I got this book and dove in, hoping for some real-world guidance that would help me create a healthier lifestyle. The author combines shamanic spiritual principles with unique and very rigorous dietary requirements. He promises the combination will quickly de-tox the body, especially the brain. He even claims that sticking to his regime will revitalize sick vital organs. While I believe strongly in the mind-body connection and the value of clean eating, his ideas go far beyond these steps. Readers are encouraged to make mini-retreats and embrace spiritual practices taught by shamans. To get all the desired results, they must invest in a vast array of supplements, most of which I found were very expensive. The diet also requires eating organic foods as well as creating special soups, smoothies, juices, and dressings.I'll never know whether this works because I have neither the time nor money for the program. It might be a great experiment for someone with lots of ready cash and time on their hands, but no one I know has a lifestyle that supports that.Ironically, early in the book the author comments that wealthy women tend to live about 10 years longer than those with less money. Apparently irony is lost on him.Perhaps his program has merit, but it seems out of reach for anyone not willing to upend their finances and lifestyles on the off chance that a miracle solution will allow them to live to 100. Can't recommend the book to the average reader.

Once I started reading Grow a New Body, I'd a hard time putting it down. Before sharing some details of the book, I just wanted to clarify that it’s the first book I read from Dr. Villoldo, and although I enjoy exploring practices that promote wellbeing from a variety of perspectives, it’s also the first time I’ve had contact with shamanic rituals. After all, why wouldn’t I be interested in learning subjects I appreciate—nutrition, spirituality, nature—from a new angle?Let me divide this review in 3 parts. First, I’ll share some thoughts and takeaways from the read. Then, I hope to write a summary from each chapter of the book with some excerpts I highlighted while reading it. Last, I’ll include personal advices to whom I’d recommend reading the book.PERSONAL THOUGHTSI was thrilled to learn Dr. Villoldo’s diet plan is aligned with the latest evidences of unbiased clinical and experimental researches. After all, his protocol is similar to the ones reputable figures such as Dr. Hyman, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Longo, Dr. Lipman and Dr. Perlmutter recommend. Right in Chapter 1 we get a glimpse of what’s coming ahead—we delve into the details later, in Chapters 5 and 6.Just recently I started studying the synergy between food and spiritual rituals as a one practice. I used to think of them as separate activities. Well, they can be powerful when brought together, creating a deep sense of awareness and gratitude due to their potential to heal from inside out. So why not taking advantage of that while preparing, consuming, and digesting our meals? As I shared above, it's the first time reading about shamanic practices, but during the last year or so I’ve had the chance to read 2 books that incorporate spiritual practices and rituals around meals. They focus mostly on Buddhist practices involving cooking and eating, whereas Grow a New Body also adds the healing aspect of proper nourishment to the spiritual practice.Even though I enjoy being in nature, going on adventures with certain regularity, and being away from technology whenever is possible, I’ve never brought shamanic rituals into my forays, and never being on a true vision quest as Dr. Villoldo suggests in Chapter 14—which is the culmination of what we previously learn throughout the book. I’m sincerely excited to try it out. Just as an encouraging clarification, we surely don’t have to attend any one of his retreats or to spend money with expensive products and vitamins. In fact, Dr. Villoldo states clearly right in the introduction “…in this book, I offer you the same practices you’d learn in the retreats, including the medicine plants and spiritual strategies that will help you return to health and keep your health for the rest of your life.” Also, for the vision quest, we don’t have to go in the remote wilderness; instead, Dr. Villoldo suggests that the natural setting can be done even in an urban area close to home, just making sure “the place is beautiful, safe, and sufficiently secluded that you’ll not be interrupted by hikers.”Some of the takeaways I learned throughout the book are: [1] exploring rituals enrich life experiences, [2] being open to unknown elements by trusting our instincts is key in life, [3] being in direct contact with nature in a deeper level is innate to us, and [4] having simple yet nutritious meals is precisely important for our healing journey.SUMMARY[Introduction] Right in the beginning Dr. Villoldo explains how his life turned upside down unexpectedly during a conference upon noticing he couldn’t walk without collapsing in exhaustion. After a complete battery of tests, medical doctors found out he’d contracted parasites, hepatitis virus and toxic bacterias throughout the years doing research in Indonesia, Africa and South America. Trough a combination of Western medicine and spiritual medicine received from the shamans in the Amazon he was able to get fully recovered. At the end we learn that our organs can regenerate when our bodies are directed to grow healthy, vibrant new cells.[Chapter 1] According to the One Spirit Medicine, “the best way to heal and maintain health is to grow a new body on a regular basis. It recognizes the body as a system, not as a collection of parts that can be medicated or replaced when they go wrong. You can’t repair the heart without attending to the gut and the brain, and vice versa.” In addition to thinking about what to eat and when to eat, we learn the importance of setting up a choreographed encounter in nature to accelerate the body’s self-repair and regeneration systems and to reconnect to our own deepest purpose.