevate his own technique and style. So if you can ignore that pompous attitude, which I did (but often found myself muttering under my breath indignantly), it's underlying info is valuable. Could be edited better for those reasons.

I purchased this book several months ago and have been consulting it for advice and inspiration. I thoroughly enjoyed Mau-Kun Yim's philosophy and approach to drawing the portrait, particularly on how he broke down the concepts and related everything to building a house, i.e. from blueprint, foundation, all the way to finishing. I also appreciate how he emphasized the importance of re-discovering the traditional principles of proportion, anatomy, perspective, light, and value - and that drawing is also painting without color. I also like that he showed step-by-step demonstrations of portraits of certain individuals wherein he shares nuggets of information regarding the type of pencil to use at different stages, planar and linear advice, transitions, and the like.Over all I think that it is a very inspirational and good book, one that does not focus heavily on the "technicalities" of constructing a head, but rather the "essentials" and the motivations behind drawing the portrait. I wish Mr. Mau-Kun Yim would also write a similar book on oil painting and mixing colors. I would definitely purchase one if he did!

This is an amazingly beautiful book: excellence on every page by a master artist sharing drawing secrets worthy of the Old Masters. Mau-Kun YIM is inspiring. The "Drawing is a form of construction" section is illuminating. The book is also a father-daughter labor of love and the final Gallery of Drawings in pencil and charcoal features a stunning range of faces... breathtaking!-Ana

"Portrait Drawing" by Yim mau-Kun & Iris YimThis book presents solid instruction by a recognized master in portraiture. It is clear, concise, easy to follow and, unusually for a book on this subject, entertaining to read. Yim mau-Kun's many years as an instructor as well as a master artist are well presented, and Iris Yim's excellent interpretation is lively and clear. The demonstrations are easy to understand, and memorable. The examples of his work, in themselves, are worth the reasonable price of the book. "Portrait Drawing" would be of value to any artist at any stage of development. We are fortunate to have such a commanding talent, still working today, willing to share his knowledge.

I love The step by step development of a portrait, written in a prose that is direct but oddly eloquent. I appreciate the very direct instructions, like “start the detail work with the nose”, the admonition to treat each phase of the drawing without anticipating too much, what needs to be done next. The advise to focus on the task at hand, to think first in simple line, then form, then planes, then light and dark.

This book isn't for amateur artist, I think you need to have some type of artistic eye in applying some of the principles outlined in this book. Having said that, this book lays down the fundamental steps in approaching portrait design and drawing in general. The author provides a fine art approach to drawing, with plenty of step by step examples and images to support. What's also great is the image gallery in the second half of the book, showcasing both portrait and figure drawing. A great guide to portrait drawing, and as mentioned in the book, practice makes perfect.

It is too bad there is a version of this book for the old StarWars roleplaying rule set that shares the same name and general content. I don't own that piece but have seen it and this new book is MUCH better.SotG may have far fewer pages than the Core Rulebook for just a slightly smaller price but it is packed full of information that is useful for any RPG campain that values space combat or even travel. After a short introduction Champer 1 covers the basics of starships in adventuring; this includes answers to questions like "how much does it cost to opperate my ship?" and clarification on how various thing work in starship scale combat. In addition to clarifing how some corebook material works SotG also gives us some new talents and feats to use for our space going characters.Chapter 2 covers Starship Combat. This includes a new maneuver system that is similiar to how the core book uses force powers. Additionally, this chapter gives advice on creating interesting space encounters and tips on how to keep players interested but not overwhelmed.Chapter 3 is the section on modification. This chapter is a virtual shopping list of things that can be added to or changed on starships. The end of the chapter even gives a "stock ship" and cost for various ship types that would allow players to build their own ship.Chapter 4 covers the last two-thirds of the book and contains an extensive Codex of ships found in the StarWars universe. These range from small light fighters up to the Eclipse Super Star Destroyer from the Dark Horse Comic Series. Each of these many ships is given RPG stats, a brief writeup about its history and abilities, and most also include a color illustration showing what the ship looks like. The list doesn't cover everything which is nearly impossible given the size of the SW Universe but does include ships from all eras of play.Someone not into the roleplaying game may like the Starship Codex. For the roleplayer, I'd say this book is a must for any group that deals with space combat regularly.

Great resource for Star Wars ships. I have been looking for this out of print book for some time to finish off my Saga library. So happy I was able to purchase it at a reasonable price.

The first book to expand on the new Saga rules, and it's about as good as I expected. A good mix of starships that is perhaps a bit heavy on capitol ships and many fighters that are visually distinct but all have roughly the same rules. Likewise, there are few deckplans, pretty much limited to a underwhelming deckplan for a YT-1300. The customization rules work relatively well and are easy to use.Overall, I'd suggest it to people that like the new Saga Edition. It might be good for people that like Star Wars starships in general too.

