Amazon.com Review

As a child in 1950s Czechoslovakia, Caldecott Honor-winning artist Peter Sís would listen to mysterious tales of Tibet, "the roof of the world." The narrator, oddly enough, was his father--a documentary filmmaker who had been separated from his crew, caught in a blizzard, and (according to him, anyway) nursed back to health by gentle Yetis. Young Sís learned of a beautiful land of miracles and monks beset by a hostile China; of the 14th Dalai Lama, a "Boy-God-King"; and of "a magic palace with a thousand rooms--a room for every emotion and heart's desire." Hearing these accounts--some extravagant but all moving--helped the boy recover from an accident. The stories also allowed Sís's father to relate an odyssey other adults didn't seem to want to know about in cold war Czechoslovakia. "He told me, over and over again, his magical stories of Tibet, for that is where he had been. And I believed everything he said," Sís recalls. Still, after some time he too seemed to become immune, and the stories "faded to a hazy dream." With Tibet: Through the Red Box Sís finally pays tribute to this fantastical experience, illustrating key pages from his father's diary with complex, color-rich images of mazes, mountains, and mandalas. He also produces pictures of his family at home--simple, monochromatic images that are just as haunting as their Himalayan counterparts. In one, a wistful mother and two children gather around a Christmas tree, the absent father appearing as a featureless silhouette. Tibet is a treasure for the eyes and heart. Some will ask: Is it for children or adults? Others will wonder: Is it a work of art or a storybook? One of the many things that this book makes us realize is that such classifications are entirely (and happily) unnecessary. (Click to see a sample spread. Illustrations copyright ©1998 by Peter Sís. From Publishers Weekly

In this visually enticing, magically appealing, oversized volume, Czechoslovakian-born illustrator Sis applies his considerable gifts to painting a spellbinding portrait of his father's experiences in Tibet, where he was sent in the 1950s to instruct the Chinese in documentary filmmaking. Vladimir Sis was actually drafted by the Chinese government to record the construction of a highway from China into Tibet; he was to be gone more than two years, unable to communicate with his family. During that time, China invaded the neighboring country, and Sis senior witnessed events he dared not describe even after he returned home, except through "magical stories" he related to his son. The diary he kept during his sojourn in Tibet was locked in a red box, which his son only saw for the first time in 1994, when he received a cryptic message from his father: "The diary is now yours." Here Sis re-creates a facsimile of the diary with excerpts handwritten upon parchment-like backgrounds on double-page spreads brimming with pencil sketches of the events described (e.g., "The road looks like a cut into a beautiful cake"). He then magnifies the more uncanny aspects of the journal via the tales told to him by his father, recollected from childhood, which are printed on the succeeding spread. One entry describes a boy wearing bells who tracks down the filmmaker in the middle of nowhere to deliver a letter from his family; Sis then follows with "The Jingle-Bell Boy," festooning the account with a trail of rhododendron-leaf markings that lead his father ultimately to the Dalai Lama. The guileless prose of both father and son makes Sis's juxtaposition of the journal records with his own childhood memories all the more poignant. The luminous colors of the artwork, the panoramas of Tibetan topography and the meticulous intermingling of captivating details and the mystical aspects of Tibetan culture make this an extraordinary volume that will appeal to readers of all ages. I have not yet shared this book with my granddaughters. I purchased it to go along with Barbie doll from Tibet. It was not easy to find something on Tibet for children. However, this is not really a children's book.Sis open's a box which contains his father's diary. His father had left his family for an assignment in China where he was to teach a group of Chinese men how to do filming, as this was his father's expertise. They are to film the building of a road that stretches into the Tibetan Himalayas. But things go wrong and the father and his aide fall into a series of events that are told in the diary. Some of the entries are vague and surreal. We are left wondering if the father was hallucinating from illness, or has been given medicines that might cause them, or is attributing his experiences to real magical events that rightfully belong in the high Himalayas, either from the thin air effecting the brain, or from association with the monks.Because adults can look back in retrospect from the murderous invasion of the Chinese into Tibet, the adult reader feels a tension from the diary entries that reveal the Chinese building the road to Tibet that will allow that invasion to take place. All the while the peaceful gentle people of Tibet have no inclination that this is going on.There is a story within a story here as well. Sis has a serious illness as a child and his memories of his father are effected by that illness, as well as the way in which he handles the fact that his father does not return. No on knows what has happened to the father. The family endures hardships and anxiety on this account. The artistry by Sis is appropriate to the text, but is not particularly appealing to children. Neither is the story-line. I would not recommend it for children. but it does not have the elements that you would want in a book for adults either. It doesn't really have a plot, nor well drawn characters. It might be called a poetic prose piece. It is informative, realistic, and revealing at the same time that is is magical, sensitive and heart wrenching. In short, it stands alone as a literary type. I did enjoy it.