[Chapter 2] Dr. Villoldo shares insights from the Amazon healers who took him under their wing. In his own words, “I learned that there were 2 magical ingredients to health. The first ingredient could be found only in the invisible matrix of the universe—what I call Oneness. The second ingredient was the plants that promote health, but don’t treat specific disease.” He further explains that the visible and invisible worlds are intertwined with precision, and once we’ve opened our eyes to this, we can dance between them. We learn that our Spirit is omnipresence and explore ways to harmonize its forces, “in fact, Spirit isn’t a deity at all. Spirit is the great balancing force of life itself. It brings harmony, not punishment.” Later we’re introduced to the luminous energy field, which surrounds the physical body to inform our cells and biome about how to live in harmony. Our intention is to raise the quality of our luminous energy field to express the genes for health and longevity, and to live a more original and rewarding life.[Chapter 3] According to Dr. Villoldo, we can’t really change our minds without changing our brains: “after you detox your brain and begin to manufacture brain’s natural bliss molecule, you’ll be able to transform toxic relationships, upgrade your health, and repair your emotions more easily.” To rewire our neural networks we’ve to detoxify our brain.[Chapter 4] Here is a primer on the gut-brain connection. We learn the importance of maintaining a healthy microbiome in order to prosper in life. As an example, Dr. Villoldo shows how a diet rich in sugar—or foods rich in sugar substitutes—is the main cause for Candida proliferation inside the gut. He by no means forgets to include worthwhile advices on how counteract Candida naturally. Later in the chapter, we become aware that “the human brain isn’t designed to handle the toxins released in the environment over the last century.” As Dr. Villoldo puts, it’s not something we don’t know yet. What’s new is “our understanding that these neurotoxins prevent us from attaining the experience of Oneness so easily reached by our Paleolithic ancestors.” We then delve into the dangers of genetically modified foods, grains, and leaky gut syndrome.[Chapter 5] Now we shift gears toward the longevity genes. It’s where cutting edge research topics are discussed to clarify how we can, in fact, grow a new body through proper nutrition. Among them, we learn [1] feasible strategies to implement intermittent fasting, [2] the importance of cycling protein to avoid overconsumption, [3] the mechanisms of mTOR, a metabolic regulatory pathway, and ways to calibrate its activation, [4] and a description of the different fat sources.[Chapter 6] Dr. Villoldo walks us through the nutrition plan. Based on a plant-based diet, “some plants are considered superfoods because of the epigenetic instructions they provide to our DNA. Phytonutrients are the reason the villagers I met along the Amazon didn’t suffer from the four great maladies of modern life: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.” We learn the details of specific food sources that activate NrF2 inside the cells to turn on the longevity genes. Among them, cruciferous vegetables, turmeric, walnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, almonds, olive oil, avocados, berries, and fermented foods are high in the list.[Chapter 7] This chapter is dedicated to the importance of mitochondria—from its emerging days as the first oxygen-breathing bacteria on Earth all the way to the latest evidences showing that fueling mitochondria with proper nutrition help us thrive in life. I highlighted the following passage due to its clarity: “By changing to a diet high in plant foods and healthy fats and low in carbs, your pancreas will quiet the insulin system that activates the mTOR pathway. Autophagy will kick in. Toxins stored inside the cells will be eliminated. Dead mitochondria will be recycled for their amino acids. The system will run as it’s supposed to.” At the end of the chapter Dr. Villoldo shares 3 key substances—brain-derived neurotrophic factor, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase—that can help us grow a new and healthier brain by producing neural stem cells. Also, he doesn’t forget to include how we can increase their levels naturally.[Chapter 8] Now we explore strategies to free ourselves from stressors. Dr. Villoldo states that fear make us sick, explaining that “many of the health problems we face today are caused by our unhealed emotions, and paramount among these is fear.” He then goes further by showing that when toxic emotions dominate our thinking and nervous system, we put ourselves in danger. “To stop being the victim of your circumstances and become a hero embarking on an epic journey of discovery, you’ll need to heal your emotions.” For that, we learn that life offers “plenty of challenges and stressors that will allow you to transform toxic emotions like fear and anger into positive feelings like compassion and love.” Finally, the following topics—limiting beliefs, overstimulation and fight-or-flight, addiction to adrenaline, fear of death, and separation versus unity—are all discussed one by one to bring us close to experiencing Oneness.[Chapter 9] Step by step, we first eliminate the poisons in our body and upgrade our brain with superfoods and neuron nutrients, switching on the genes for health and turning off the genes for disease. Then we transform our toxic emotions, reset fight-or-flight, and turn on the production of the bliss-creating molecules in our brain. Now, “the next step will be to let go on the familial and cultural myths that script your life. You can then adopt a new, more empowering myth that supports your ability to dream a new body and a new world into being.” This chapter is an introduction to mythology, explaining how myths can influence the way we perceive the world and, consequently, the choices we make every day. It sets the stage for the next 4 chapters, where “we’ll look at 4 myths that illustrate the power that comes with embracing a new personal mythology.”[Chapter 10] The first story is about the legend of Parsifal, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, which “illustrates a man’s archetypal quest for wholeness and healing, the struggle to let go of the identities of the past in order to evolve.” We learn that when we finally let go of who we think we’re supposed to be and shed our fear of disapproval, we open our eyes to new opportunities.