Several months before the real work on Wilma Newton’s case begins, Rick’s father is killed in a hit and run accident, so Rick has been out of the office adjusting to the loss of his beloved father and helping his mother on her farm so he will be no assistance to Tom unless he can be encouraged to pitch in.This is a story of murder, a hired assassin, drugs, alcohol, greed, dishonesty, suspense, and twists and turns you won’t see coming, some of which will have you holding your breath. Robert Bailey is a master of writing legal thrillers, of helping his readers get to know his characters, and of making them human. I promise you, if you read The Professor and Between Black and White before you read The Last Trial you will need to have a box of tissues handy and if you read the Author’s Note at the end of the book you will wonder, as I did, how Robert Bailey could write this book. I guess he was just “minding his dad.”

I have great sympathy for the author, being a cancer survivor myself, and having lost a greatly loved one to cancer.But the story, after a good beginning, degenerates into silliness about three quarters of the way through.The witness to the murder was sitting on the lap of her professor facing outwards having rough sex when she heard gunshots and then looked through an astronomy telescope to see the murderer 300 yards away.First, in my experiences with sex no one is capable of coitus interruptus and focussing on a telescope eyepiece, particularly an astronomical instrument with a very small field of view and presumably focussed on infinity, so blurred at 300 yards.Then a 65 year old woman, all muddy, staggers out of the woods and proceeds to offer to sell joints to two drunken college students.Way to stay inconspicuous.It just won't work, and a decent beginning bites the dust.

This is Robert Bailey's 3rd book and in my opinion it is the best one . Some writers never learn and never become better .I am so anxious to receive the 4th and last of the series. Unfortunately, it will be a whole year before the book is released .I will very much miss all the characters. I have read many books in my life and have never felt this way prior to ROBERT BAILY.Thank you!!

It stands alone! This book was chosen for our book club and none of us except the one who chose it had read the others. Felt odd to read it out of order but you couldn’t tell at all. The characters were still so well developed and introduced! Tom, Bob, Wilma, Jack, Bully and so many more. And lest we forget the young gal who starts this ball rolling, Laurie Ann. Lots of twists and turns and “who done it’s?” The writer keeps you engaged and wanting more. I wasn’t ready for it to end and look forward to starting with book number one and reading through. The Alabama and especially Huntsville references were a sweet treat!!

It's a sad book, but so are all of The Professor's books are. I am encouraged by the acknowledgement at the end. Boy, this one really threw me for a loop! Talk about a shocking end! I highly recommend this book, but especially in the case of this series,it's important to read them in order. I just wish there wasn't such a huge space between the release of these books. I might just start them all again from the beginning.

Having read all three books in this series, I am impressed with the humanity that is imbued in the main characters. There is an old fashioned sense of good vs evil with honor and goodness prevailing.While not essential, it helps to read these books in order as characters reappear and factor strongly into the plot lines.Tom and Bo are true champions of Justice. The courtroom scenes are always fraught with tension. Even the prosecution team plays fair when justice is on the line.Interestingly the Late Bear Bryant also figures heavily in the character development. Clearly the author is a fan.I can't wait for the next book. Given the world we are currently living in, this series is a breath of fresh air carrying hope for the future

This is an interesting and suspenceful story, with enough clues to solve the mystery, but just enough misdirection to make the ending a surprise. The characters are well developed, and it made me hope that McMurtrie will still be around to attend one more "last trial".One thing I noticed is that the story reads like an extended "product placement" ad. No one gets into their car, they get into their Toyota Camry or their Tundra truck. Or they wear an UnderArmor tshirt. Or Nike tennis shoes. Well ok, eventually one "product" becomes important in solving the who-done-it. Maybe it has to be done that way to allow the clues to work. Nevertheless, it caught my attention while reading the novel.

About the Author

Victoria Glendinning was born in the north of England and read French and Spanish at Oxford. Her first book was A Suppressed Cry, a family memoir about her Quaker great-aunt. She has written biographies of Edith Sitwell (which won the James Tait Black Award and the Duff Cooper Prize), Vita Sackville-West (Whitbread Prize for Biography), Rebecca West, Anthony Trollope (Whitbread Prize for Biography), Jonathan Swift, and Leonard Woolf. She co-edited Mothers and Sons with her son Matthew Glendinning, and has published three novels, The Grown-Ups, Electricity, and Flight. She reviews books for national newspapers and journals, has been a judge of the W. H. Smith Prize and other literary awards, and chair of the judges of the Booker Prize. From 2000-03 she was president of English PEN. She is an Honorary Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford, and was awarded a CBE in 1998.

I have to declare an interest here, I knew Victoria Glendinning quite well at one time.One of the striking features of this biography is the way in which Victoria's own life in Ireland makes her sympathetic to the politics when Elizabeth lived there and which she portrays so vividly, particulary in The Last September. Elizabeth shows her readers how various classes of people, particularly the Anglo-Irish saw their environment.Victoria used her extensive research to describe many aspects of Elizabeth's life and their effects on her writing, thus making her novels both more interesting and more approachable today, when life is very different.