Tibet: Through the Red Box is an entrancing and beautiful book. However, it is one of the new subgenre of "children's books for adults" - it may look like a picture book, but it is *not* suitable for young children.Tibet is very like Maus: A Survivor's Tale, the award-winning graphic novel that bears only superficial resemblance to a standard graphic novel. In Tibet, as in Maus, a son tells his father's story - and what a story it is. Peter Sis' father was a documentary filmmaker who was hired by the Chinese to make a documentary about the building of a bridge in a remote province - and instead ended up losing his crew and witnessing the taking of Tibet.Sis does a remarkable job of transmitting to the reader his father's love of Tibet and its mysteries and magic. Using tales his father told him, he creates an image of a dream land, a fantasy land, where weird and wonderful things happen. It's impossible not to love Sis' vision of Tibet - and therefore, impossible not to be sad that the Chinese take it.I've said that the book is not for children, and I stand by that. However, I do believe that a child who is 6 or older could enjoy this book, provided it was read to him by an adult, and provided that that adult could cushion and explain some of the harder truths, not to mention some of the blending of fantasy and fact.Peter Sis' father's story is incredible, and the book is marvelous. Any adult who loves books or history would love Tibet: Through the Red Box.

I loved this story and the magic of it all....it makes one wonder about the magic and possibilities in our own lives that may seem quite humdrum at times...but are all of the coincidences that we encounter really coincidences or is there more meaning than we are open for or looking for in our life experiences....the people that we meet..etc.

This is such a cool dreamlike book. I don't know if it's real or surreal, but the stories and pictures are captivating. I have it sitting atop my kids' bookshelf with one other book I don't want them to mess up (Billy's Balloon Ride), and now that my kids are three, I think I need to start reading it to them.

Having been to Tibet in 2012, this book brought tears to my eyes for its beauty and poignancy. This is the real story - a real, personal story. If you have any interest in Tibet, you will want to read this. And Peter Sis's drawings are exquisite.

This book is a tresure. Wonderful illustrations, great story. It shows kids Tibet as it was more than 50 years ago.

A superb story with the most engaging illustrative style. Was the greatest part of the adventure the inward journey? As an adventure into unknown worlds in the physical realm, the author also shifts our awareness to the contemplative spaces within simultaneously.

I came upon this book accidentally while working in a public library. It is undoubtedly the best children's book for adults that I have ever read! It is my most favored possession and I read it 3 or 4 times a year and never cease to be inspired by it anew. Visually stunning with a magical story line that will leave you believing in miracles. Buy It!!!

I bought this book in preparation for our trip to New Zealand. It was very useful for familiarizing ourselves with the south island and planning a general itinerary of where to go. Once we got to the country, it pretty much just traveled around with us and didn't provide any real source of information. Like another reviewer, we wanted to get to know the country and the people, not go on a series of paid excursions. We didn't stay at a single accommodation listed, nor eat at any restaurants, nor pay for any of the incredibly expensive options listed for entertainment. If you are planning to go to New Zealand, pick your cities and then start looking at hotels listed on Trip Advisor. At each place we stayed we knew exactly what to expect and were more than happy with our choices since we knew what we were getting ourselves into. One thing you should know is that a "studio" appears to be a standard hotel room here in the States: a room with a bed or two, a separate small bath and a microwave and small fridge. A "one bedroom" appears to be a larger room with a kitchenette and a separate bedroom; both rooms have a bed of some kind. They charge on a per-person basis, so you'll need to confirm with them the number of people and number of beds you actually want. We did everything online and also confirmed whether or not we had cooking facilities/utensils. We used the cooking facilities because eating out is incredibly expensive! However, we discovered New World Markets, where they have delicious breakfast pastries and meat pies for lunch or dinner. Yum! We also ate a lot of pb&j sandwiches. If you are staying in Queenstown, there is a small bed and breakfast located out of town that we will stay at if we ever go again: Little Paradise Lodge (actually listed in this book). We did their tea and garden tour and were amazed.Every city has an "I-Site," as in an information center. They have local people staffing the site and provide free maps and lots of information about the area. We went there first to get the lay of the land. They can book accommodations and excursions if you want that, with no cost to you for their help. You can even do that from over here before you go.Our greatest source of fun was asking the local people what they liked to do and where they went when they had a free afternoon. We went with no itinerary, but every day was packed with all kinds of activity. Their parks, gardens, beaches, and a lot of museums are totally free. There is no charge to park at trail heads. We did pay for a few things (water taxi to Ulva Island at Stewart Island, parking fees in cities, Milford Sound cruise, bike rental, the garden tour, and donations), but most of our time was spent driving, walking around towns seeing their sights, birding and hiking--all free.My recommendation would be to use this book to make your general plan, but don't bother packing it with you.