[Chapter 11] The story of Psyche, who challenged death, tells us that the young part of ourselves, full of fresh ideas and the opportunities they bring, threatens the old ways. “As the myth points out, this is precisely what fear of death and loss can do—destroy our beauty and vitality.” Dr. Villoldo ends the chapter by saying that mastering the fear of death is a lifelong process—that we’ll be challenged and tested many times, although with each time, the way becomes easier.[Chapter 12] As part of his duty, the archer Arjuna becomes deeply conflicted at the prospect of battling against his own relatives. The god Krishna stops the action, calms Arjuna down, and explains that “when we become still in the midst of the turmoil, we can observe clearly how our actions and the actions of others, past and present, fit together in the tapestry of life. In the timeless instant when we stop moving and simply witness the moment, the dust settles and the big picture emerges. Then, with this new map of reality in hand, we can choose wisely what course to pursue.”[Chapter 13] The story of Siddhartha illustrates “the awakening of vision, the call to destiny, and the return to the world to share what we’ve learned.” Siddhartha, an Indian prince who later became the Buddha, noticed during his first foray outside the palace that in life [1] there is suffering, [2] that suffering is caused by attachment, and [3] to end suffering, we have to release all attachments. He then abandoned his life of richness and ease, and set out as a wandering monk to find an end to his suffering. After years in deep meditation he came to direct knowledge of [4] the path leading to the cessation of aging and death. These are, in fact, the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism.[Chapter 14] This chapter is probably my favorite: the vision quest. We learn how transformative the vision quest was for Dr. Villoldo’s clients through their personal stories while going through not only discomfort and fear, but also experiencing personal evolution, a deep appreciation for life, and an intuitive understanding of the wonder of Oneness. In Dr. Villoldo’s own words, “a vision quest can change your life forever. It’s impossible to forget the intense awakening to your luminous nature that comes as the hunger pangs subside", adding that "it’s a powerful way to begin your transformation, a means of jump-starting your personal evolution and your new body.” At the end of the chapter he offers a step-by-step manual to create our own 3-day vision quest in a natural setting.[Chapter 15] Here we learn the details of the Grow a New Body program. Dr. Villoldo walks us through the program with care, bringing all the information previously learned in an instructional format. In fact, it’s one of the most comprehensible implementation manuals I’ve ever read.[Chapter 16] Next, there is a 5-minute questionnaire to explore the quality of our health in terms of physical and emotional sensations, as well as about sleep quality and overall energy. Dr. Villoldo suggests to score ourselves before and after completing the Grow a New Body program.[Chapter 17] This chapter is composed by simple recipes intended to be prepared during the 7-day Grow a New Body program. As he states, the 7-day program “is designed to stress your system in subtle ways so that it’ll respond creatively by going into repair and regeneration mode.” In terms of recipes, I’ve only tried 2 of them because the ingredients were on hand. In fact, I've just had the “Green Smoothie” before starting to write the review. A refreshing combination of spinach, kale, lemon, fresh ginger, mint leaves, coconut oil, and ripe avocado. Yesterday evening I tried the “Los Lobos Vegetable Soup” for dinner. It's aromatic.[Chapter 18] Last, Dr. Villoldo explains how simple strategies taken on a daily basis can protect our health. We come back to the discussion of the primary metabolic regulatory pathway, mTOR. When mTOR is activated, it fuels growth and regeneration, and its activity can enhance cellular maintenance and repair at the expense of accelerated aging. For young and even midlife athletes, stimulating mTOR to build muscle and enjoy greater strength is a worthy goal. However, if we can slow down the activity of mTOR as adults, “we can take nature’s foot off of the accelerator of aging and experience a longer health span.” It turns out that to slow aging, from the mTOR perspective, we should reduce the intake of meats, dairy, and eggs—all rich in the amino acid leucine which activates mTOR the most. Finally, we learn strategies to prevent cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and dementia.RECOMMENDATIONI hope the summary helps you form an idea of the content before making any commitment. I’d sincerely recommend the book if you’re interested in incorporating spiritual practices along with your own eating habits, specially if you're familiar with similar nutrition plans suggested by those doctors mentioned in the beginning of the review. Also, if you’ve experienced shamanic rituals before, but aren’t aware of the natural and healing nutrition plan proposed here, this book can be a valuable complementation. After all, the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts.Although I’d love to recommend this book to all of us, it wouldn’t be fair. Not all of us are willing to embark on spiritual forays or willing to adopt a primarily plant-based diet rich in good fats and phytonutrients—after all, they’re the core of One Spirit Medicine. That said, the content is so valuable—and beautifully explained—that can take us by surprise.Well, it turned out to be a long review. I was excited to share some thoughts with you because the content has potential to improve the quality of our lives in the present and in the long run. All that to say that I’ve just purchased the audio version to listen to it before embarking on my first vision quest. I also hope to purchase the physical version at my local bookstore so I can share it with loved ones.Take good care,Haical

