The author provides an account of her initiation into the teaching profession by spending a year in a ghetto school that is completely understaffed and out of control. We learn of her struggles to understand the children and to master the art of making the classroom work, her discovery of the actual conditions under which her students live, and her sincere effort to make things better in their lives. As a product of NYC schools in lower-class, but not ghetto, neighborhoods, I was nevertheless shocked to learn of the lawlessness that prevailed and the hopelessness of the situation. Of course, I lived in a very different generation, with different values, and much better control of students. And I knew only my high school, integrated with kids from different neighborhoods, many of them quite poor (as my family was), but segregated by academic achievement into classes that were almost 100% white, and this provided a skewed perspective.

I gave Ms. Asquith's book a rating of five. It is a fair representation of life in neglected underfunded unsupported school divisions. Society's greatest gifts are its children and when we fail them we fail as a generation. As a retired educator I have seen a whole generation of parents ,politicians, and tax payers completely abdicate their responsibilities. Not one group can fix the diverse problems and complexities of educating today's youth. We all have to work together to fix our issues. One way is to respect and support(economically, emotionally, and professionally) people who are willing to go into this very demanding profession. Teachers who retain their passion and dedication are trained well, supported well, and paid well . When this happens everyone wins. Bandaid solutions, outrageous paperwork, not enough dollars spent in the right areas , and politicians who have never spent any time in a classroom dictating policy don't work as illustrated in this book.

In this book, a young journalists decides she wants to "make a difference in a child's life" - according to the teacher recruiting advertisements. She quits her job as a journalist and chooses to teach 6th grade in the lowest-performing school in Philadelphia - without any experience or training - or curriculum. She chronicles her year - the wins and the losses. As a middle school ESOL teacher, I found myself relating to her frustrations as well as the moments when the stars line up and you feel you've really touched a student. This book helps illustrate what is broken in many school systems, and how difficult the problems are to solve.

I was a new educator in the inner city recently. My school wasn’t as rough as the school depicted in this story, but some parts of this book rang very true to me. I felt I could relate to the book, and I wish I had read it in college. This book can be heart breaking for anyone passionate about education (teachers, parents, and community members). However, it also helps you understand the system some kids are functioning within, and it helps you have empathy towards those kids. Great read!

I was a teacher in an area similar to the one in this book. Nobody could have tried harder than Christina to make a difference for these kids but there were so many obstacles in her path. I would hope that exposing some of the problems in public education would get the message to the people who could help solve them. Getting and keeping qualified teachers is a must! They need the support of the administrators and the school district, with materials and services for their students. There needs to be help for the misbehaving students who can singlehandedly disrupt a whole class.

Emergency teachers being brought in because those with an educational degree are fleeing the system. Ms Asquith did the best she could under extremely hard circumstances. She showed love to her students, which is very important, but without supplies and training, she and other emergency teachers and underfunded teachers and schools are set up for failure. Eye opening book!

It is fair to note that had Christina Asquith taught in a more affluent part of Philadelphia or a middle class suburban community, she probably couldn't write a book about her one-year experience as a teacher. Before being trained as such (even trained teachers have to struggle in the beginning by learning on the job) she should not have accepted a teaching job from a district which would simply throw her to the wolves, as such. As she pointed out, a few teachers in this abysmal school were dynamic and great managers of their classes. And it seems true (was for me, at least) that it takes about three years to build ones teaching techniques--and maybe five years to really feel confident. But Asquith had an unfortunate placement in a tragically-run school.Nevertheless, Asquith's portrayal of the (reputed) worst school in Philadelphia (and too many others come close) is heart-rending and shocking, and the revelation an embarrassment to the district--let's hope. The author had it many times harder than I. How she held on for a full school year is a testament to her character in the face of the school district's incompetence. The book is more revelatory than inspirational, and though a fast and sometimes engrossing read it is rather depressing. I think a prospective teacher--who isn't desperate--would tend to not teach in a big-city public school after reading this account.I retired a few months before Asquith started her experiment in teaching, and my school (after at least 30 years of relative calm) was just starting to become infected by students creating bedlam in their classrooms and hallways. I had good control, was creative and motivational, but even my tolerence with the system forced me and other veterans in the school to take the early retirement incentive being offered by the state (so the district could hire two new teachers for the price of one veteran with higher degrees). We could see what was coming. Now, the reader will understand why 50 percent of new hires leave teaching within 3-5 years--the shorter time representing big-city public schools. Teaching can be very rewarding, but also one of the toughest jobs there is, and the emotional stress is equal to that of a police person "on the beat"--I've read. The following partial paragraph from page 98, gives a sense of the entire book:"I'd set out wholly single-mindedly to learn to teach, and suddenly my failure became a real possibility. I'd personally staked everything on suceeding, I'd given up my career, my Inguirer [Newspaper] friends... If I was failing and wasn't making a shred of difference, what was the point? How could I answer the question: How was your day?"The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