Ms Bowen is one of my all time favorite writers and this book was certainly up to her treasured excellence.

I bought this book for my brother and he is absolutely delighted with it. A great and interesting read. He thoroughly recommends.

Anchor recently has been reissuing almost all of Elizabeth Bowen's novels in gorgeous new editions, and they decided to complement these with this reissue of this excellent 1977 standard life of one of the greatest twentieth-century novelists by Victoria Glendinning, herself one of the best living British biographers. The work is a model of tasteful compression, covering Bowen's very eventful life in only three hundred pages. Glendinning is intelligent in her discussion of Bowen's novels and short fiction, and is exceptionally clear in outlining the major events of Bowen's life: her father's madness in her childhood; her mother's early death from cancer; her remaining awkward adolescence raised by "a committee of aunts'; her beginning literary career in London; her marriage to the bureaucrat Alan Cameron; her inheritance of her father's great ancestral manor house Bowen's Court in County Cork; her affairs; her spying on her native Ireland for Great Britain during World War II; the death of Cameron; her need to sell Bowen's Court in 1959 only to see it immediately torn down by the new owner; and her subsequent itinerant life as one of the last great modernist novelists. It's a very lovely book--Glendinning seems extraordinarily sympathetic to Bowen's humor, elegance, and her grande dame manner.

This coloring book has 25 different designs (the referenced 50 comes from getting two of each of the designs.) The designs really evoke the look and feel of ancient artwork to me. While they are not perfect replicas of known work, they have many of the iconic images I am looking for.The designs are very detailed with but not what I consider intricate. There are many areas to color but I can use most coloring medium without any issues. I think crayons might be more difficult unless you can sharpen them to a fairly fine point.While you can have access to .PDFs when you purchase this book, my review is based on the book as it is received from Amazon. That way you will know what the pages look like and how they accept color. I like that the publisher provides the digital version as well so you can choose the paper you wish to use and/or to color the pictures as many times as you choose.This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:25 x 2 Designs based on Egyptian Hieroglyphs with stylized posesPaper is typical of CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. The back of the page is printed black which is something I am find typical of Jade Summer coloring books.The designs do not merge into the binding. There is a heavy framing line at the outer edges of the design to give the project a more finished look, especially for framing. There is a slight shadowing effect to the framing line which gives the image an almost 3D effect.Glue Binding (there is room to cut the pages out if you choose to do so.)Though you cannot see the bleed-through easily due to the back of the page being printed in black, I recommend the use of a blotter page when working in this book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.Water-based markers bleed through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.

I am very happy with my purchase. Very good quality of pictures - clear outlines of beautifully done pictures. Paper quality is as expected for this price range coloring books - great for pencils. I like watercolor and the paper is quite adequate for watercolor paints too. It is not watercolor paper, those books are at least twice as expensive as this one.I really enjoy working with this book. Looked up what pigments they had in Ancient Egypt and mix similar shade paints to make my pictures look authentic.Getting a PDF file of the book is very helpful for future copies on watercolor paper.Will definitely buy more coloring books by Jade Summer.Just added the first page colored in watercolor paint. The paint worked pretty well on this paper.

I was really pleased with this book. The individual pages are one sided with the backside black. Very clever. There are two of each individual image so if you feel like you want to do an image differently you can. I really like that you can download a .pdf version of the images in the book. I haven't tried accessing them yet, but will definitely try tonight.I think one of the best parts is that the book isn't too busy. Yes, there is a lot of detail. But no so much that you can't actually color in the details because they are tiny or overwhelming. I personally don't like "busy" coloring books. Each page has a clear focal. I like that.

There's a lot of good things about this book. First, there's two sets of the drawings. Second, the drawings are only on side of the page and the back of each page is black, both things helping to prevent bleed-through. Another good thing is the artwork which looks really nice. Further the drawings are not overly complicated, making coloring them fairly easy.

Great coloring book with intricate Egyptian iconography. Printed on one side, pages are black on the back. 26 different designs with a duplicate of each. Well constructed.Love these Egyptian designs! There's a digital copy available from the publisher when you purchase, which is awesome.

I realize that this is just a coloring book and not sketches directly from the Egyptian museum, however, I would like to have seen a better job on the figures presented for coloring. There also seems to be way too much detail that is very difficult to color coordinate. Other reviewers have also commented on the cartoon like nature of the drawings and I think that takes away from a the subject matter a little. There's plenty to be had, however, in a book under eight dollars, but I do wish the detail could have been a little more authentic since this is billed as an adult coloring book.

Very detailed drawings that are small & intricate. Very few monuments mostly pages & pages of hieroglyphs. I have several Jade books however this not my favorite because the drawings are very similar & I got bored.

Thank you Jade! Job well done on this beautiful Egyptian coloring book. Not to intricate just perfect! Great for coloring with any medium. Every page comes to life with endless possibilities. Highly recommend!