I completely love this book and I don't use that word lightly. I cannot put this book down and habe started implementing the program already. I love his anthropological explanations and even had a couple of epiphanies while reading it. I am allowing this book to be a life-changer for me. I am a Functional Medicine Health Coach and love how he ties so many aspects of what I have learned together. Love it! There is a lot you can do here without spending a lot on supplements! May this change your life as well. Be well, my sister or brother!

This is also my first encounter with Roberto Villoldo and I enjoy his writing and philosophy. The program may take some effort, but I don't feel it is unattainable. You don't need to take mini-retreats, but suggests a vision quest which can be done in a multitude of ways that support your own situation and lifestyle. He gives many options to attain results, but if that is what you need to do, then you must! I find it the most exciting part of the journey. As far as the supplements go, I think you have to decide whether to spend your money on the front side or the back side - just my opinion. I am more of a fan of moderation in everything and I will miss my carbs, dairy & (some) processed foods; but they are truly poisoning our bodies and destroying our health - we've known that for a while now - so it's basically a decision about when are you ready to stop the madness and give your body and soul the nourishment it needs and desires. I'm getting started now - not sick, but getting older and have a few extra pounds I wouldn't mind shedding after menopause. We'll see how it goes!

Excellent insightful reviews of universal history and truths. Fresh encouragement to bloom as an interconnected individual!

Life changing book! It's fantastic, couldn't put it down, so interesting and I love that it explores our spiritual relationship with food and our brain.

Great Exhibits!: An Exhibit Planning and Construction Handbook for Small Museums

Review

There are many handbooks about creating exhibitions, but this is the first one I found that really goes into the basics, the nuts and bolts of exhibit planning and installing. It is especially good for people in small museums who wear many – if not all – hats in the process. The many practical examples from label writing to mannequin building show that you don’t need a big budget to create compelling exhibitions. (Angela Kipp, collections manager, TECHNOSEUM, Mannheim, Germany, and co-founder and administrator of Registrar Trek)Ms. Hansen's extensive experience with small museums qualifies her as an excellence source of information and inspiration for exhibit makers in similar settings. Her practical guide, rich with suggestions and easy-to-use worksheets, will be useful for small museums of any topic or location. (Beverly Serrell, Director, Serrell & Associates and author of "Exhibit Labels: An Interpretive Approach")

I flagged all the important pages and realized that I flagged most of the pages! It is that good a book. For my small museum and my first exhibit, Great Exhibits! has been a godsend. I feel less intimidated by the prospect and am ready to tackle the job.

Excellent reference book for any small museum. Provides a lot of guidance on preparing, designing, and constructing exhibits for museums.

Great book for people in museum studies programs! First six chapters discusses preparation before putting together exhibitions (audience surveys, layout, labeling, etc). Sample to do and checklists are in each chapter. Chapter 7 involves actual exhibit construction---types of frames, display cases, etc. Whether you are a curator of a museum or an artist that needs to understand how an exhibit is put together, this book is a treasure to those involved in exhibit planning!

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, by Michelle Alexander

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Contrary to the rosy picture of race embodied in Barack Obama's political success and Oprah Winfrey's financial success, legal scholar Alexander argues vigorously and persuasively that [w]e have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it. Jim Crow and legal racial segregation has been replaced by mass incarceration as a system of social control (More African Americans are under correctional control today... than were enslaved in 1850). Alexander reviews American racial history from the colonies to the Clinton administration, delineating its transformation into the war on drugs. She offers an acute analysis of the effect of this mass incarceration upon former inmates who will be discriminated against, legally, for the rest of their lives, denied employment, housing, education, and public benefits. Most provocatively, she reveals how both the move toward colorblindness and affirmative action may blur our vision of injustice: most Americans know and don't know the truth about mass incarceration—but her carefully researched, deeply engaging, and thoroughly readable book should change that. Review

“Explosive debut…alarming, provocative and convincing.”—Kirkus Reviews “Michelle Alexander’s brave and bold new book paints a haunting picture in which dreary felon garb, post-prison joblessness, and loss of voting rights now do the stigmatizing work once done by colored-only water fountains and legally segregated schools. With dazzling candor, Alexander argues that we all pay the cost of the new Jim Crow.“—Lani Guinier, professor at Harvard Law School and author of Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice and The Miner's Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy “For every century there is a crisis in our democracy, the response to which defines how future generations view those who were alive at the time. In the 18th century it was the transatlantic slave trade, in the 19th century it was slavery, in the 20th century it was Jim Crow. Today it is mass incarceration. Alexander's book offers a timely and original framework for understanding mass incarceration, its roots to Jim Crow, our modern caste system, and what must be done to eliminate it. This book is a call to action.”—Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO, NAACP “With imprisonment now the principal instrument of our social policy directed toward poorly educated black men, Michelle Alexander argues convincingly that the huge racial disparity of punishment in America is not the mere result of neutral state action. She sees the rise of mass incarceration as opening up a new front in the historic struggle for racial justice. And, she’s right. If you care about justice in America, you need to read this book!”—Glenn C. Loury, economist at Brown University and author of The Anatomy of Racial Inequality and Race, Incarceration and American Values “After reading The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander's stunning work of scholarship, one gains the terrible realization that, for people of color, the American criminal justice system resembles the Soviet Union's gulag---the latter punished ideas, the former punishes a condition.”—David Levering Lewis, Pulitzer-prize winning historian at NYU and author of W.E.B. Du Bois: The Fight for Equality and the American Century, 1919-1963 "We need to pay attention to Michelle Alexander's contention that mass imprisonment in the U.S. constitutes a racial caste system. Her analysis reflects the passion of an advocate and the intellect of a scholar."—Marc Mauer, Executive Director, The Sentencing Project, author of Race to Incarcerate “A powerful analysis of why and how mass incarceration is happening in America, The New Jim Crow should be required reading for anyone working for real change in the criminal justice system.”—Ronald E. Hampton, Executive Director, National Black Police Association