I am always looks for affordable books that are in good condition for class and this purchase was no different. I will forever shop Amazon when I am in need of other purchases. This is a great book at a great price.

I do like this book because it has a lot of great information and great lesson plan ideas. It was required for one of my classes. I don't like to read so I found it a little dry.

My book came broken. Chapter 1 literally fell out the book the second day I had it

I used this book occasionally. Not my favorite, but it came to good use when planning our Social Studies themes.

Water damaged and held together with tape. Was supposed to be in acceptable condition but this is nowhere close to that. Not happy

It is a little of a difficult read.

Product was as described. Fast shipping! Great Service! Thank you,Jen

A rich sense of place and relentless feeling of dread permeate Attica Locke's heartbreakingly resonant new novel about race and justice in America. . . . Harlan Coben recommended this book on the Today Show as a Christmas gift. I bought it for myself. The story of a black Texas Ranger sent to look into the murders of a black man and a white woman in two consecutive days was not exactly cheery but it was a very good book! Darren is in the process of trying to sort out some of his own personal and professional problems as he looks into the murders in Lark , Texas. He meets the widow of the black man and promises that he will find his killer. He suspects the husband of the white woman for a while but believes his story that while he laid some hurt on the man-he was still alive when he walked away from him. Page -turner!

Several interlacing plots involving crime, love and hate, and racial prejudice in Texas. Hero is a black Texas ranger who has drinking problems, and wants to keep the world safe for poor black people in forgotten rural areas, from which he also came. Villains include Aryan Brotherhood gangsters. Nice beginning, good plot with twisrs and turns, and life in a town of 200 people, including a gutsy 70 yr old black owner of a roadside cafe. Many secondary characters play good roles.

It took me a while to get into this story about a black Texas Ranger who’s suspended for going to the aid of an acquaintance who was being harassed by a white supremacist who was on his land. That supremacist is found dead two days later. Darren is already struggling with his marriage and drinking too much in his loneliness and frustration.Despite being suspended, when he hears about a black man found dead under suspicious circumstances in a town of 200 people that’s well known for having a high tolerance for members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, he can’t help but nose around, especially when a white girl is found dead in the same bayou just two days later. ABT is even worse than the KKK because it deals drugs like meth among its many criminal ties. This is when the story really picks up. I was taking notes and I still had a hard time figuring out who was related to whom and how, but I got the gist of it. Once I got into it, I devoured the book in a day.I enjoyed this mystery, which doesn’t shy away from the complexities of race and family.