NOTE: this review is for the Kindle version of the product.DO NOT ORDER IT. It is absolutely useless, whether on a Kindle, a Fire, or a Windows tablet. There is no index, no search, it is extremely slow to refresh pages... unless you literally plan on reading through one page after the next from the beginning, it will do you no good.I ordered the paperback version afterwards, and that's fine, but it's criminal that they would sell this as a Kindle book without even a basic index. Trying to get my money back.

I love Lonely Planet and this edition didn't disappoint. Offered great information by which to plan my trip. Great size and I like how they broke it up by island, since many people (myself included) travel to one island or the other. Unfortunately, I left the book on the flight from Auckland to Christchurch (Doh!!). I managed to borrow the Lonely Planet for all of NZ from friends at my first stop. I noticed it was a lot of the same information, but now I was lugging around a massive book with all of this North Island info I didn't need. Wish I'd had my South Island with me. :(

Not perfect, what guide ever is? But we've found it quite useful and agreed with the recommendations. Use it with a local cell phone and a GPS with NZ maps and you're qualified to really enjoy the South Island. One correction to note: The Bodhi Tree in Christchurch is a great restaurant, but it's at no. 399, not no. 99 as the guide states. And it's hard to spot driving by. Took 2 phone calls to finally home in on it.

This book was a good beginning for planning my trip. It introduced me to places that I definitely wanted to go while helping me avoid touristy expensive areas. A lot of the author's suggestions for trips were not what I was looking for. They were either extreme sports, wine tours, city destinations, or just too expensive. I wanted more of the beauty, charm, hiking, and getting to know the people kind of trip.

one cannot go wrong with ANY lonely planet guide book. this was particularly helpful in navigating the south island by bus. we had a great time. even the accommodations while NOT exactly fabulous were mostly delightful if not a bit quirky.

Looking for things to do week by week and this is an excellent planning tool if you're planning an extended South Island tour.

Succinct but with lots of good details, too. It's been great for planning a complicated trip. I will use this publisher again.

The stories in this book are fantastic. I am no short story expert so I don't know whether the editor pulls from a wide variety of sources but it seemed to me he did. Often the stories were engaging and thought provoking, immersing the reader in the world they were creating. Stories like "Intimacy" by Hanif Kureishi, "The Immortals" by Martin Amis, "Wilderness Tips" by Margaret Atwood, "Pornography" by Ian McEwan, and "The Story of the Lizard Who Had the Habit of Dining on His Wives" by Eduardo Galeano are a few examples of how there is much more to many of these stories than first meets the eye. This book is definitely worth the read and I'd recommend it to anyone, whether you have a strong background in short stories or are new to the genre. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have seen more stories from non-Western writers, though there were a few in there.

I belong to a short story book club that is currently using this book.I love how the stories are from various places throughout the world. And while I recognize many of the authors, it's great to be introduced to new ones.I highly recommend this book for short story lovers who want to broaden their horizons.

An excellent selection of short stories from around the world. The only problem for me was his not including the year the story was written or published . For me that would add to my understanding of the story's social or political context.

Fantastic. Arrived in perfect condition. The book itself is great too!

I purchased a new one while the book spine was severely ripped.

Just what the teacher ordered...

Some outstanding stories by Nathan Englander and Toni Cade Bambara and many recognized authors - definitely worth the money!

My Book Club uses this book. Short stories from various authors and countries.

The problem is that there are only 2 books to choose from at this time (2011)to help you study for the PMHNP certification. The downside of this book is it is very flimsy. The paper is lightweight, kind of grey looking... I would expect for this price it would be of better quality (hence a lower rating). But don't let the appearance fool you. This book is likely all you need to review. All the information you need to pass the ANCC exam is in this book. I just passed the ANCC PMHNP exam. With hindsight, I can tell you that the content of the book, and the weighting of each section, is equivalent to the information in the exam.