Very rare to read a book that is as well researched and as well organized and as well written as this one by Michelle Alexander. No fluff or filler in the book, only a concise description of how and why the elites of America have sought to segregate people of color and how they continue to use the them as slave labor that profits American business owners. The author provides the facts and figures to put into context how we got to where we are today. How Bill Clinton cut funding for public housing by $17 billion while increasing funding for prisons by $19 billion, in effect taking people from their homes and putting them into prisons where they could be a controlled labor force.Another insight is how the change in the drug laws has enabled targeting black men and women and then their status as ex convicts is used to deny them employment, housing, public benefits, jury service, and even the right to vote. The use of criminal records becomes a convenient cover for discriminating against people of color. One realizes how rigged the criminal justice system was and continues to be with 90% of those charged with an offense forced with the mandatory sentencing laws enacted under Bill Clinton (Hillary's husband) will plead guilty to a lesser offense and do so never having spoken to a lawyer. Even with probation and no time in jail these individuals become felons for life and discriminated against for the rest of their lives.

While Alexander makes several good points about the dilemma of the US criminal Justice system, a system admittedly with many flaws, she constantly employs false dichotomies and uses single statistics to overreach and convey a conclusion that simply isn't supported by her evidence. It's hard to take cold, generalized statistics and apply them to every single individual case accurately. When you begin taking individual cases one by one, these cold statistics don't always show the conclusion that someone like this author hopes they might. In one instance, the author attempts to paint President Clinton as a closeted racist, liberal sellout, and conservative crony intent on deploying the death sentence on as many black males as he can in order to sway white voters by falsely reporting the details of an execution he attended while Gov. of Arkansas. In the first chapter the author writes that in an effort to appeal to the white lower class voter,"Bill Clinton vowed that he would never permit any Republican to be perceived as tougher on crime than he. True to his word, just weeks before the critical New Hampshire primary, Clinton chose to fly home to Arkansas to oversee the execution of Ricky Ray Rector, a mentally impaired black man who had so little conception of what was about to happen to him that he asked for the dessert from his last meal to be saved for him until the morning."At first glance I found this to be quite an appalling thing for the then Governor to focus on. It seemed as though some mentally impaired man had been a victim of his own impairment, possibly committing a crime he had no intention of committing or any knowledge of what he was actually doing, and that the state of Arkansas was about to murder him simply for being less intelligent than the general public. Alexander makes it sound as though this man was innocent. Her words lead you to believe Bill Clinton is the monster in this story and that Rector was the victim of racial prejudice. What she didn't write, is that Ricky Rector murdered a man at a club because the bouncer wouldn't let his friend, who wouldn't pay the $3 cover charge, in to the building. Rector became angry, pulled a gun, and fired several shots at the bouncer, wounding two bystanders and killing one man instantly, after the man was struck in the throat and spine by Rector's .38 caliber revolver round. Rector fled the scene, evaded police for 3 days, and eventually agreed to surrender to a police officer he'd known since childhood. This police officer, Robert Martin, visited Rector at Rector's mother's house, where it was implied the surrender would occur. Once in the house, Robert Martin was eventually shot twice in the back by Rector, and died shortly after. Rector now had 2 assaults and 2 murder's on his list of pending charges. And by the way, he is not mentally impaired, at all. That comes next.Rector, realizing his grievous error in life choices decides enough is enough and walks out the back of his mother's house, having just shot and killed Robert Martin, and puts the gun to his own head. He fires, but misses slightly. The round penetrates his skull, destroying his frontal lobe, but leaving him alive nonetheless. This is where his "mental impairment" begins. This doesn't sound like much of a victim to me. This mental impairment the author appeals to is one of his own doing, and one resulting from a choice he made to kill himself after consciously deciding to fire several shots into a crowd of people and then intentionally killing an indefensible man. This sort of sweeping logic the author does in order to keep the dirt she want's out and the rest under the rug makes for a difficult and frustrating read. You want to agree with her on most points, but she blatantly misrepresents the facts on so many occasions that you end up writing amazon reviews to express your frustration. This book started off okay, but it's false implications like this that show the author's intentions. While they are likely coming from a point of genuine concern, they are not in good faith, nor those of someone coming from an unbiased point of view. Read it, but don't just take it at it's word. Just like any other opinion.