Two bodies have turned up in quick succession in a small town in hardscrabble East Texas. The sheriff is inclined to treat them as unconnected. But not so Darren Matthews, a Texas Ranger who has come to town at the urging of a friend in the FBI who suspects larger forces at work there. An African-American, Darren fears a connection with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas (ABT), a violent racist gang enriched by drug smuggling. However, Darren is on suspension from the Texas Rangers because he is suspected of involvement in the death of a known member of the ABT. Nonetheless, without authorization, he sets out to investigate the two deaths. Once in town, he encounters resistance from the sheriff and worrisome rumblings from the local people. No one, not the African-Americans who congregate at Geneva's cafe nor the white men who hang out in a nearby bar, is willing to help Darren at first. He's an outsider. He doesn't belong. This is the setup in Bluebird, Bluebird, the new novel from the widely acclaimed writer Attica Locke. Her title comes from a blues song of the same name sung by John Lee Hooker. ("Bluebird, bluebird, take this letter down South for me.") Music, especially the blues, plays a large role in the background of this gripping murder mystery.Bluebird, Bluebird highlights the uneasy relationships between black and white in a Texas town still in the vise of history. "Forty-some years after the death of Jim Crow, not much had changed," writes Locke. Given the setup, it would be natural to expect the two deaths (which are in fact murders) to be racially motivated. Race is a central factor—but in ways that are too complicated to imagine as the story begins to unfold.Attica Locke was born in Houston. She makes her home in the Los Angeles area, where she has accumulated numerous credits as a screenwriter. Bluebird, Bluebird is her third novel.

This is a well written novel and the only reason I give it 4 stars is that the hero - a black Texas Ranger - is an alcoholic who is stupid enough to buy liquor while in uniform and drinks on the job. This is a disconnect from the rest of the novel. Locke should know that the early first blacks in once segregated circumstances were careful lest their white bosses would find any excuse to fire them. Otherwise, the plot and characters feel real. It was often the case that the first blacks were overqualified for the job, having more education than their colleagues and their bosses. That is the case here. Locke skillfully relates the small towns of the south where residents are enmeshed with each other across race and where everything is civil as long as everyone knows their place. It is curious that the redneck bad guys belong to the Aryan brotherhood rather than the Klan. It is also farfetched that a black man would go into the local redneck bar for a drink. But thats only a small quibble. I look forward to the sequel.

This book just rings true. It is beautifully written and accurately illustrates a part of life that desperately needs examining. I would highly recommend if you are interested in history, psychology, or just plain humanity. It is also just rousingly satisfying! P.S. I'm a southeast Texas native.

I probably shouldn't review this book. Five years ago I lost a child. Two years ago I lost my husband, in March I lost my daughter in law. So for me this was not time to read a book about a tragic death. It does remind you, as I remind myself daily, that you must tell family you love them, do something nice for someone you hardly know, say all you need to say before you lose the, because those moments wont come back for even one minute. There are no "second chances" even if you think you can wait another day. I finished the book last night crying - because I know, there are things that you should say today, now, and not leave it untold. The family dynamics were amazing as it is for so many families. All that matters is love. Not what other people think that don't live in your world. Go do, do it now.

When I read EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU by Celeste Ng, I wasn't sure if mentally I was ready for another book starting with a death. But as good writing can do, this story picked me up by the end of the first chapter and carried me away to a time in American life that I never gave much thought to. Set in the 70s, the story follows a Chinese American blended family in Ohio. When Lydia is found floating in the lake, her family is forced to analyze what put her there. Was it pressure from her family to succeed? Was it pressure to fit in? Was it a crime of passion or convenience? I was spellbound reading the last half of this book. I loved each flawed family member, especially Hannah,. While the story went where I hoped it would go, I was not disappointed at all with the progression. It was also quite insightful on the prejudices that society had about Chinese Americans still during that timeframe and how careful parents have to be to put their dreams onto their children.I am grateful my book club chose this book for February so that I finally prioritized reading it. I think it will lend itself to a great discussion and the author's notes at the end provide a lot of insight into how it was written and her inspiration. I highly recommend this one.

The constant strife and lack of character development made this a long miserable read. The fact she threw in the gay surprise at the end only confirmed my suspicion that she wanted to write a "hot" point book. I only finished it because it was a book club selection.

This book kept my interest throughout. While it is often described as a story of interracial marriage and resulting interpersonal problems, I believe it is actually a story of the kind of conflicts that can occur when parental expectations for their children go beyond wishing them to develop their own talents to their very best to either expecting them to achieve specific successes in areas that the parents were unable to meet for various reasons or to meet goals that are beyond the children's ability. The problems arise when their children, out of a desire to please their parents, are unable to communicate frustrations out of fear of disappointing them. The story is about how the children adapt, or can't adapt, to these pressures and about suppressed frustrations of both children and their parents.