This book has great generalized information about Psychiatry.... but I did not feel it was the best help in preparing for the ANCC exam (PMHNP). It was written for nurses, generalists, and nurse practitioners. This proved to be overwhelming and with information I did not need for the ANCC exam. For example, there is an abundance of information about milieu's and managing them, not really a PMHNP role and not on the ANCC exam. I stopped reading this book after the 5th chapter, it wasn't worth continuing. My second complaint is that there is no rationale for the questions/answers. The questions didn't help if I didn't know why I was wrong or what they were looking for. I also found the questions to be based on general knowledge, not like ANCC questions. When studying for the ANCC, knowing question format/rational/application is just as important as knowing the material. For example, the ANCC likes questions with "inital action" and this books questions were not like that.In summary, a good book for psychaitric information, but not as a study guide for ANCC exam (as advertised on the front of this book)Note- I passed my exam, first attempt, but this book was of minimal help. The ANCC practice questions were expensive, but worth it.

The primary issue for this book is that it fails to provide rationales for its questions which really is crucial when passing the test is secondary to actually becoming a better educated nurse. It's a review guide so the chapters don't contain robust content and are essentially outlines. Since this is the case, you often have to consult a second source and if you're doing that, you wouldn't be too much worse off to forgo this as an aid altogether. Another issue is that the editing appears shoddy, sometimes material will be referenced in the questions which is not covered in the chapters. The ANCC book is roughly the same price and since the ANCC is the one creating the test, it's probably the only guide you'll really need. The only benefit to this book over the one the ANCC sells is that it has a good deal more test questions. Still, I think I could have skipped this one and passed the test just the same.

This is probably one of the better resources that is out there because it will review what is on the exam. The downfall to this resource is you read the text and take the test so although you find where you are most weakest you will have to find your own way to summarize the text e.g you will make your own flashcards.

delivered rapidly. helpful for test

Great study guide

Much information packed into this guide. Haven't taken the exam yet.

I used this book to study for ANCC's Family Psychiatric/Mental Health NP exam and it was so worth it! The book went over all the content material I encountered on the test and provided a good review. I tend to study only those things that I enjoy studying--so I often skip over nursing theory and legislation issues. The chapter on Child & Adolescent mental health was also great for me because I didn't get a ton of experience in my program with children, and this helped me know what to focus on. This book helped me feel so much more prepared. I passed! Yay!

Tarrell Alvin McCraney is a hot young playwright whose works have been performed nationwide and abroad. He has a most unusual way with dialogue and dramatic action. I've read two of three of the trilogy, seen one performed at UC San Diego, and will soon see The Brothers Size in production at the Old Globe Theatre. McCraney, who came through Yale University Drama Department, where he was influenced by the late August Wilson, is someone to watch.

Terrific playwright - saw two of these plays in local theaters.

Amazing writing!

Well I got a chance to work on a production of these too, which was a wonderful experience, but the plays are exciting, heart-wrenching, complete, and just, truly beautifully written.

I saw the 'Brother Sister plays' more times than I should admit....He's truly deserving of the MacArthur Genius award and I'm proud to own a copy of his play(s).

I enjoy the diasporic underpinning, the dialog, the imagery and the symbolism of these great works even MORE because they are written with a black, gay identity. The perspective is clear, unique and vital to the voice of the African and African-american experience.

A beautiful set of plays.

Excellent plays!

Universities and the Capitalist State: Corporate Liberalism and the Reconstruction of American Higher Education, 1894-1928 (History of American Thought and Culture)

Review

“Clyde Barrow’s thoughtful and informed study outlines the shaping of the American university system against the background of rising corporate power, the demands of the state ideological apparatus, and the ebb and flow of popular forces. It provides much insight into the tensions inherent in a system of private power and democratic ideals, and their consequences for the academic institutions and intellectual life generally.”—Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Barrow shows, to speak plainly, the complete takeover of the university system from about 1860 onward, by Corporate America. Formerly controlled by religious leaders and teachers. Very precise data is provided to show, step by step, this takeover. Universities became the servants of Corporations and to the detriment of labor. There is a method to their madness, you might say. Anyone who has read John Taylor Gatto's Underground History of American Education, should read this, too, and vice-versa.As well, Universities were corporatized so that salaries were dramatically reduced over time, with most profit going to the University "Corporation." Universities then became research centers to aid big business in research and development. This book reveals much not well known or publicized. As another reviewer did mention, it does appear to have a slight Marxist slant, but that does not change the value of what Barrow presents. One criticism from me would be that the language seems a bit cryptic at times, and not easily understood. But much of the data is plain enough and it gets easier to understand as the book goes on.Perhaps it is possible Barrow was even a bit nervous in presenting the information so he may have chosen a cryptic style to add a layer of security. But the book is a must have, must read! 5 Stars, despite the difficulty. It is worth the effort.I bought this at Amazon about 8 years ago, used. Glad I did!