I came into this book with a pretty decent grasp on Alexander's thesis—thanks in part to the deserved hype her work has received over the years—but found myself captivated as she connected the dots on so many different aspects of mass incarceration, the War on Drugs, Jim Crow, and the historical intersection between classism and racism.Alexander notes in her preface that she wrote this book specifically for people who already care about racial justice, and if you're one of those people, I urge you to read this with the promise that you will come away from it with a much more comprehensive understanding of our current racial caste system. It's so well-researched, so informative, and so compelling. I've seen some readers lament that Alexander spends parts of the second half of the book rehashing arguments from the first half, but this approach actually worked for me: by reiterating certain points throughout, she helped me better understand their context within the bigger picture. Finally, I have to say that reading this book now—during this point in time—was especially impactful. I learned that there's a deep history of politicians and wealthy whites exploiting white working class vulnerabilities and racial resentments in order to preserve power and deliberately driving a wedge between poor whites and poor minorities. With so much talk right now about the economic anxieties of white working class Trump voters, I came away from this book with an even deeper conviction that pandering to poor and working class whites exclusively is absolutely not the answer. Rather, we need a real movement that addresses class struggles among all races so that we don't risk history continuing to repeat itself.

I kind of knew what was happening in my states penitentiaries because I worked my way through college as a state correctional officer. But reading the cold hard facts is especially numbing because I know I contributed in building this New Jim Crow System. After reading this book I feel that I have to take part in dismantling this awful for profit warehousing of my Brothers and Sisters. This book was delivered quickly and was well packaged. I would gladly do business with this Seller again in the future. I pray that enough well meaning people of all races in the USA read this well thought out book and are as deeply moved by it as I am. This was not an easy read for me. But I needed a wake up call especially given the current racial climate of the country.

over the years, i have always tried to keep a journal for almost every reason: self reflection, record keeping, mental health improvement, decluttering of ideas, inspiration, happiness meter, running diary, etc etc. i say "tried" because inevitably, a few days or maybe even a few weeks later, i would loose the notebook, forget about the notebook's existence, or straight up abandon the project altogether.for a while i had given up on the idea of keeping a record of my daily thoughts and emotions.and then i opened "pick me up."what's different about "pick me up" is that the (arguably) toughest part of self reflection is already complete: considering the thought or action you need to capture or consider. adam has crammed a roller coaster of reflections, ideas and provocations that really make you think about feelings and emotions you may have otherwise ignored.i keep mine on my desk at work for times when i'm feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or even just a bit spacey and i find myself going back and forth between old and new entries, contemplating how i was feeling a week, a day, or even a few hours prior.if you've ever been interested in keeping a journal or recording your thoughts and feelings daily, this book is for you. even if you're not interested in keeping a journal or recording your thoughts and feelings daily, you will still find great value in what you're inspired to consider while flipping through the pages.all at once hilarious and heartbreaking, "pick me up" is an essential pick me up and well worthy of picking up.

I was quite excited to receive my very own Pick Me Up book. Upon receiving it, I thought it was a great way to express myself and a neat reminder of when I needed to be uplifted. Especially because I enjoy doodling. My issue with the book is that it keeps asking me to share pages or to market the book by posting passages on social media. Which I understand is important to the author for exposure and sales but as an introvert, I find this disruptive. For example, there is a page where you can write to someone to be thankful for but it suggest that you share it. I think this book can be very intimate but the shameless marketing ruins it. I recommend this book to extraverted teens or adults who are into social media. Cute idea but not as helpful as it could be!

I received this book today, but I already know that's it's going to become a go-to activity book/journal/therapy sesh. Full of creative prompts and drawings, with funny and sad existential humor, Pick Me Up is something you're going to thank yourself for purchasing. Adam JK is an artist who is just straight up super talented at his job, whatever his job is.

I really enjoy using some of the worksheets in here with my high school students. The content isn't too young or too old and my students find it pretty fun.

Kurtz does a great job at creating interactive, fun, and thought provoking pages. I don't usually write in books I own, but this one you have to! I love just opening to a page reading the one line of instructions and then going at it. Helpful to get out of a stuck mindset, to move you forward, all the having a bit of fun. Recommended for those who need a bit of a pick me up!

Another great book from Adam J Kurtz! This book has a lot of the prompts that make one page at a time great + new & creative prompts that definitely cheer me up! Fun book for yourself or to give as a gift!

I’ve never been one to finish a self help kind of book. Pick Me Up is so much more than that. It is fun, interactive, and productive all at the same time. It’s the kind of book that reminds us, that we all have struggles, but there’s hope. It reminds us to not take ourselves so seriously all the time. And as the Author reminds us throughout the entire book, we will be Okay. Hands down best book / journal I’ve read / written in. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to uplift their life, ponder, learn about themselves, and laugh. The best part, besides the fun quotes, as you go back, and see the things you wrote, and all your progress you’ve made, you get to erase, and smile at your accomplishments, and then restart as you feel fit. Looking forward to receiving his next book!

This book was a gift for my brother while he was in rehab. He loved it . It just helped him get distracted and center himself .The creator/author of this interactive book is awesome . Thank you for creating a template for self expression

Well, there is some good information in this item. I wonder who, if anyone that can effectively communicate in English, proofread this thing. The "book" is chock full of incomplete sentences, misuse of terms, and poor grammar for crying out loud. An actual sentence from the book: "Even though R-134a was made to replace R-12 since the oils do not mix a retrofit has to be done" . What, I mean I get the intent but really, that kind of grammar and punctuation in a published book? Perhaps I'm too critical especially in a technical publication, but come on man! With a copyright year of 2014, one would think at least the temperature/pressure chart would include R410a because of its wide use these days. My recommendation is search the internet for other sources and free practice exams, and spend your money on quality tools to do the work. And H. Benetti, whoever you are, I would be more than happy to proofread the next edition for you, free of charge. On second thought, I would do it for $8.54.