This author writes with a heavy hand. She wants to make sure you get it so she tells you over and over and over again that this is a dysfunctional family. That the parents are living out their frustrations through their children. That their children are submissive and unhappy. That their family experience racial discrimination. To make sure you get it she draws stereotypical portraits of her characters. After a while the reader feels he is being clobbered with a literary hammer. If the author only had more confidence in her reader this would be a much better book. But as it is, one could spend one's time more profitability reading something else.

To me, this is an exceptionally good book. The subject is a dark one—the death, at the beginning of the book, of a daughter, Lydia (the sister to two siblings) who has just turned 16. I don’t usually read dark books or watch dark movies. But the book is a page-turner, and it contains very thoughtful events, circumstances and observations about a dysfunctional but believable family whose problems can apply universally. The book is about relationships and the effects on a father and his children of being visually different (here, Asian-American in a virtually all-white community). While they want to blend in and be accepted in society, his wife, an American, struggles to stand out as being different, and to impose that goal on her daughter.Despite the primary focus on relationships and the effects of looking different than others (consequently, with a different life experience), the book flows as well as any mystery. There are plenty of flashbacks and fast-forwards, as well as action and thoughts in the present. Was the daughter murdered? Did she die in an accident or by suicide? How can they find the answers? What are the effects on the surviving members of the family? Why did all this happen? The only part of the book that I did not find realistic was in the first chapter or two, when Lydia has disappeared and does not return. The description of the situation appeared to cover the logical bases—although with a delay in calling the police. But these beginning pages do not describe the terror, panic, helplessness, and frantic nature of the disappearance of a child. I write as someone who has had this same situation happen in my family to a daughter of the same age as Lydia (but with a happier ending).Celeste Ng is an excellent writer, and I suspect that the decision to play down the emotions of this event at the beginning of the book results from her primary interests in describing the causes and effects of an event like this. She gives lots of attention to the event itself as the book goes on, and the ending can leave the reader with some questions that will never be answered, but with a good understanding of how family relationships and events can cause the event that happened in this book. It is a good lesson for all parents of children up through their teenage years.Potentially, this book can save lives. Therefore, in addition to being a good story and a good read, it is an important book. It should appeal especially to anyone who is or feels different than virtually all other people in a community, but its application and appeal and interest is far broader. My family is all “white American”, yet I was engrossed by this book and wish that the book had been written and I had read it 30 years ago. It could have made a difference.

I found this to be a well written book and one of the few that humanized Mary. She was a proud, stubborn woman who didn't understand the implications of her condition and was ostracized because of it.

This was a quick, easy, and straight forward read about Mary. It humanized her and told her story as it should be told. Highly recommend if you are looking for something to read.

This book is simply written and would make a good story for sixth or seventh grade child who had to write a report. it introduces health concepts in a simple and straightforward manner. I would recommend for preteen reading.

Terrible Typhoid Mary is a great book that gives a concise overview of what is known about Mary Mallon's life. The book provides enough background information about medicine and society in Mary's time to really set the stage for the story. I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others.

Quick easy read about Typhoid Mary. Very interesting!!

Purchased for grandson's required summer reading. He read and said it is a good and interesting book.

Great flow and very interesting. Informative. I learned things about her I hadn't know before and I've read other biographies on Typhoid Mary.

I have always been fascinated with this story. This book was very simple worded for a younger reader but it was still a great book!

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant. OK, full disclosure: I've read the Time Traveller's Wife 4 times. I've also got a weakness for Victorian novelists and Shakespearian tragedies, not to mention Ray Bradbury's brand of scifi, if you can even call it scifi. TTW has elements of all of these, and for me at least, it works so well that, despite Niffenegger's mediocre prose, the plot s so cleverly constructed, the story so romantic, sad and beautiful, the characters so memorable, that every couple of years I get an uncontrollable urge to read it again. Of course there are plot elements and time travel paradoxes that stretch the borders of credibility, but no more than half a dozen bizarre elements in 100 Years of Solitude. And this book makes you feel good, restores your faith in romantic love somehow, without becoming overwhelmingly sentimental or syrapy. It's a guilty pleasure, reading this book again and again in a post-modern era where to enjoy such fiction is just totally uncool. So go ahead, read it in secret, especially if you're a guy like me, who reads Jane Austin and the Brönte sisters on the sly.

It is interesting how the books that defy confinement to a single genre provide the most intriging premises. The Time Traveler’s Wife is neither romance, nor science fiction, nor pure fantasy. Henry, the time traveler, is the protagonist, with time itself as the antagonist. It is a man versus nature story told with new ideas. Points for originality. My quibbles with the story are with Clare, the wife. Much of the story is centered on her, especially when her husband is traveling, yet her character seems underdeveloped. I kept waiting for something, some event, to endear her to me, but it was never to be. It was a missed opportunity that knocked a star from the review.I’m still glad I read it. It is long, but even if you don’t finish it, the interesting ideas Niffenegger presents are worth a look.

I am a sucker for stories about time travel. This is a classic in that genre. Henry, the hero, is afflicted with something called "Chrono Displacement Disorder," which is mumbo-jumbo for the fact that he has no control over randomly jumping back and forth in his own timeline. Claire, the heroine, is a normal, unaffected person.I recommend this book to anyone who has the following characteristics: (1) Slightly nerdy, and enjoys stories having to do with time travel, and (2) Enjoys books with a strong female character and (3) Enjoys fantasies with a hunky male character.

A long time ago a friend loved this book so much she bought it for me too. I have since read it over and over. It is gorgeous and perfect and sad and joyous every time. I will never see the movie because the book is better on the moviescreen of my mind than anybody could ever film.Read The Time Traveller's Wife, then read it again. And again.

This is a story about two people (Henry and Claire) and the challenges of their relationship. In the case of Henry and Claire, their biggest challenge is Henry's spontaneous time traveling and the problems it creates - uncertainty, absence, two lives that are lived in two different orders, questions surrounding free will, anxiety about Henry's safety, issues with conceiving a child.I had mixed feelings about this book. Once I got into the rhythm of jumping about in time, I was very intrigued by the story. I thought it was an exciting premise and expected more twists and turns because Henry's time traveling is dangerous. However, the story doesn't really take that direction. It remains a story about relationship ups and downs, and love and loss.I thought this book had many moments that were very thought-provoking or very moving. Some of those scenes or themes really stayed with me. At the same time, the story also got bogged down by a lot of details about punk bands they like, food they cook, etc. Dreams are often described in extreme detail (not my favorite thing). By around the mid-way point, I was getting bored and I would set the book aside for days at a time. I think you could easily trim 100+ pages from this book and not lose anything significant.By the end, I was eagerly turning through the last 100 pages quickly to reach the resolution, and that last section had some very touching moments. However, there is also a lot of build-up to the final scene that occurs on the last 2 pages and I was a little let down by it. The final scene was barely more than a page and I thought more detail would have been nice since both the reader and one of the main characters are waiting for this moment to arrive. I felt a little sold short by it.Also - a side note: Though it's called "The Time Traveler's Wife," I really didn't feel like I knew Claire as well as I knew Henry. It seemed like more of the alternating 1st person perspectives were from Henry's point of view, and I cared for him more as a character. I felt some distance from Claire's character.Overall: Interesting premise. Pretty writing (though sometimes it meanders and the pace is often slow). Thought-provoking. Dreamy, sad love story. Just don't go into it expecting an exciting time travel adventure.

I just reread this for about the 5th time. It's such an amazing story. Niffenegger is a tough, but great, writer. As a person who doesn't like violence, this book hits my limit, but the amazing romance and the masterful writing make it well worth reading. The characters are fully fleshed and draw the reader in to the fascinating story.