This is the first review I've ever taken time to leave on an Amazon product. I wouldn't normally take time doing this but I felt I would do a diservice if I didn't.I opened the package and quickly realized the book was WAY smaller than I'd anticipated. I shrugged that off and decided to give it a read anyway. I noticed the first spelling error about a couple pages in. Then the grammar and spelling got worse.. I felt like I was reading a book put together by a child in elementary school. The thoughts and format is all over the place. After I decided to push on, I realized that the second half of the pages weren't even fastened in the ridge of the book. The damn pages were falling out as I read on! The temperature-pressure chart in the back was even crooked on the page. I also noticed in the back that it was printed the day I ordered it! Haha! If it was food then it'd be fresh haha but it's a damn book.DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Waste of money..

This study guide is the bomb most of questions on the test are on the actual test just reworded. Can't miss with this book. Passed my universal and this book and the mainstream practice tests was all I used.

I bought this book with high hope, but it lacks clarity, and information necessary to pass the exam.i highly recommend the EPA 608 app from the government agency very highly-for Android users.i passed with 87% for universal certification after practicing hundreds of questions in that app.

Really needs some editing. As a complete neophyte I did manage to figure out that "containments" should have been "contaminants". It's rife with basic grammar and diction mistakes, which make it difficult to read at many points. The test questions at the end included some material that was not presented in the prep guide (e.g. R-113).I like the format with questions at the end of sections in addition to the practice test at the end. I hope the author gets an editor and issues a revision.

I didn't realize what little information would be contained in this book. I was disappointed by the small number of sample questions. I do not recommend this pamphlet.

Somewhat disappointed, editing was very poor. Gramar and spelling mistakes through out. More sample questions would be better.

Easy to read and I passed my test . Thanks

Becker's message for his readers is to set aside their fears, relax, and do it. As unimpressive as that advice may sound, it is laid out in very modest, clear, practical terms and, like all good analyses, it is hard to implement because it goes to the heart of the matter and questions the assumptions that guide people's writing practices, mostly without them realizing it. It helps that Becker has been grappling with similar problems for 30+ years as a writer, teacher, and editor. I will try to give a bullet list of what I took away from the book. That fails to do justice to the book, predominantly for two reasons: Firstly, the proof is in the pudding. If Becker is critical of citation practices, his own relatively short bibliography is rich and thought-provoking. Secondly, he has a knack for situating the problem in its context. Along the way, he appears to sociological gems of analysis like the dichotomy between head and hand, "the corruption of indicators," "pluralistic ignorance," etc. Some of the conclusions are a little too quick, but, overall, this is quality sociology applied to a common problem. Some of the practical advice:- What if I cannot organize the chaos of my thoughts in the form of an attractive product that I can then "export" to my readership? This concern rests on a misleading dualism between thinking and writing, where writing is understood as the product of thinking rather than a process of thinking in its own right. Students tend to believe that, unlike them, adept writers simply sit at their desks and transcribe their perfectly orchestrated thoughts into well-structured compositions in one go. The dualism also blinds us to the complexity of the writing process and the different demands of, say, a first vs. final draft.- Like accents, people's writing style gives away the kind of person they want to be. Classy locutions mostly have a ceremonial, rather than a semantic, purpose and, by dropping them, your writing gains clarity and loses pretense. "To overcome the academic prose, you have to overcome the academic pose." Writing style can also signal allegiance to a theory or school.- Experiment with ritualistic behavior when writing. While it may be interpreted as neurotic and obsessive, crazy habits that you stick to can help relieve stress, especially in a process such as writing where you do not, however much you wish, exert total control over the product.- Write first drafts "quickly and carelessly" precisely because you know you will be returning to revise it multiple times later.- Collect pre-fabricated parts of text for use in the future if it sounds intuitively promising and remotely related to your research interests.- Be frugal with your bibliography and citations. A bibliography was originally supposed to be about specific further information that the reader might find useful if your research interested them. For instance, a book that contains information in a generally similar area is not a good candidate for inclusion in your bibliography.- Choose your metaphors judiciously. Trite and tired metaphors such as "a body of literature" do not mean much unless you are willing to say what the heart, brain, and other organs of that body map to in your metaphor. Otherwise, it is superficial, lacks seriousness, and is best left out. Metaphor, in this sense, is "a serious theoretical exercise," not a literary device to make your prose sound more flowery. This advice, obviously, does not apply to metaphors that are permanently built into our language.- "Evasive beginning"s that are so common in scholarly writings are misleading and risk confusing the reader, if not the author. Rather than being suspenseful and Conan Doyle-ish, tell your reader where you are headed in the beginning. This does not mean that evasive, vacuous, almost meaningless sentences cannot be used in early drafts. On the contrary, committing to words can help you crystalize your thoughts in an iterative process. But such sentences have to be flagged and revised before you get your writing out the door. Some of the insights (greatly expanded on in the book):- Verbosity and "bulls*** qualifications" that shun explicit specification arise because writers want to avoid attributing causality or agency. Unnecessary words occur because writers want to hedge and avoid big claims or sound profound.- Abstract words sometimes mean nothing in themselves, but "mark a place that needs a real idea." General words such as "relationship" or "complex" are good cases in point.- The stories you can/choose to tell are more important than the theories you use to explain them.- Rules are never as clear and unambiguous to have only one interpretation. This means there are no absolute rules for editing and the process is largely done "by ear."- An outline might help in the early stages, but only if there is a dynamic interaction between it and the text. Writing frequently sends the author back to the drawing board.

I bought the first edition of this book about 20 years ago and found it very helpful. I long ago misplaced my copy and so was happy to order the new second edition. On reading the book again, I found Becker's advice to be as good as I remembered, but I was disappointed that he had made so few changes in the "second edition." Essentially, the first edition has been reprinted verbatim--even typos weren't corrected--with a relatively few pages of additional material added to the last two chapters. Chapter 9 now contains Becker's general thoughts on recent software that he considers useful to writers. This discussion would have been more helpful if he had been willing to mention specific programs. I guess he decided not to either to avoid giving free advertising or to avoid dating the discussion. The last chapter gives some interesting, if brief, observations on the place of writing in modern academic life.In short, if you already have the first edition, there's not much point in buying the second edition. If, on the other hand, you haven't encountered this book before and you would like some useful tips on academic writing, it's well worth the price.

Reading this for one of my classes. Wish I had read it in the first semester of my doc program. Would have saved me some stress and many hours of writer's block. Academic writing can be very intimidating. Becker does a great job making us see that we're not alone in our insecurity & quirks about writing. This book and its themes are timeless.

Here Becker offers a series of essays about various aspects of the academic writing process, and the life of the academic while all of this is going on. Part writing and life skills advice, part cautionary tale in how the whole process might get off track, part encouragement for the newer writer, this is an interesting supplement to one's writing project--and perhaps an interesting piece to read while one is going through a phase of classic avoidance behavior (we all do it).

My son-in-law is writing his undergraduate thesis (his school actually requires a thesis to graduate with a B.A.). I was attracted to the title based on his and my daughter's strong interest in sociology (her major) and their relentless research into why people do the things they do. He was thrilled with the book and feels like it will help him.

this textbook was good for my class

This booked changed the way I write. It is full of lessons/stories that compare how I previously thought an "intelligent writer" should write (or sound) vs. producing an easy to read document absent of the "academic fluff"...It is very beneficial as I worked my way through a graduate school grounded in social science.

This book does not read well on Kindle, the key pages of lesson material are too small to read, but if you can read it on iPad, you can zoom in and it's okay. I would prefer the hard copy of the book instead, that way you could photocopy the forms to use in the classroom. Kindle needs to allow you to copy pages to PDF as many workbooks are available on Kindle now.Even though, I was disappointed with my purchase for my Kindle reader, I would probably re-buy this book in hardcopy format. It is well laid out and easy to follow. It has simple steps for getting kids in the classroom to participate in creating fantasy stories by starting with a fantasy world, it will also teach them the key elements and functions of the fantasy genre. I like to get the class to create a shared world, then we all set our stories in that world, this way they can combine into an anthology, which you could get printed up for them. I would also recommend this book for any writer starting out in the fantasy genre.

This is the first, comprehensive book on teaching fantasy writing to upper elementary-aged students that I've been able to find! Adventures in Fantasy takes students through a writing journey that captivates and empowers young authors. Gust provides all of the necessary tools: reproducible pages guiding students through the development of theme, formation of multi-dimensional characters, the creation of a plot line, using figurative language, effective transitions, and editing with revision. The rubrics he includes promote useful dialogue. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach the "how to" of fantasy writing!

Although written for a classroom setting, this book has proven great for instructed home school(middle to high school) or self-education(high school). Also great for co-op classes. Some pages will need to be copied for multiple students. The author allows copies to be made for the classroom, but you should be aware that Adventures in Fantasy is not a workbook, it is a guide. Specifically a teacher's guide, but very readable by older students or proficient readers in early middle school. Although this book is meant to guide a child through a creation of fantasy, the author has done an excellent job at avoiding content that parents may object to. There are fantastical creatures, but there are no overt anti-religious teachings. Everything is handled from a very 'make believe' perspective. I am a devout Christian and found nothing offensive. It is simply a book that encourages students to use their imaginations and write well. The literary content of the book is well laid out and easy to teach/retain. Each element is well explained and helpful guiding information is provided. The author then provides a page for the student to work out the major details of the element. No book is perfect or 100% complete in instruction. At home, I used this book as a primary text with one child and as a supplement with another. Adventures in Fantasy is a great place to start with reluctant writers because most children love fantasy. They get to make the rules for a world that they can make sense of, very different from reality. The book is well written, enjoyable, and easy to implement.

My son and I both went through the exercises in this book, going over all sorts of things, from plot structures to punctuation to parts of speech to transitions. It was a great way to cover a wide range of topics, and my son had a great deal of fun with it.
